Automakers cut prices for three different reasons: a lower model-year MSRP, a temporary incentive, or a market transaction price that falls after shoppers and dealers negotiate. Those measures are not interchangeable. U.S. data from January and February 2026 shows especially large incentives and selected MSRP reductions for electric vehicles, while SUV results vary by segment. The available figures do not establish a broad hybrid price-cut trend.
“A price cut” can mean three different things
Before judging whether a vehicle became cheaper, identify which price changed. Automakers, dealers and market analysts use different measures.

| Measure | What changed | What a shopper should check |
|---|---|---|
| MSRP reduction | The manufacturer lowers the advertised base price for a model year or trim. | Compare the same model year, trim, drivetrain and standard equipment. A lower sticker can coincide with deleted or changed equipment. |
| Incentive | The manufacturer or dealer offers cash, lease support, special financing or another temporary discount. | Read eligibility, expiration, location, financing requirements and whether the offer is available for cash buyers. |
| Average transaction price (ATP) | An analyst reports what buyers actually paid on average after negotiated prices and incentives. | ATP is a market average, not a guaranteed price for a specific vehicle. It can change with the mix of trims, models and buyers. |
A lower MSRP can remain in effect for a model year, while an incentive may disappear next month. ATP can rise even when some vehicles receive discounts if shoppers buy more expensive trims or larger vehicles.
Are electric cars getting cheaper?
Some are. The clearest evidence in the U.S. announcements reviewed is a set of model-specific MSRP reductions, not a universal cut across every electric vehicle.

Toyota bZ4X: a lower 2025 model-year sticker
Toyota USA said its 2025 bZ4X XLE MSRP was $6,000 below the prior model-year pricing, while the Limited was $5,380 lower. The 2025 XLE with front-wheel drive started at $37,070. Toyota also listed an included dual-voltage charging cable and equipment changes, so a shopper should compare the complete standard-equipment list rather than treating the difference as a pure cash discount.
Hyundai IONIQ 5: repositioning for 2026
Hyundai Motor America reduced 2026 IONIQ 5 MSRPs by $7,600 to $9,800 across the lineup compared with 2025 MSRPs. The 2026 SE started at $35,000 before freight. Hyundai described the move as a response to evolving market dynamics and competitive pressure, and said the repositioning supported increased U.S. production volume. Its listed MSRPs exclude freight, tax, title and license fees; dealer prices can differ.
These examples show manufacturers changing the price position of particular EVs. They do not prove that every EV, every trim or every country is cheaper. Model year, equipment, destination charges and local dealer pricing still determine the amount on a buyer’s contract.

Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive reported the following U.S. estimates. January and February are separate snapshots, so they should not be read as a single month-to-month price series for every segment.
| Measure | January 2026 | February 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| All new vehicles: ATP | $49,191, up 1.9% year over year | $49,353, up 3.4% year over year |
| All new vehicles: average incentives | About $3,200, or 6.5% of ATP; below December’s 7.5% | 6.9% of ATP |
| Compact SUV: ATP | $36,414, down 0.4% year over year | $36,807, up 1.6% year over year |
| Midsize SUV: ATP | Not stated for this snapshot | $50,148, up 3.5% year over year |
| New EV: ATP | $55,715, down 0.6% year over year | $55,300, down 1.4% year over year |
| EV incentives | 12.4% of EV ATP | 14.2% of EV ATP |
The February EV incentive rate was more than twice the 6.9% overall-market rate. That indicates unusually heavy support for EV buyers at that time, but incentives moved from 12.4% in January to 14.2% in February. A buyer should verify the current offer instead of assuming a reported monthly average still applies.
Why manufacturers lower an MSRP or add an incentive
Competition and market positioning
Hyundai explicitly linked the IONIQ 5 reductions to changing market dynamics and competitive pressure. Lowering a sticker can move a vehicle into a different shopping set, make a trim qualify for a buyer’s budget, or narrow the gap with rival models. That is Hyundai’s stated rationale for its announcement; it is not proof that competition caused every automaker’s decision.
Demand and affordability
Ford said it was prioritizing affordability and customer demand, concentrating pure-EV development on smaller, more affordable models and expanding hybrid choices. The company said lower-than-expected demand and high costs weakened the business case for selected larger EVs. In that situation, a manufacturer may change product plans, equipment, production volume or incentives rather than hold a high price that limits sales.

