But the publicly available excerpt does not reveal the model-by-model pairings, so it does not support naming specific cars as buys to avoid. The guide is a comparative starting point—not proof that every example is defective, unsafe, or a poor choice for every buyer.
What Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide says
Consumer Reports’ article, updated September 9, 2026, says its auto experts selected popular vehicles across 11 key categories that fell short in its evaluations and paired them with alternatives carrying a higher Overall Score.
The evaluation combines 50 objective and subjective tests at Consumer Reports’ Auto Test Center with annual owner-survey feedback on about 380,000 vehicles, according to the 2026 article. Those 380,000 are vehicles reported on in the survey—not vehicles independently road-tested. The excerpt does not disclose each comparison’s score gap, model-specific reasoning, or detailed score weighting.
Why this article doesn’t name the cars
The model-by-model list is not present in the publicly available excerpt. Without the full list and current model-year ratings, naming candidates or their supposed replacements would risk attributing recommendations and shortcomings that the available evidence does not establish. The title’s “avoid” framing should therefore be read as Consumer Reports’ comparative judgment within its guide, not a blanket warning about every vehicle of a model line.

How to interpret an “avoid” comparison
It is a comparison, not a defect finding
A higher Overall Score establishes that CR rates the stated alternative more highly overall; it does not, by itself, show why one vehicle scored lower or prove a specific reliability or safety problem. Compare the model years and trims actually under consideration, then check the individual ratings for the dimensions that matter to you, such as road-test performance, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, efficiency, or practicality.
Survey-based reliability is a prediction
Consumer Reports says its reliability predictions draw on member survey responses. When a vehicle has not changed significantly and was not redesigned for the latest model year, CR averages the newest three model years’ overall reliability scores. Its cited methodology excerpt covers model years 2000 through 2025, including some early 2026 models. That history informs a prediction; it is not a guarantee about an individual car. Standard safety features are a baseline, not a ranking
CR says the vehicles in the comparisons come standard with automatic emergency braking, highway-speed AEB, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic warning unless noted otherwise. That statement describes a feature baseline; it does not establish that every vehicle is equally safe or that there are no exceptions.
What to check before choosing a new car
- Confirm the exact model year, trim, and configuration in the rating; ratings and equipment can differ across them.
- Look for the specific reason CR prefers the alternative rather than treating the Overall Score alone as an explanation.
- Compare the vehicles on your priorities, including passenger and cargo space, efficiency, driving feel, and ownership costs.
- Check the safety equipment on the exact vehicle you would buy, especially where the guide notes an exception.
- Use the comparison as one input alongside a test drive and other current, vehicle-specific information.
If you are shopping for a used car
Do not substitute a list of less-reliable used model years for CR’s September 2026 comparison of popular cars and alternatives: they are different guides answering different questions. Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide notes that even a generally recommended used model can have problems in an individual example, and advises a thorough inspection by a certified mechanic before purchase.
