There is no single fluid answer for every Subaru TR690. Subaru specifies different CVT fluids for different TR690 applications, so match the vehicle’s model year and engine to its current service information before buying fluid or servicing the transmission. Subaru calls the unit Lineartronic CVT Generation 1; service information may also call it TR690.
What does TR690 mean?
TR690 is a Subaru transmission-family designation, not a complete vehicle-fitment or fluid specification. Subaru’s June 2014 2015 Legacy and Outback New Technology Training describes the transmission as Lineartronic CVT Generation 1 and says service information may refer to it as TR690. The same reference describes a continuously variable transmission with automatic, manual, and temporary-manual operating modes.
That June 2014 reference gives an automatic-mode ratio range of 2.37:1 to 0.39:1. Treat that as a dated, generation-specific technical description, not a specification guaranteed for every later TR690 application.
Which fluid does a Subaru TR690 use?
It depends on the exact application. Subaru’s 2025 revision of bulletin 01-167-08R lists High Torque CVTF for specified older high-torque applications, but CVTF LV for the Ascent and 2020 Legacy/Outback 2.4L turbo TR690 applications. The designation alone is not enough to select fluid.

These are examples in Subaru’s cited materials, not a complete worldwide fitment list. Check the applicable service information for the vehicle’s model year, engine, market, and VIN before service or purchase. Subaru’s 2014 reference warns not to mix orange High Torque CVTF with other varieties; do not use that fluid, or CVTF LV, as a universal substitute.
How should fluid level be checked?
Subaru’s June 2014 training reference describes checking CVT fluid level at 30–40°C (86–104°F), with the engine idling after moving the selector through specified positions. Temperature and operating conditions matter for this procedure; it should not be treated as a general fill or check instruction for every TR690.

The booklet expressly cautions: “THE TRB IS NOT INTENDED TO BE USED AS A SUPPLEMENT OR SUBSTITUTE FOR THE SERVICE MANUAL.” Use the service manual that applies to the specific vehicle. If you are not equipped to follow its procedure safely and accurately, have a qualified technician perform the check.

Subaru bulletin 16-103-16R, revised 2019-01-08, addresses a small number of customer concerns involving fluid seepage on listed TR690-equipped vehicles. It directs technicians to confirm that the leaking fluid is CVT fluid rather than engine oil, then inspect the oil-pump chain cover; the bulletin identifies its sealant as a likely source and describes cleaning, inspection, and resealing as applicable.

What to verify before servicing or buying fluid
- Identify the vehicle’s model year, engine, and market; TR690 alone does not establish exact fitment.
- Check the applicable Subaru service manual and current parts or service information for the VIN-specific fluid specification.
- Do not mix CVT fluid varieties or assume that one TR690 application’s fluid applies to another.
- For seepage, first establish that the fluid is CVTF and determine whether the vehicle is covered by the relevant bulletin before repair.
