One concrete example is BYD’s five-seat Sealion 7 electric SUV, which BYD India currently lists in three variants from ₹41.90 lakh ex-showroom. Its advertised range figures are based on the NEDC test cycle, not independent real-world testing.
What the Sealion 7 tells us about Chinese EVs in India
The Sealion 7 is evidence that a Chinese automaker is competing in India’s premium electric-SUV segment. It is not, by itself, evidence of a nationwide market takeover. BYD said in January 2026 that the model had passed 2,300 sales in India, but that is a dated company-reported figure—not independently audited market-wide data.
There is no comparable current dataset in the available evidence establishing the size, growth rate, or Chinese-brand share of India’s passenger-EV market. The strongest defensible framing is therefore that Chinese brands are competing for Indian buyers, with the Sealion 7 as a prominent example—not that they already dominate or are certain to do so.
BYD Sealion 7: current listed variants and prices
BYD India’s listing, accessed October 8, 2026, describes the Sealion 7 as a five-seat electric SUV and gives these ex-showroom prices, battery capacities, and NEDC range claims:

These are manufacturer-listed figures, not independent test results or a promise of real-world distance. Range in everyday use can differ from a laboratory-cycle claim. Prices are ex-showroom; taxes, insurance, registration, dealer charges, and local availability can affect the on-road price. Check BYD’s current electric-car listing and obtain a written local quote before comparing final costs.
Which Sealion 7 variant makes sense?
Dynamic: lowest listed entry price
At ₹41.90 lakh ex-showroom, the Dynamic is the least expensive listed variant. BYD lists a 71.8 kWh battery and a 520 km NEDC claim. Those figures identify its position in the lineup; they do not establish what range an individual owner will achieve.

Premium: the longest listed NEDC range
The Premium is listed at ₹49.90 lakh ex-showroom with an 82.56 kWh battery and a 567 km NEDC claim—the highest range figure among the three listed variants. Buyers should weigh that stated advantage against the price difference and their local on-road quote.
Performance: higher price, but not the highest listed range
BYD lists the Performance at ₹55.90 lakh ex-showroom, with the same 82.56 kWh battery capacity as Premium and a 542 km NEDC claim. It costs more than Premium but has a lower stated NEDC range. The figures here do not establish the variants’ power, drivetrain, charging speed, or other equipment differences; confirm those details with BYD before deciding what the extra cost buys.

How to read BYD’s earlier price announcement
On January 2, 2026, BYD announced a ₹50,000 increase for Premium, taking it to ₹49.40 lakh, while Performance remained at ₹54.90 lakh. The company also reported that the Sealion 7 had passed 2,300 Indian sales. Those are historical company statements, not the current price list: BYD’s newer listing gives different prices and adds the Dynamic variant. See the January 2026 announcement for that dated context.
Charging: what the launch offer does—and does not—tell buyers
At the Sealion 7’s Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 launch, BYD described a booking-period offer that included a complimentary 7 kW home charger and installation. That was a launch promotion, not confirmation of a current offer. The launch announcement also described Premium and Performance with an 82.56 kWh battery and NEDC claims of 567 km and 542 km, respectively. Ask a local dealer whether any charger or installation is currently included, and confirm compatibility and installation terms for your home; the historical offer does not establish that a separate charger will work with the car.

What India’s EV import policy means for BYD
India’s Ministry of Commerce & Industry announced a policy on March 15, 2024 that links conditional lower-duty imports to investment and domestic manufacturing. The government release describes a minimum investment of ₹4,150 crore, factory setup and commercial production within three years, and domestic value-addition milestones of 25% by year three and 50% by year five. It also describes a conditional 15% customs duty for qualifying imports with a minimum CIF value of USD 35,000, subject to the policy’s conditions and caps.
This is a policy route, not proof that BYD has qualified, applied, or committed to localizing production under it. The details and qualifications are set out in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry release.

What to check before buying
- Use an on-road quote. Compare written, city-specific totals rather than ex-showroom prices alone.
- Treat NEDC as a claimed test-cycle figure. Do not budget around it as a guaranteed real-world range.
- Compare the actual variant equipment. The listed price, battery, and range do not explain all differences between trims; ask the dealer for a current specification sheet.
- Confirm local ownership support. Check dealer and service access in your city, and ask for written warranty and service terms.
- Get charging details in writing. Verify whether a charger is included now, what installation covers, and whether your parking and electrical setup are suitable.
So, are Chinese EVs about to take over Indian roads?
The Sealion 7 shows that a Chinese brand is offering a premium electric SUV in India, with three currently listed variants and a starting ex-showroom price of ₹41.90 lakh. But a model’s presence—and even a company-reported sales milestone—cannot establish national market share or prove a coming takeover. That broader claim needs comparable, dated Indian passenger-EV sales or registration data that distinguishes Chinese brands from the rest of the market.
