The quickest production Camaro in MotorTrend’s published quarter-mile list is the 2017 Camaro ZL1, at 11.5 seconds. That list contains nine tested cars—not ten—and its results span different years and test conditions, so it is not a same-day comparison. The ranking below sticks to those nine production-car results rather than inventing a tenth entry or mixing in modified and race-only cars.
What “fastest” means in this comparison
Quarter-mile elapsed time is the ranking measure here: lower time means a quicker run over that distance. Trap speed, 0–60 mph acceleration, top speed and lap times measure different aspects of performance, so they belong alongside the ranking as context, not as interchangeable ways to order the cars.
MotorTrend’s 2023 production-car list reports the following quarter-mile results. These are published tests of different model years, not a controlled back-to-back comparison. The list distinguishes production cars from modified builds; for example, its separate modified-car coverage includes a 1998 drag car, which does not belong in a production ranking. The list establishes nine entries and a tie for eighth; it does not establish a tenth comparable production-car result. Special-order COPO drag-racing Camaros and modified builds have different purposes or specifications, so adding either would change the comparison rather than complete it. Why the 2017 ZL1 leads—and what its other numbers mean
MotorTrend reports that its tested 2017 ZL1 ran the quarter-mile in 11.5 seconds, reached 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and recorded a 198-mph top speed. Those are MotorTrend’s reported results, not a guarantee for every car or a promise of repeatable performance in all conditions. Chevrolet’s 2023 brochure gives a useful transmission-specific specification check for the sixth-generation ZL1. It lists the supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 at 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. Its acceleration figures vary by configuration:

These are Chevrolet’s 2023 brochure figures, not entries in MotorTrend’s test ranking. “Top track speed” is the brochure’s label; it is not the same measure as a quarter-mile trap speed. The ZL1 1LE trades some top speed for track focus
The 1LE is not simply a faster ZL1 in every sense. Chevrolet’s 2023 brochure lists the ZL1 1LE at 1.10 g maximum lateral acceleration and a 101-foot stopping distance from 60 mph, compared with 1.02 g and 107 feet for the ZL1 coupe. Those figures describe cornering grip and braking, not straight-line speed; the same brochure lists the 1LE’s top track speed as 191 mph, below the automatic ZL1 coupe’s 198 mph.

Chevrolet lists Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar 3R summer-only tires on the 2023 ZL1 1LE in 305/30R19 front and 325/30R19 rear sizes. The front size alone is not a complete matched set. Chevrolet advises using GM-approved tire-and-wheel combinations, warns against using summer-only tires in winter and notes competition-oriented tires can hydroplane in wet conditions. Track pace tells a different story
A quarter-mile ranking does not identify the best Camaro around a road course. In a 2013 technical backgrounder, General Motors reported Nürburgring Nordschleife times of 1:53.71 for the 2014 Z/28, 1:56.58 for the 2012 ZL1 and 1:58.85 for the 2014 1LE. That comparison favors the Z/28 on that circuit, but a lap time is specific to its venue and conditions and cannot be treated as a universal ranking across tracks. How these cars fit into Camaro history
Chevrolet’s official timeline dates the first generation to 1967–1969, notes the 1969 special-order COPO cars built for drag racing, and identifies the 2012 ZL1 as the first supercharged Camaro. The sixth generation ran from 2016 through 2024; Chevrolet announced that the Camaro line would retire after the 2024 model year. These milestones help explain the spread of cars in the quarter-mile list, but they do not make generations or special editions directly comparable test categories. The final Collector’s Edition was limited to 350 units for 2024. In the announcement, Chevrolet design director Rich Scheer said: “We found it fitting for this Collector’s Edition Camaro to officially recognize the significance of the original code name and share it with Camaro enthusiasts.” The edition is a historical bookend, not a tenth entry in the measured quarter-mile ranking.
