This U.S.-market shortlist instead groups seven strong candidates by what they do best, from three-row family duty to off-road travel and performance driving. Use it to narrow your choices, then confirm local pricing, available trims and equipment, and the exact model year before you buy.
How this shortlist is organized
The seven vehicles below are editorial picks, not a numbered ranking. They span different sizes and powertrains, so the best fit depends on whether you prioritize passenger space, ride comfort, fuel use, off-road ability or engaging handling. Car and Driver says its rankings weigh roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value and driving enjoyment (Car and Driver’s ranking methodology). Its 2025 Editors’ Choice recommendations draw on instrumented testing and editors’ real-world driving observations (Car and Driver Editors’ Choice).
Edmunds names the Mercedes-Benz GLE its best luxury SUV for 2025, based on its own ratings; that is one publisher’s assessment, not a universal verdict (Edmunds’ 2025 luxury SUV picks). The shortlist also includes the Volvo XC90 for its family-use case and specific IIHS award evidence. These choices do not exclude credible alternatives such as the BMW X5 plug-in hybrid, BMW iX, Cadillac Lyriq or other IIHS-awarded models.
Seven luxury SUVs, matched to different needs
BMW X5: the all-rounder
The X5 is a strong starting point if you want a polished cabin, substantial power and composed road manners. Car and Driver rates the 2025 model 9.5/10 and describes its ride as refined and handling as stable. Its review lists five seats, gas and hybrid options, and 19–25 combined mpg (Car and Driver’s 2025 BMW X5 review). The review says the Porsche Cayenne is sportier and the Genesis GV80 rides more plushly, so the X5 is best understood as a balanced choice rather than the class leader in either trait.

Car and Driver displays a $67,750–$92,300 MSRP range for the 2025 X5. That is the publication’s range, not an out-the-door quote; verify trim, destination treatment and local pricing with a dealer. The 2025 model carries over from 2024, with lane-change assist added for 2025; Car and Driver notes that it works with optional Highway Assist.
Mercedes-Benz GLE: the broad-use midsize pick
The GLE is a sensible candidate if you want a midsize luxury SUV with a choice of gas or hybrid powertrains and a blend of refinement, power and poise. Edmunds named it its highest-rated luxury SUV for 2025, a useful signal about that outlet’s assessment rather than a guarantee that it will suit every driver (Edmunds’ 2025 luxury SUV picks).

Audi Q7: three rows with engaging road manners
Consider the Q7 if you want a premium, technology-rich interior and three rows. The trade-off is space: Car and Driver cautions that the third row is tight for adults and cargo room trails some rivals (Car and Driver Editors’ Choice). If you expect to carry adults in the back regularly or need luggage space behind all occupied seats, test that configuration in person before committing.
Genesis GV80: comfort and value appeal
The GV80 stands out for its interior and exterior design and offers a case for luxury without the highest price, according to Car and Driver. It is a good fit to investigate if comfort and perceived value matter more than sportiest-in-class handling. Its third row is available only in limited configurations, and the Car and Driver review does not list a hybridized powertrain (Car and Driver Editors’ Choice).

- 1/24 scale measuring 8.5 x 3 x 3 inches
- Made of Diecast Metal with plastic parts and rubber tires
- Openable front doors and lift gate
- Pre-built model, not a Remote Car, not a building kit
Lexus GX: off-road and towing priorities
The GX is the distinct choice here for shoppers who prioritize off-road capability and towing over road-trip softness or fuel economy. Car and Driver flags a sometimes-choppy ride, weak fuel economy and a third row it considers marginally useful (Car and Driver Editors’ Choice). Those compromises make it less compelling as a default family commuter if comfort and efficiency are your leading concerns.
Porsche Cayenne: performance-led choice
Choose the Cayenne if handling and strong powertrains are high on your list. Car and Driver highlights those strengths, while warning about expensive options and a screen-heavy dashboard. There is no third-row configuration (Car and Driver Editors’ Choice), so it is aimed at buyers who prefer a performance-oriented two-row SUV over maximum passenger capacity.

