For rebonding exterior side-view mirror glass, look for an automotive silicone mirror adhesive whose label supports both the mirror backing and the housing materials, as well as outdoor use. Silicone is commonly recommended for this repair because it stays elastic and resists moisture and weathering. If the housing is cracked, a compatible epoxy may suit a rigid housing repair—but it is not the default choice for bonding mirror glass. A product labeled “rearview mirror adhesive” may instead be intended for an interior mirror button attached to a windshield, so check the specified use before buying.
Choose adhesive for the surfaces and the damage
The right option depends on what has failed: the bond holding intact mirror glass, the mirror housing, or the glass itself. Inspect the back of the replacement glass and the recess in the housing, then check the adhesive label for compatibility with both materials and exterior exposure. Loctite’s guide, “Car mirror glue: Replace your side mirror with the right glue”, identifies automotive silicone mirror adhesive as a commonly recommended category for the mirror repair. It notes silicone’s elasticity and resistance to moisture and weathering.
| Repair need | Evidence-backed direction | Check before proceeding |
|---|---|---|
| Rebond side-view mirror glass | Consider automotive silicone mirror adhesive. | Confirm the label supports the backing and housing materials, exterior use, and your mirror design. |
| Repair a rigid cracked housing | A compatible outdoor epoxy may be an option. | Check compatibility with the specific plastic or metal. This is not a general recommendation for bonding glass. |
| Replace broken glass | Look for vehicle-specific replacement side-view mirror glass or a complete assembly. | Match year, make, model, side, heating, and any other mirror features. |
| Reattach an interior rearview mirror button to a windshield | Use a product specifically intended for that application. | Do not assume its instructions apply to an exterior side-view mirror. |
Why rearview mirror adhesive may be the wrong product
“Rearview mirror adhesive” commonly refers to kits for attaching an interior mirror button or bracket to a windshield—not bonding exterior side-view mirror glass. Permatex 81844’s instructions describe windshield-button use and expressly exclude plastic buttons. Permatex’s product instructions specify a 50–75°F (10–24°C) repair temperature and a 15-minute wait before mounting the mirror. Those directions apply to that windshield-button product, not side-view mirror installation. 3M describes its High Bond 08749 as a two-part structural acrylic for permanently attaching rearview mirror brackets to windshields; that application likewise does not establish suitability for exterior mirror glass. See 3M’s product page.
When replacement is the better solution
Adhesive is not a fix for shattered glass or damaged backing. In those cases, compare a vehicle-specific replacement glass with a full mirror assembly. Confirm the exact year, make, model, side, heating, and any other electrical or physical features before ordering. Without those details, there is no reliable universal fitment recommendation or assurance that a particular adhesive repair method is OEM-approved.

Prepare and bond the glass carefully
Loctite’s general guide advises wearing safety goggles and gloves around broken glass, clearing fragments carefully, and removing the old mirror without damaging its housing. Follow the selected adhesive’s own surface-preparation, application, and cure directions; the guide says to use masking tape to keep the replacement from sliding while the adhesive cures. Cure time varies by product, so do not transfer the 15-minute windshield-button instruction for Permatex 81844 to a side-view mirror adhesive.
- Put on protective eyewear and gloves. Carefully remove loose broken fragments.
- Remove the old mirror without damaging the housing, and prepare the surfaces as directed by the adhesive manufacturer.
- Apply only an adhesive labeled for the materials being joined and exterior conditions.
- Hold the replacement in position with masking tape if needed, then leave it undisturbed for the cure time stated on the product instructions.
These are general guide directions, not vehicle-specific service instructions. Avoid assuming a prying tool or heat is safe for every mirror assembly.

How to make the purchase decision
- For intact glass that has come loose: start with an automotive silicone mirror adhesive, but verify material and exterior-use compatibility on the specific product label.
- For a rigid housing crack: consider epoxy only if its manufacturer supports the housing material and outdoor conditions.
- For shattered glass or damaged backing: compare correctly matched replacement glass or an assembly instead of relying on adhesive.
- For an interior windshield mirror: choose a windshield-button kit and follow its separate instructions; do not use that category as evidence for a side-view repair.
The cited guidance is manufacturer advice, not a controlled comparison of competing products. It does not establish a single “best overall” adhesive or an adhesive approved for every vehicle.
