Toyota announced a 2027 Land Cruiser update for a spring 2026 U.S. dealer window, and Lexus announced a 2027 GX that it describes as a minor-update carryover. That Land Cruiser window has passed as of October 3, 2026, and neither announcement supports a five-model list of upcoming U.S. launches.
Why choose a body-on-frame SUV over a crossover?
A body-on-frame SUV uses a separate body mounted to a chassis; many crossovers use a unibody structure. The distinction can matter to shoppers prioritizing off-road hardware, towing capability or a traditional truck-based platform. But the construction alone does not prove that a vehicle is more capable in every situation, more comfortable, or the right choice for everyday driving. Compare the specific model’s equipment and intended use rather than treating “rugged” as a performance guarantee.
The two recently announced 2027 models offer concrete reasons to consider the category: Toyota lists full-time four-wheel drive and a hybrid powertrain for the Land Cruiser, while Lexus identifies the GX as body-on-frame. Their updates, specifications and prices differ, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.
What changed for the 2027 Toyota Land Cruiser?
Toyota announced the 2027 Land Cruiser on April 7, 2026, and said it was expected at U.S. dealers in spring 2026. That was the manufacturer’s announced window, not a future arrival as of October 3, 2026. Toyota characterizes the vehicle as a model-year update, not a new generation. Its 2027 Land Cruiser announcement lists a starting MSRP of $57,880, excluding a $1,450 dealer processing and handling fee that may vary by state and is subject to change.

Powertrain and capability
Toyota says the 2027 Land Cruiser’s i-FORCE MAX hybrid produces 326 net combined horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. The manufacturer lists 23 mpg combined, EPA-estimated, and a maximum towing capacity of 6,000 pounds. These are published specifications and estimates, not independent test results.
Newly announced features
The model-year update adds an available high-mounted air intake, available heated and ventilated second-row outboard seats, and a new Inked exterior color. Toyota also says the vehicle retains full-time four-wheel drive. Availability of optional features can depend on configuration.

What changed for the 2027 Lexus GX?
Lexus announced the 2027 GX on September 16, 2026, describing it as largely carried over with minor updates rather than a newly redesigned SUV. The Lexus announcement calls the GX a body-on-frame SUV and lists a starting MSRP of $69,085, including delivery, processing and handling.
Comfort and access
Standard SmartAccess entry covers the four doors and tailgate. Ventilated rear outboard seats are standard on Luxury, Luxury+ and Overtrail+ grades, not necessarily every GX grade. Lexus also lists dealer-available accessories such as rooftop tents and recovery kits; those accessories are not evidence of standard equipment.

Fuel economy figure
Lexus lists 21 mpg highway, EPA-estimated, for the 2027 GX. That highway figure should not be directly compared with Toyota’s 23 mpg combined Land Cruiser estimate: the measures are different.

Which other Toyota SUVs are actually new arrivals?
2026 Toyota 4Runner: an existing model-year offering
Toyota’s 2026 4Runner release, dated November 5, 2025, called it the second year of the sixth generation and said it was expected at dealers in fall 2025. That timing does not make the 2026 model a vehicle newly heading to dealers in fall 2026. Toyota listed nine grades and a starting MSRP of $41,570, plus a $1,450 delivery, processing and handling charge. Those were the announced figures, not a current transaction price.
Land Cruiser FJ: Japan-market timing only
Toyota Motor Corporation announced that sales of the Land Cruiser FJ commenced in Japan on May 14, 2026. Its announcement establishes Japan-market sales, not U.S. availability or a U.S. dealer-arrival date. It therefore cannot substantiate an upcoming U.S. launch.

Sequoia listing does not establish a new launch
Toyota’s 2027 model-year listing includes the Sequoia, but a listing alone does not establish a new generation or a specific dealer-arrival date. It is not enough to count the Sequoia as one of five imminent U.S. launches.
What the current announcements do—and don’t—support
The confirmed picture is narrower than the “five SUVs heading to dealers soon” premise: one announced 2027 Toyota update with a dealer window that has passed, one 2027 Lexus carryover announcement, existing model-year offerings, and a Japan-market FJ sales announcement. The manufacturer information cited here does not document five upcoming U.S. body-on-frame SUV launches with dealer timing. For a purchase decision, check current local inventory and the exact trim’s equipment rather than relying on an old arrival forecast or treating a model-year listing as a launch announcement.
