A Moneycontrol report published October 8, 2026, described September inventory at around 45 days, near a one-year high, and said the stock was squeezing dealer profitability. The report documents both price increases and offers, but does not establish whether the average buyer’s final transaction price rose or fell across the market.
Why prices can rise while discounts grow
A listed-price increase and a discount are different parts of a car deal. An automaker can raise a model’s official price while offering a benefit on a particular vehicle, or a dealer can discount stock to attract a buyer. That can leave some buyers with sizable offers even as the manufacturer’s price list moves upward.

Moneycontrol reported that automakers raised prices between two and four times since January 2026, without suggesting every company or model did so the same number of times. Tata Motors’ prices rose by up to ₹25,000 from October 1, 2026, while Maruti Suzuki’s rose by up to ₹30,000 effective August 1, according to the report. These are reported maximum increases, not a uniform change across either company’s entire range.
The same report cited offers of up to ₹3.35 lakh on the Tata Curvv EV and up to ₹2.75 lakh on the Tata Harrier EV, benefits of up to ₹1 lakh on the Hyundai Creta, and Honda discounts or benefits of nearly ₹67,000. Those are dated figures reported on October 8, not guaranteed current deals. The report does not itemize every offer’s conditions or calculate the market-wide net change in transaction prices.

How elevated inventory puts pressure on dealers
Unsold vehicles cost money to hold
Dealers typically finance vehicles bought from automakers and pay interest while the cars remain unsold. More days of stock can therefore mean a larger carrying-cost burden. To turn stock into sales and reduce that time, a dealer or manufacturer may offer incentives on selected vehicles.
FADA president Sai Giridhar told Moneycontrol on October 6, 2026, “We have raised a red flag on the rising inventory,” referring to the build-up reported in the market. The article also reported dealer concerns that some automakers had cut commissions, including on electric vehicles. Giridhar cited an EV dealer-margin range of 3.5–4%; that is his reported figure, not an independently verified, industry-wide margin measure.

September dispatches exceeded retail sales
Moneycontrol, citing FADA figures, reported that 4.6 lakh passenger vehicles were dispatched to dealers in September 2026, compared with around 4.27 lakh passenger-vehicle retail sales. Dispatches are vehicles sent into dealer channels; retail sales record sales to customers. They measure different stages of distribution, and the report calculated that the gap added nearly 33,000 vehicles to dealer inventory during the month.

At September-end, dealer inventory was around 45 days, the report said—near a one-year high and at a level last seen in November 2025. The underlying FADA release and its detailed methodology were not available in the reporting, so these figures should be understood as reported by Moneycontrol rather than as independently validated here.

Why the advertised benefit may not be the buyer’s saving
A headline “benefit” is not necessarily an unconditional cash discount. Moneycontrol’s examples do not break down every offer into cash, exchange, finance, or other components. The practical value can depend on the model and powertrain, the specific dealer and location, available stock, the offer date, and buyer eligibility.
For a specific purchase, compare the written offer against the vehicle’s invoice price and total amount payable. Ask the dealer to separate any unconditional price reduction from exchange or finance-linked benefits, and confirm the terms and stock availability before relying on a reported figure. EVs and strong hybrids were among the categories the report said had some of the largest incentives, but that does not mean every vehicle in either category carries the same offer.

Will festive demand ease the stock build-up?
Automakers expressed confidence that festive demand would support sales, but that expectation is not proof that inventory has already come down. Maruti Suzuki senior executive officer for marketing and sales Partho Banerjee said on October 1, 2026, “I don’t find any reason for the absolute numbers to go down.” He also indicated that growth in percentage terms could moderate against a high comparison base. That is a company representative’s outlook, not a confirmed market forecast.

For dealers, the risk is that inventory remains elevated long enough to increase financing costs and force deeper discounting, particularly as vehicles approach a model-year change and older stock becomes harder to sell. Whether festive sales relieve that pressure depends on actual customer demand relative to the vehicles continuing to arrive at dealerships.