Volvo XC90: family use with qualified safety recognition
The XC90 is a family-oriented option, and the IIHS lists the 2025–26 XC90 among its Top Safety Pick+ recipients. The 2025–26 XC90 Plug-In Hybrid also appears on the list, but that award applies only to vehicles built after December 2024 (IIHS 2025 midsize luxury SUV awards). Check the specific vehicle’s model year, equipment and build date; an award is not a head-to-head ranking or proof that one SUV is safest overall.
Compare the details that change the buying decision
| Model | Best fit | Space or capability caveat | Powertrain or safety note |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMW X5 | Balanced performance, refinement and technology | Five seats in Car and Driver’s 2025 review | Gas and hybrid options; 19–25 combined mpg as listed by Car and Driver for its reviewed model range |
| Mercedes-Benz GLE | Broad-use midsize luxury | Confirm seating and trim configuration locally | Gas or hybrid choices highlighted by Edmunds |
| Audi Q7 | Three rows and engaging road manners | Third row is tight for adults; cargo space trails some rivals, per Car and Driver | Confirm the specific configuration and equipment |
| Genesis GV80 | Comfort, interior design and value appeal | Third row is limited to some configurations | Car and Driver’s review does not list a hybridized powertrain |
| Lexus GX | Off-road use and towing priorities | Third row is marginally useful; ride can be choppy, per Car and Driver | Car and Driver flags weak fuel economy |
| Porsche Cayenne | Handling and strong powertrains | No third-row configuration | Options can add substantial expense, per Car and Driver |
| Volvo XC90 | Family use and a choice of conventional or plug-in hybrid versions | Check the seating and cargo configuration against your needs | IIHS Top Safety Pick+ listing for 2025–26 XC90; plug-in award limited to vehicles built after December 2024 |
How to choose between them
Start with seats in use, not the advertised seat count
If you need three rows, test the third row with the people who will use it and bring the luggage or child seats you routinely carry. The Q7’s third row is tight for adults, the GV80’s is limited to certain configurations, and the GX’s is described as marginally useful. Also check how much cargo room remains with the rear seats occupied; a third row that fits passengers may leave too little space for their bags.

Match the powertrain to your routine
Compare gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric versions only after estimating your typical daily distance and whether you can charge at home. The X5 and GLE have gas and hybrid choices in the cited reviews; the XC90 has a plug-in hybrid variant. The shortlist does not establish a comparable efficiency or ownership-cost total across all seven, so check the exact version’s official specifications and calculate fuel or charging costs for your use.
Choose the ride and driving character you actually want
A sporty SUV is not automatically the best SUV. The Cayenne emphasizes handling, the X5 balances refinement and stable handling, and the GV80 leans toward a plush ride. Drive candidates on the roads you use most, paying attention to seat comfort, visibility, cabin noise, ride over rough pavement and controls you will operate every day.
Compare total cost and equipment by exact trim
The available sources do not establish comparable ownership-cost totals for these models. Before deciding, request local quotes and check which driver-assistance, comfort and convenience features are standard versus optional on the exact trim. Include insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance, warranty coverage and any equipment package you need; do not treat a published MSRP range as a dealer quote.
What the safety awards do—and do not—tell you
IIHS lists Top Safety Pick+ awards for the 2025–26 Volvo XC90 and XC90 Plug-In Hybrid, with the plug-in award restricted to vehicles built after December 2024. Its 2025 midsize luxury SUV listings also include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70 and GV80, and Mercedes-Benz GLC and GLE; the GLE listing specifies optional pedestrian front crash prevention. Some entries have production-date qualifications, so check the individual listing and the vehicle’s build date before applying an award to a particular SUV (IIHS 2025 midsize luxury SUV awards). These are award listings, not a head-to-head crash-test ranking.

- Choose your non-negotiable use case. Decide whether you need two or three rows, regular adult seating in the third row, towing, off-road travel, home charging or performance-focused handling.
- Compare exact model years and trims. Features and powertrain availability can differ by year and configuration. For example, Car and Driver says the 2025 X5 carries over from 2024 and adds lane-change assist, which works with optional Highway Assist.
- Verify the vehicle’s safety listing. Match the IIHS award to the model year, build date and required or optional equipment of the SUV you are considering.
- Get local, itemized quotes. Confirm current inventory, destination charges, options and dealer pricing in your area; prices can vary by market and vehicle configuration.
- Test the real family setup. Bring passengers, child seats and representative luggage to check access, comfort and cargo capacity with the seats you will use.
Edmunds says its estimates for lightly used or unsold 2025 SUVs are based on ZIP code 90404 and change with local market conditions. They should not be treated as national price quotes; check current local listings for your area (Edmunds’ 2025 luxury SUV picks).
