They said the truck’s weight, energy use and angular design made it a symbol of climate and safety concerns—and of wealth insulated from climate consequences. Those are the activists’ arguments, not independently established technical findings in the incident reports.
What happened in Hamburg?
Two Letzte Generation supporters poured orange paint over the displayed Cybertruck and held a banner reading “Gepanzert in die Katastrophe,” or “Armored into catastrophe,” according to contemporaneous local coverage dated July 13, 2024.
That report said Hamburg police responded, a complaint was filed, and an investigation was ongoing at the time of publication. The reports available here do not establish the investigation’s eventual outcome.
Why did the activists say they targeted the Cybertruck?
Weight and energy use
Protest participant Hendrik Fauer, identified in the local report as an electrical engineer, said the Cybertruck weighed nearly three tonnes and argued that its weight meant high energy use. The group also described the vehicle as weighing nearly three tonnes. In the reports reviewed here, that figure is an activist-attributed claim, not an independently checked vehicle specification.
Fauer summarized his objection as: “Sinnlose Verschwendung, die wir uns als Gesellschaft nicht leisten können” (“Senseless waste that we cannot afford as a society”).

Angular design and perceived safety
Fauer also criticized the truck’s sharp-edged construction as a safety concern. This records the participant’s stated rationale; the incident coverage does not provide an independent safety assessment or regulatory finding to verify it.
Wealth and climate inequality
The group presented the Cybertruck as a symbol of wealthy people shielding themselves from climate consequences. Letzte Generation spokesperson Lina Johnsen also criticized what she called “Technologieoffenheit” in the context of wealthy interests and fossil-fuel policy, as reported by the contemporaneous account. These comments describe the group’s political framing, not a demonstrated motive shared by all Cybertruck owners or all electric-vehicle users.

What is established—and what is not?
The reporting establishes the location, the use of orange paint, the banner and the activists’ stated reasons. It does not independently verify the truck’s weight, quantify its energy use or lifecycle emissions, establish a safety comparison, or document a European regulatory decision about the model. The action should therefore be understood as a protest against what the participants said the vehicle represented, not as proof of their technical claims.
