The pace slowed, but prices kept climbing. Higher claim costs—especially more severe claims and expensive repairs—help explain the national trend; they do not explain every driver’s renewal. Your own rate also depends on your location, vehicle, coverage, driving details and insurer.
How much did car insurance prices rise in 2024?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported an 11.3% December-to-December increase in its motor vehicle insurance Consumer Price Index (CPI) for 2024, following a 20.3% increase from December 2022 to December 2023. This is a national index of prices for selected policies, not a forecast of an individual renewal bill or a claim that every driver, insurer or state had the same increase. BLS’s comparison of 2024 CPI price changes provides the December-to-December figures.
Insurance inflation versus household spending
A separate BLS measure estimates how much consumers spent: average vehicle-insurance spending per consumer unit rose from $1,775 in 2023 to $1,993 in 2024, a 12.3% increase. The accompanying report also cites a 17.8% vehicle-insurance CPI increase for 2024. These figures are not interchangeable: the spending estimate comes from the Consumer Expenditure Surveys, while the 11.3% figure above compares CPI index levels in December 2023 and December 2024. The measures and time comparisons differ, so they should not be read as contradictory renewal estimates. BLS’s 2024 consumer-expenditure report explains the spending measure.
Why did insurance costs keep rising?
Insurers set prices partly to reflect expected future claim costs. A key pressure in 2024 was claim severity: when a collision is more expensive to repair or a claim costs more to settle, insurers can face higher costs even if claim counts do not rise at the same rate. BLS says increased severity from auto accidents influenced vehicle-insurance spending in 2024. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) consumer explainer puts the pricing principle this way: “Insurance companies set premiums based on the expected cost of future claims.”

Repairs can cost more than they used to
Modern vehicle parts and infotainment technology can make repairs more costly, and mechanic labor shortages can add pressure, according to BLS. Its year-end CPI comparison found that motor vehicle maintenance and repair prices rose 6.2% and parts and equipment prices rose 1.3% from December 2023 to December 2024. Meanwhile, new vehicle prices fell 0.4% and used vehicle prices fell 3.3% over that same period. That contrast points to repair and claim costs—not rising vehicle purchase prices—as a better-supported explanation for continuing insurance inflation. Claim trends and insurer finances add context
BLS’s 2024 consumer-expenditure report relays figures from LexisNexis Risk Solutions’ Auto Insurance Trends Report: since 2020, bodily-injury claim severity rose 20%, material-damage severity rose 47%, and total-loss claims rose 29%. Those are figures attributed to the cited 2024 report, not BLS survey findings.

NAIC’s 2025 report on 2024 industry results describes four consecutive years of roughly 10% premium growth. Along with lower economic inflation in 2024, that growth helped insurers reverse underwriting losses from the prior two years, which had been driven by high claim severity. In personal auto physical damage, net premiums earned rose 16.8% while net losses incurred fell 6.4%; in personal auto liability, earned premiums rose 12.6% while losses rose 4.3%. These are industry accounting aggregates, not a measure of any one customer’s premium or proof that insurer profits alone caused consumer price increases. Why your renewal may differ from the national trend
The motor vehicle insurance CPI is designed to track price changes while holding driver characteristics constant. BLS selects policies that account for details including vehicle age and description, garaging location, vehicle use, annual mileage, coverage and limits, driver age, sex, driving record and marital status, plus applicable discounts, surcharges and fees. Your insurer and state rules, policy details and individual rating factors can therefore produce a change that is unlike the national CPI movement. Driving behavior may also be reflected through telematics, depending on the insurer and policy. The national trend establishes that prices rose overall; it cannot identify why your own bill changed. - Check the policy details. Confirm that the listed drivers, vehicles, garaging address, annual mileage, coverages and limits are accurate.
- Compare equivalent quotes. Use the same liability limits, deductibles, covered drivers and vehicles, and other coverage terms. A lower price is not a meaningful comparison if the protection differs.
- Review discounts and fees. Check which discounts, surcharges and fees are included, and whether the assumptions used for each quote match your circumstances.
A quote comparison can help you assess options, but it does not guarantee savings. The BLS index and industry reports describe broad patterns, not the cause of a specific increase.
