Cars are adopting 48-volt electrical systems because they can supply more power with less current than 12-volt systems, making high-power loads easier to support and enabling mild-hybrid features such as regenerative braking and engine torque assist. In many cars, 48 volts supplements rather than replaces the familiar 12-volt network.
What a 48-volt system does in a car
A typical 48-volt mild-hybrid system combines a 48-volt battery, an integrated starter-generator and a DC-DC converter. During braking or deceleration, the starter-generator can act as a generator and return some of the car’s kinetic energy to the battery. The stored energy can later help the engine accelerate, make stop-start operation smoother, or supply selected electrical loads. Bosch describes these components and their relationship in its 48-volt battery overview; Valeo outlines similar functions in its 48-volt mild-hybrid system description.
The exact capability depends on the design. A starter-generator that assists the combustion engine does not, by itself, make a car a full hybrid or mean it can travel under electric power alone. Valeo describes different levels of hybridization, including a system with an additional propulsion motor; the 48-volt label alone does not tell you which functions a particular vehicle has.
Why raise the voltage from 12 to 48 volts?
For the same electrical power, a higher voltage requires less current. Texas Instruments’ February 2025 white paper illustrates this with a 1,200-watt load: it draws 100 amperes at 12 volts and 25 amperes at 48 volts. That is one-quarter the current at four times the voltage.

Lower current can reduce wiring losses and make it possible to use thinner conductors, which may reduce harness weight and cost. The advantage is most relevant for high-current loads; it shrinks as the load’s current demand falls. The vehicle’s design determines the actual savings, so the voltage comparison does not guarantee a particular reduction in weight, cost or energy use. Texas Instruments explains the trade-offs in “48V Automotive Systems: Why Now?”.
Vehicles also have more electrical consumers and increasingly capable electronic systems than older designs. Bosch points to added consumers and processors for highly automated functions as reasons for higher-power supplies in its system overview. A 48-volt rail can help serve such demands without requiring every high-power circuit to carry very high current at 12 volts.

Do 48-volt cars still have a 12-volt battery?
Many 48-volt mild hybrids retain a 12-volt battery and conventional 12-volt equipment. A DC-DC converter steps power down from the 48-volt system so the established 12-volt network can continue supplying its loads. Bosch says its 12-volt battery is linked to, not replaced by, the 48-volt system; Valeo Service also describes the retained battery and converter in its 48-volt technology explanation.
There is no single distribution layout used by every automaker. Texas Instruments describes designs that keep 12-volt distribution central and reserve 48 volts for high-current loads, designs that distribute both voltages, and designs that distribute 48 volts more broadly while creating lower-voltage rails near components. Keeping the existing 12-volt network and adding selected 48-volt loads is less disruptive; broader 48-volt distribution can offer more wiring benefits but requires more extensive redesign.

How 48-volt mild hybrids differ from other electrified cars
A 48-volt mild hybrid is an incremental form of electrification: its electric machine typically recovers energy and assists the engine rather than replacing it as the source of propulsion. That distinguishes it from a full hybrid or battery-electric vehicle, though the capabilities of individual systems vary.
| Architecture | What the 48-volt system does | 12-volt network | Design implications |
|---|---|---|---|
| 48 volts added to an existing 12-volt layout | Supplies selected high-current loads and may support mild-hybrid functions. | Remains central for established equipment; a converter links the systems. | Less disruptive than moving more distribution to 48 volts; wiring benefits apply mainly to the selected loads. |
| Broader 48-volt distribution | Supplies more of the vehicle’s electrical demand; lower-voltage rails can be generated near components. | May be supplied locally rather than distributed as centrally. | Can deliver more harness benefit, but calls for more extensive redesign and integration work. |
| More capable 48-volt hybridization | May add an electric propulsion motor, depending on the system. | Vehicle-specific; a 48-volt label does not establish the exact layout. | Capabilities vary by implementation; do not infer electric-only driving from voltage alone. |
The first two layouts are architecture options discussed by Texas Instruments; the distinction between torque-assist and propulsion-capable systems is reflected in Valeo’s product descriptions. Neither source establishes that all vehicles follow these categories in exactly the same way.

- EXCELLENT SOLUTION Bisida's BMS is manufactured using excellent protective integrated circuit IC and excellent Mosfet, making it robust, long-lasting and reliable
Why automakers may choose 48 volts
A 48-volt mild-hybrid system can add energy recovery and torque assistance without requiring the full architecture of a full hybrid. Bosch describes integration with existing vehicle concepts as relatively easy and cost-effective. Valeo also promotes its systems as less costly or easier to implement than full-hybrid alternatives; those are supplier claims, not universal cost comparisons.
The 48-volt approach also gives manufacturers a way to supply higher-power equipment while managing current and wiring demands. The trade-off is that it adds components and integration work rather than eliminating complexity.

Does 48 volts improve fuel economy?
It can, when energy recovery and electric assistance reduce the combustion engine’s workload, but the benefit depends on the vehicle, system and driving conditions. The figures published by suppliers and automakers are specific claims, not a universal real-world result:
- Volkswagen’s 2019 archived description of a 48-volt mild hybrid paired with its 1.5-litre TSI evo petrol engine said the system could save around 0.4 litres per 100 kilometres, depending on driving style. Volkswagen presented this as an estimate for that system, not an independent fleet-wide measurement. Its 2019 announcement describes the belt-integrated starter-generator, lithium-ion battery and converter.
- Valeo says its Hybrid4all Level 1 system offers 5% fuel savings compared with a 12-volt system, while its Level 2 system with electric propulsion offers around 15%. These are Valeo product claims, not results that can be applied to every 48-volt car.
These figures use different systems and comparison bases, so they should not be treated as a head-to-head test. The available sources do not establish an independently measured average fuel saving across 48-volt vehicles.
What are the trade-offs?
A 48-volt system requires a battery, power electronics, wiring and vehicle-level integration. Bosch identifies packaging as a constraint where mass and space are tightly managed. Texas Instruments notes that combining 12- and 48-volt circuits creates harness-routing and potential short-circuit concerns, while functional-safety requirements can add cost. Broader 48-volt distribution may increase wiring benefits but also increases redesign work.
Those costs and complications help explain why 48 volts is an option rather than a universal replacement for 12 volts. Manufacturers can apply the higher-voltage rail where its advantages matter most and retain familiar 12-volt circuits elsewhere.
