Automotive chips are qualified for a defined vehicle mission profile, not merely tested to see whether they work on a laboratory bench. They can face wider temperature swings, longer service lives, vibration, electrical transients and safety-critical consequences than many consumer devices. As a result, manufacturers commonly use automotive-oriented qualification such as AEC-Q100 for packaged integrated circuits, assign temperature grades, and evaluate stress results against the component’s intended application. A qualified part is evidence from defined tests—not a promise that every chip will last forever or that an entire vehicle system is functionally safe.
What makes automotive semiconductor reliability different?
A phone, television or home appliance may operate in a relatively controlled environment and be replaced after a few years. A vehicle electronic control unit can remain in service for a decade or more while experiencing cold starts, engine-bay heat, repeated thermal cycles, humidity, vibration and fluctuating supply voltage. Some failures are inconvenient; a failure in a braking, steering, powertrain or battery-control function can have safety consequences.

AEC-Q100 and consumer qualification answer different questions
AEC-Q100 is the common reference for packaged automotive integrated circuits. Renesas characterizes it as a failure-mechanism-based stress-test qualification framework and notes that a product’s qualification status is identified in its datasheet. Its AEC-Q100 qualification page also cautions that not every product is intended for automotive use.
In TI’s comparison, automotive Q100 devices are stressed and electrically tested before and after stress at room and hot temperatures according to the device’s grade. The commercial products in that comparison are tested at room temperature after reliability stress. This contrast explains why a commercial part that works in a consumer device is not automatically interchangeable with an automotive-qualified part; it does not mean that every commercial component is unreliable or that all suppliers follow exactly the same readout sequence.
| Comparison point | Automotive-oriented qualification | Commercial or consumer qualification in TI’s comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Primary framework described by TI | AEC-Q100 | JEDEC JESD47 |
| Stress readout | Measurements before and after stress, at room and hot temperatures according to grade | Reliability stress followed by testing at room temperature |
| Application basis | Vehicle mission profile, location and temperature grade | Commercial product requirements |
| What a pass establishes | Evidence that the tested device met defined qualification limits | Evidence that the tested device met its commercial qualification limits |
The table reflects TI’s published comparison; it is not a substitute for the current standard text or an individual supplier’s qualification report.
Temperature grades put the application first
AEC-Q100 temperature grades define the stated operating-temperature range used to classify a device. TI lists the following ranges:

| AEC-Q100 grade | TI-listed operating range | Typical design implication |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 0 | −40 to 150 °C | Locations with the most severe temperature exposure, such as some under-hood positions |
| Grade 1 | −40 to 125 °C | High-temperature automotive locations that do not require Grade 0 |
| Grade 2 | −40 to 105 °C | Moderate-temperature vehicle electronics |
| Grade 3 | −40 to 85 °C | Lower-temperature automotive locations |
These are TI’s stated temperature grades, published on its FAQ page. They are not a complete mission-profile specification, and they should not be confused with every chamber temperature used during testing. A cabin module, a body controller and an engine-bay controller may legitimately require different grades. The correct choice depends on the hottest and coldest conditions at the actual installation point, board design, cooling, electrical loading and the allowed margin to the device limits.
Mission profiles turn vehicle use into a reliability target
A mission profile describes the conditions and functional or environmental loads a component will encounter over its life. It can include operating hours, time spent at different temperatures, power states, voltage ranges, thermal cycles, vibration and other stresses. Qualification uses accelerated stresses so engineers can obtain evidence in a practical period, but the acceleration model must represent the relevant failure physics.
NXP presents reliability qualification as application-area-specific. Its product qualification information gives an example table with a commercial, home and industrial use-life category of 5–10 years and an AEC-Q100 Grade 1 category of 15 years. Those are NXP’s described categories, not a universal promise that every automotive chip lasts 15 years.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInfineon defines reliability as the probability that an item performs its required function under defined use conditions for a specified interval. Its qualification and reliability overview identifies the mission profile and physics of failure—including failure modes and acceleration models—as inputs to qualification and validation. This is why two parts with the same headline temperature rating can still need different evidence when one is powered continuously in a hot engine compartment and the other spends most of its life in a cool, intermittent-use module.

