Automakers are giving smaller, lower-priced vehicles more attention because shoppers are under pressure from the full cost of buying and owning a car—not just its sticker price. But this is a qualified shift, not a universal return to bargain-basement cars: GM points to current U.S. models below a $30,000 starting-MSRP threshold, while Volkswagen has announced future small-EV plans for Europe.
What counts as an affordable car?
“Affordable” can describe very different things. A vehicle with a starting MSRP below $30,000 is not necessarily a car with an average selling price below $20,000, a low monthly payment, or low lifetime ownership costs. Starting MSRP is a manufacturer’s entry price; average MSRP reflects what buyers are paying for vehicles in a category; neither alone captures insurance, financing, maintenance, or other ownership expenses.
The distinction matters in the U.S. market. In a March 2026 report using January data, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation said there was no new vehicle with an average MSRP below $20,000. It relayed a Kelley Blue Book figure of $22,315 for the Nissan Versa’s average MSRP and said reports indicated Versa production ended in December. Those are dated average-price and production details, not a current starting-price list for every vehicle.
Why affordability is back on automakers’ agendas
Ownership costs are squeezing shoppers
The window sticker is only one part of the budget. CarGurus’ 2025 market recap identified rising insurance, loan-payment, and maintenance costs as pressures on buyers, alongside relatively stable average list prices. It reported that total cost of ownership in 2025 was 36% higher for used vehicles and 29% higher for new vehicles than in 2019. These are CarGurus comparisons, not a promise that every owner’s costs rose by those amounts.

CarGurus’ Director of Economic and Market Intelligence, Kevin Roberts, summarized the change in behavior this way: “If 2024 was defined by declining affordability, 2025 was the year consumers actively pursued it, shaping both shopping behavior and automotive supply trends.” That points to a commercial reason for automakers to offer less expensive choices: buyers are actively seeking value.
Demand has shown up in smaller segments
Historical sales data offer supporting context, though they do not prove why any one buyer chose a smaller vehicle. Axios, citing Cox Automotive, reported that U.S. subcompact crossover utility sales rose more than 20% in the first half of 2024 compared with the year-earlier period. Compact-car sales rose 18%, and compact-SUV sales rose 12%, while overall vehicle sales were nearly flat. Those figures describe that six-month period, not current growth rates.

Smaller vehicles can provide a lower entry price, but the return is not necessarily to bare-bones cars. Cars.com senior director of industry data and insights Rebecca Lindland told Axios: “You don’t really have these stripped-down vehicles anymore.” The point is relevant to today’s value proposition: shoppers may be looking for an attainable price without giving up the safety and convenience equipment they expect.

The examples below are not direct price comparisons: they span two markets, different powertrains, and different stages of availability.

GM’s U.S. lineup and the Bolt
GM said Chevrolet and Buick sold nearly 700,000 vehicles with starting MSRPs below $30,000 in 2025. That is a company-reported U.S. sales figure using a starting-MSRP cutoff; it does not mean those vehicles all sold for less than $30,000 after options or at transaction.
GM’s July 2026 overview lists the Trax among its Chevrolet and Buick models below that starting-price threshold. The Trax is a current crossover, while the Bolt is a separate announced return. On the earlier Bolt, Scott Bell, vice president of Global Chevrolet, said: “The Chevrolet Bolt was the industry’s first affordable mass-market, long-range EV and it commanded one of GM’s most loyal customer bases thanks to its price, versatility and practicality.” Announcing the return, he said: “After production ended, we heard our customer’s feedback and their love for this product. So the Bolt is coming back—by popular demand and better than ever—for a limited time.” The statements explain GM’s positioning and the company’s plan; they do not establish how widely the new model will be available or how buyers will respond.

Volkswagen’s European small-EV plans
Volkswagen has described two future small electric cars for Europe, with target prices in euros. The company’s 2024 announcement gave a planned base price below €25,000 for the ID.2all production version and said it was expected at dealerships in 2026. It separately described an entry-level model around €20,000, with a production-model premiere scheduled for 2027. Volkswagen’s 2025 newsroom page also referred to several small EVs planned from 2026.
These are company plans and target prices, not evidence that the vehicles were already on sale when announced or that the targets will be their final prices. Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer framed the ambition as: “An affordable, high-quality, and profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe – that’s the Champions League of automotive engineering!” The goal also highlights the manufacturer’s challenge: to make a lower-priced EV while keeping it profitable.

Why the announcements are not a universal return to cheap cars
The evidence points to different responses rather than one industry-wide strategy. GM’s cited examples include current U.S. vehicles with combustion engines and a limited-run electric model announcement. Volkswagen’s examples are plans for future electric models in Europe. Their prices use different currencies and measures, and their availability stages differ. A U.S. starting MSRP cannot be directly compared with a European target base price as though they describe equivalent vehicles or costs.
Nor does a lower sticker price automatically mean lower total cost of ownership. CarGurus’ figures show why insurance, loan payments, and maintenance belong in the affordability discussion. The available figures do not establish like-for-like lifetime costs for the Trax, Bolt, or Volkswagen’s planned EVs, so they cannot show which is cheapest to own.

What buyers should check when comparing an “affordable” car
- Confirm the price type. Separate starting MSRP from average MSRP, a planned base-price target, an advertised price, and the final transaction price.
- Check availability and model year. A current vehicle, an announced limited-run model, and a future production plan are not interchangeable.
- Estimate the full budget. Include financing, insurance, and expected maintenance rather than judging affordability by the window sticker alone.
- Compare like with like. Match the market, currency, powertrain, body style, and equipment before treating two prices as meaningful alternatives.
