China’s auto market is shifting on two fronts: electric-car adoption has surged, while China-based brands have gained ground against foreign marques. Those are related trends, not the same statistic. The figures show strong change, but not a permanent collapse in foreign-brand sales or a wholesale abandonment of gasoline cars.
Two changes are happening, and they measure different things
Electric-car adoption measures the powertrain mix: how many cars sold are electric. Brand share measures which automakers sell the cars. A China-based brand can sell gasoline vehicles, and foreign automakers sell electric models in China. Vehicles made in China by a foreign brand or joint venture do not automatically count as a China-based brand.
The International Energy Agency reports that electric-car sales in China grew at an annual rate above 75% from 2020 through 2024, while their share of sales rose by around 10 percentage points on average each year. That describes adoption of electric cars, not the share held by domestic brands. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2026.
A narrower measure, battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales, reached 8.1 million in China in 2025, up 24% from 2024, according to the International Council on Clean Transportation. BEVs are not the same as plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and neither figure should be treated as a count of all new-energy vehicles or of domestic-brand sales. China-based brands gained share in 2025, but not uniformly
CPCA retail-sales figures reported by Reuters show the competition among brands in China’s overall car market in 2025. Geely Auto’s share rose to 11%, from 7.7% in 2024. BYD, by contrast, slipped to 14.7% from 16.2%. Volkswagen’s two Chinese joint ventures together held 10.9%, down from 12.2%. These are brand-share figures for the overall market, not EV-market shares. Reuters, January 9, 2026.
The figures suggest a competitive reordering rather than a uniform surge for every Chinese automaker. Geely gained, while BYD remained a large player but lost share year over year. A change in share also does not, on its own, tell whether a company’s unit sales rose or fell: the total market and competitors’ sales matter too.

Why buyers are considering local models
Local brands compete on more than nationality or powertrain. The Associated Press reports that local premium models have attracted buyers with lower prices, electronics, and comfort, and that Chinese automakers have introduced technology at lower prices. These are reported explanations for consumer appeal, not the result of a controlled study that isolates one cause. Associated Press, China’s electric-car competition.
For buyers comparing cars, the relevant question is therefore what a model offers at its price: range and charging suitability, cabin and software features, comfort, service access, and the available powertrain. A brand’s home country alone does not establish whether a vehicle is a better fit.

Early-2026 rankings show the trend can reverse in the short term
Foreign brands had a short-term recovery at the start of 2026. Reuters reported that Volkswagen reclaimed the top sales position in January and February, while Toyota also regained ground as greener-car incentives faded. BYD ranked fourth in that period, with 7.1% share. The two-month result is a reminder that incentives and timing can move rankings; it does not erase the broader changes in EV adoption and 2025 brand shares. Reuters, March 11, 2026.
By April, foreign marques together held 30.3% of China’s market in CPCA figures reported by the South China Morning Post. The report said they had regained share earlier in the year but lost momentum as consumers returned to EVs. EV momentum does not mean gasoline cars have disappeared
China’s May 2026 market signals point in different directions. Chinese passenger-car exports rose 73% year over year, according to industry-group data cited by the AP, while sales of internal-combustion cars fell almost 42% from a year earlier. The latter is a year-over-year comparison for that month, not evidence that gasoline cars have vanished or that the same decline occurred across all of 2026.
The AP also reported analyst Paul Gong of UBS linking high oil prices at the time with greater interest in EVs. That is a contemporaneous interpretation, not proof that fuel prices alone caused the shift. Incentives, product launches, prices, and buyer preferences can all affect demand. What the evidence supports
- Electric-car adoption in China grew rapidly from 2020 to 2024, and BEV sales continued growing in 2025.
- China-based automakers have gained competitive standing, but their results differ; in 2025 Geely gained share while BYD’s share declined.
- Foreign marques can recover share over shorter periods, as the early-2026 rankings show.
- The available figures support a strong market shift, not a claim that Chinese consumers have permanently rejected every foreign brand or gasoline vehicle.