An illustrative life-equivalence calculation
A May 19, 2022 article from Monolithic Power Systems shows why the assumptions matter. In an example based on AEC-Q100 Revision H, an assumed profile represents 12,000 operating hours over 15 years at an average junction temperature of 87 °C. Using the article’s acceleration model, that profile corresponds to 1,393 hours at a 125 °C junction temperature, compared with the 1,000-hour high-temperature operating-life (HTOL) duration used in its example. The figures come from that assumed profile and model; they are not a universal AEC-Q100 pass requirement. The worked example is available in the company’s mission-profile reliability article.
How an automotive qualification program is used
Exact test matrices, sample counts and limits depend on the standard revision, package, technology and supplier. A practical engineering workflow is:
- Define the installation and mission profile. Document the vehicle location, ambient and junction-temperature distribution, operating hours, power states, voltage conditions and environmental loads.
- Select the applicable qualification framework. For a packaged IC, determine whether the exact ordering code is designated AEC-Q100 qualified. For a discrete semiconductor, investigate the analogous AEC-Q101 framework described by Renesas on its AEC-Q101 page.
- Choose the temperature grade and electrical limits. Compare the grade with measured worst-case conditions, not just nominal ambient temperature. Verify the datasheet’s junction, case and supply limits.
- Map likely failure mechanisms to stresses. Qualification and validation should address the failure modes that the package, die, interconnects and operating profile make credible. Acceleration is meaningful only when the stress reproduces the relevant physics.
- Run the defined stresses and electrical readouts. Automotive programs can require measurements before and after stress and at both room and hot conditions, as in TI’s comparison. The exact sequence and acceptance limits must come from the applicable qualification documentation.
- Review evidence for the exact part. Check the qualification summary, revision, package, die revision, temperature grade and any conditions or exclusions. A result for a related family member is not automatically evidence for a different ordering code.
- Relate component evidence to the vehicle safety case. Use the qualification data as one input to system reliability and safety analysis, alongside architecture, diagnostics, redundancy and production controls.
Reliability qualification is not functional-safety certification
AEC-Q100 asks whether a component survives defined reliability stresses and continues to meet specified electrical requirements. Functional safety asks whether the complete system has identified hazards, allocated safety requirements, detected faults and reduced risk to an acceptable level. Those scopes overlap in engineering practice but are not interchangeable.
Renesas’ qualification material and Microchip’s automotive information treat AEC-Q100 qualification and ISO 26262-related development evidence separately. In a March 24, 2025 announcement, Microchip reported AEC-Q100 qualification for its PolarFire SoC FPGAs and separately discussed ISO 26262 ASIL D certification for the Libero SoC Design Suite. The company’s statement concerns that specific product and software toolchain; it does not mean AEC-Q100 itself is ASIL D certification. The announcement is at Microchip’s release.

What an AEC-Q100 pass does—and does not—guarantee
Qualification is statistical and conditional. It demonstrates that sampled devices passed specified stresses under defined conditions. It does not prove zero defects in every unit, eliminate field failures, or guarantee a particular vehicle lifetime under an application that differs from the qualification assumptions.
TI says the AEC Council’s tools and methods aim toward zero defects and describes its own use of design FMEA, process FMEA and statistical process control. That supports a defect-reduction objective, not a claim that a qualification pass establishes zero defects. Production variation, soldering, board design, thermal interfaces, electrical overstress and misuse can still create failures outside the component test evidence.
How to compare two candidate chips for a vehicle
When replacing or selecting a device, compare the evidence in the same order an automotive reliability engineer would:

| Check | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Qualification status | Is the exact part number, package and die revision designated as AEC-Q100 qualified, or is the claim only for a related family? |
| Temperature grade | Does the grade cover measured junction temperatures at the installation location, including cold starts and hot soak? |
| Mission profile | Do operating hours, duty cycle, thermal cycles, voltage and environmental loads match the intended vehicle program? |
| Failure evidence | Which failure mechanisms and accelerated stresses were evaluated, and were electrical parameters checked before and after stress? |
| Documentation | What qualification revision, conditions, sample information and datasheet limits apply to the ordering code? |
| Safety scope | What additional ISO 26262, diagnostic, architectural or supplier-process evidence does the system require? |
Do not infer automotive suitability from a marketing label alone. Renesas explicitly notes that not all products are intended for automotive use, so the datasheet and qualification summary are the controlling documents for a design decision.

Why the same consumer chip may fail as an automotive substitute
A consumer-rated IC may have adequate electrical performance at room temperature yet lack evidence for the vehicle’s full temperature range, long duty cycle or repeated thermal stress. It may also have different change-control commitments, package options or production-monitoring assumptions. Installing it in a vehicle can therefore create an evidence gap even when a prototype appears to work.
The reverse is not a claim that every automotive-qualified device is inherently better for every consumer product. Automotive qualification can add cost, documentation and testing that a short-lived, temperature-controlled product does not need. The appropriate standard is the one that matches the product’s actual mission profile and consequences of failure.
Bottom line for designers and buyers
Automotive chips need different reliability testing because their environment, service life and failure consequences differ from those of many consumer products. Use AEC-Q100—or AEC-Q101 for applicable discrete devices—as a qualification framework, select the temperature grade from the real installation conditions, and validate the mission profile and failure mechanisms for the exact part. Then treat reliability evidence and functional-safety evidence as separate pieces of the vehicle’s engineering case. A qualification mark is valuable evidence, but it is not a blanket guarantee of zero defects, a fixed field lifetime or system-level safety.
