Why Arjun Maini Ranted Over F2 Team Radio at Paul Ricard

After finishing 13th in the 2018 Paul Ricard F2 sprint, Arjun Maini complained over team radio about power loss. He later said his frustration was aimed at the championship organisers, not his Trident team.

Arjun Maini’s angry-sounding radio message followed the 2018 Formula 2 sprint race at Paul Ricard, where he finished 13th. He later said he was frustrated by recurring power and speed problems, but that his criticism was aimed at the championship organisers—not his Trident team.

What Maini said over the radio

After the sprint at the 2018 French Grand Prix weekend, Maini told his team: “I swear you guys don’t support me at all. I do everything every ****ing session!” He then complained: “You can’t do this to me, mate! I have no ****ing power out of the corner, why doesn’t anybody ****ing believe me?” Sky Sports printed the profanity in censored form. Fox Sports Australia reported an additional line: “I don’t want to race in this championship anymore! F*** this!” (Sky Sports; Fox Sports Australia.)

Coverage described the exchange as an angry or tearful outburst, but those labels are reporters’ framing rather than an objective account of Maini’s state of mind. The substance of the complaint was that he felt the car lacked power leaving corners and that he was not being believed.

Why he was frustrated

Maini said the problem had persisted through the weekend. In Sky Sports’ account, he said the car had lost “almost 7km/h down the straight.” He also described a pipe melting during free practice, being replaced, and melting again in qualifying. He said the car still lacked straight-line speed in the Feature Race and that the issue continued into the sprint. These are Maini’s reported explanations; the cited coverage does not publish telemetry independently verifying the speed deficit or diagnosis.

#1 Best Overall
Rugged Radios H41 Behind-the-Head Racing & Industrial Headset
  • DYNAMIC MICROPHONE: The included adjustable dynamic noise canceling microphone allows for clear transmission to others even in the harshest conditions.
  • ENHANCED HEARING PROTECTION: Boasting a rating of 24 decibels NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) hearing protection makes this headset suitable for use in loud noise environments.
  • LISTEN TO YOUR FAVORITE AUDIO: A built in 3.5 mm jack for audio input allows for usage with various devices, such as a cell phone, race receiver, or scanner.
  • COMPATIBILITY: 5 pin universal radio port built in for compatibility with 2 way radios such as Rugged Radios, Baofeng, Motorola, Kenwood, HYT, TYT, and more

At Paul Ricard, Maini qualified 17th, nearly three tenths slower than teammate Santino Ferrucci. He finished 10th in the Feature Race and 13th in the sprint, more than 59 seconds behind sprint winner Nyck de Vries, according to Sky Sports. Those results provide the race context, but do not by themselves establish why his car was slower.

His target was the championship, not Trident

Maini later clarified that he was not blaming his mechanics. Fox Sports Australia quoted him saying, “What can the team do? They do everything they can”. He argued that the series organisers were overlooking recurring problems with the new-for-2018 cars. In comments to Sky Sports, he said: “They say it’s a one-make championship but it’s not a one-make championship. It’s a joke, what’s going on in this championship right now.” That was Maini’s criticism of the championship, not an established technical finding.

The distinction explains why a complaint addressed over the team radio could sound like an attack on his crew while his later explanation defended them: the radio was the channel he was speaking on, but he said his frustration was with how the series handled the problems.

What the later engine report does—and does not—show

At the following round, at the Red Bull Ring, Motorsport.com reported that Formula 2 replaced Maini’s engine for qualifying after a fault was found with the existing unit in free practice. That later report supports the possibility that he encountered a genuine mechanical problem around this period, but it does not prove that the Paul Ricard complaint had the same cause, confirm the size of the alleged power loss there, or settle responsibility. The reports cited here do not include an official technical ruling or comparative telemetry resolving the Paul Ricard issue. (Motorsport.com.)
