The vote would give the union’s bargaining committee authority to call a strike if necessary; it does not itself call a strike or mean one is certain. The dates and status below reflect Unifor’s October 6 announcement.
When is the Unifor–Stellantis strike-authorization vote?
Unifor announced that the vote is scheduled for October 17–18, 2026, and that results are expected October 19. Those dates were announced on October 6; check for a later update before relying on them, since bargaining developments could change the schedule. Unifor’s announcement does not say that a strike has been called.

Does a strike-authorization vote mean workers will strike?
No. A strike-authorization vote asks members whether to authorize their bargaining committee to call a strike if necessary. Unifor says the authorization “does not automatically mean a strike will take place.” It is a step in the bargaining process, not a strike notice or a decision by itself to stop work.
Unifor describes strike action as a last resort and says the ability to strike can help create conditions for an agreement. Whether any strike follows depends on negotiations and subsequent decisions; the scheduled vote alone does not establish that outcome.

Why does Unifor say negotiations are at an impasse?
Unifor says the central dispute concerns the future of Brampton Assembly in Ontario and the terms for settling an economic pattern agreement covering members at other Canadian facilities. The union says Stellantis has maintained a position involving closure and sale of the Brampton plant to Roshel, and that the economic pattern agreement for other facilities is conditional on an agreement on Brampton. These are descriptions of Stellantis’s position as reported by Unifor, not independently verified statements from the company.
- Brampton Assembly: Unifor says the plant’s future, including a proposed closure and sale, is a key bargaining issue.
- Pattern agreement: The union says the economic settlement for workers at other facilities is tied to reaching a Brampton agreement, a condition it has rejected.
- Broader job security: Unifor frames the dispute as concerning job security and the future of Stellantis operations across Canada. It has also cited a lack of confirmation on forecast plans for Windsor Assembly and Etobicoke Casting.
Unifor reported that bargaining opened September 1 for more than 9,000 members at Stellantis facilities in Canada. On September 11, after 10 days of intensive negotiations, the union said the parties had reached an impasse and paused talks. Its September 11 statement said the parties had set that date as a target for a tentative settlement.

What was the bargaining and strike status before the vote announcement?
The collective agreement expired September 20. In a September 24 update, Unifor said the parties remained in conciliation, were not in a legal strike or lockout position at that time, and that existing terms and conditions remained in effect. The update also said Stellantis’s position on closing and selling Brampton Assembly to Roshel had not changed, according to the union. Read Unifor’s September 24 update.

On October 6, Unifor announced the vote dates. That newer announcement supersedes the September 24 update’s earlier statement that no vote had yet been scheduled. It did not announce a strike or set out a legal strike deadline. The September 24 description of legal status applies to that date; it should not be treated as confirmation of the parties’ legal position after the later announcement.

What happens next?
- October 17–18: Members covered by the negotiations are scheduled to vote on strike authorization.
- October 19: Unifor says it plans to announce the results.
- After the result: An authorization would give the bargaining committee authority to call a strike if necessary. It would not, on its own, mean that a strike has been called.
These are the dates in Unifor’s October 6 announcement, not confirmation that the vote or announcement took place as scheduled. The reviewed updates do not include a direct Stellantis response to that announcement.