Stellantis said it had overestimated the pace of the energy transition and was adjusting its strategy to real-world customer preferences, including continued interest in hybrid and combustion vehicles. Chief Executive Antonio Filosa wrote in the company’s February 6, 2026 announcement: “The charges announced today largely reflect the cost of over-estimating the pace of the energy transition that distanced us from many car buyers’ real-world needs, means and desires.” This explains a broader strategic reset, not a measured retail-price change for a particular model.
Production and cost structure
Hyundai said its IONIQ 5 price repositioning supported increased U.S. production volume. Higher output can alter a vehicle’s cost position, but the announcement does not quantify a per-vehicle cost reduction. Do not assume that a lower MSRP means the manufacturer’s production cost fell by the same amount.
Are SUV prices coming down?
The available U.S. figures do not show a general SUV price cut. SUV results depend on segment and vehicle mix.
Compact SUVs
Compact SUV ATP was $36,414 in January 2026, down 0.4% year over year. In February it was $36,807, up 1.6% year over year. Those figures are different monthly observations; they do not establish a continuous decline or a universal discount on every compact SUV.

Midsize SUVs
Midsize SUV ATP was $50,148 in February 2026, up 3.5% year over year. A midsize SUV generally carries a different size, equipment and pricing mix from a compact SUV, so comparing the two averages as if they were the same product would mislead shoppers.

Why an SUV average can move without a sticker-price change
- Buyers may choose more highly equipped trims or larger engines.
- The mix may shift between compact, midsize and other SUV categories.
- Manufacturers may use incentives on selected vehicles while transaction averages remain stable.
- Model-year changes can add or remove standard equipment.
Use the exact trim and drivetrain you intend to buy, then compare its current dealer quote with the manufacturer’s MSRP and any eligible incentive.

The reviewed evidence does not substantiate a current, hybrid-specific MSRP or transaction-price cut. It is therefore not possible to conclude from these figures that hybrids are cheaper than EVs, or that hybrids are becoming cheaper as a category.
Ford’s comments show why hybrids remain part of some manufacturers’ plans: the company said it was expanding hybrid options while focusing pure-EV work on more affordable vehicles. Stellantis likewise described continued hybrid and combustion demand. Those statements concern product strategy and customer preferences, not a published hybrid price average.
For a real purchase comparison, calculate the price of the exact hybrid and EV trims after destination charges, taxes, fees and eligible incentives. Then consider the powertrain warranty, charging or fueling access, energy costs and the equipment included. Without matching those variables, “hybrid versus EV” comparisons can confuse a lower-priced base trim with a genuinely lower ownership cost.

Why EV incentives can be much larger than the overall average
EV incentives averaged 12.4% of EV ATP in January 2026 and 14.2% in February, compared with 6.5% for all new vehicles in January and 6.9% in February. The gap means EV shoppers were seeing more manufacturer or dealer support relative to the vehicle’s transaction price than the average new-car buyer.
Incentives can rise or fall independently of MSRP. An automaker can leave a $35,000 base price unchanged and add a temporary cash allowance, subsidized lease or financing offer; it can also lower the MSRP while reducing a separate incentive. Ask the dealer to show each component separately on the buyer’s worksheet.
How to compare a “price cut” accurately
- Match model year and trim. Compare the same year, trim, body style, drivetrain and battery or engine configuration. A new model year may have a different equipment list.
- Record the published MSRP. Note whether it includes destination or freight. Hyundai’s cited IONIQ 5 prices exclude freight, tax, title and license fees.
- Separate MSRP from the transaction price. Request the dealer’s selling price before incentives, then list every incentive as a separate line.
- Identify the offer type. Mark whether it is cash, lease support, financing, a trade-in allowance or a conditional incentive. A low lease payment is not the same as a lower cash price.
- Check eligibility. Confirm income, ownership, loyalty, military, college-graduate, financing and trade-in requirements where applicable.
- Check time and geography. Ask when the offer expires and whether it applies in your state or dealer region. Incentives can change between a quote and delivery.
- Compare freight, fees and equipment. Include destination charges, documentation fees, accessories, charging hardware, range-related equipment and warranty coverage.
- Get the final out-the-door figure. Compare tax, title, registration and dealer fees before deciding which vehicle is actually less expensive.
Toyota’s bZ4X announcement, for example, identifies an included dual-voltage charging cable and equipment changes. Hyundai notes that dealer prices may vary. Those details can materially alter the value of two vehicles with similar advertised prices.

Price movement will remain uneven. A manufacturer may lower one EV’s MSRP to improve its position, increase incentives on another model, or keep an SUV’s sticker stable while the market mix changes. Early-2026 ATP figures also show that the overall new-vehicle average rose year over year even as EV ATP declined modestly and EV incentives increased.
The practical lesson is to treat every “price cut” headline as a starting point. Verify whether it describes MSRP, an incentive or ATP; match the vehicle’s model year and equipment; and calculate the complete out-the-door price for your location.
