An F1 car can corner quickly because its wings and underbody generate downforce, pressing the tyres onto the track and helping them produce grip. The same aerodynamic setup also creates drag, which resists forward motion and can limit acceleration and top speed on a straight. Teams tune the balance for each circuit; in 2026, active wing elements can also switch between corner and straight modes.
Why downforce helps in corners—and costs speed on straights
At speed, airflow over and under an F1 car generates downforce: an aerodynamic force that pushes the car towards the track. That extra load helps the tyres maintain grip, allowing the car to sustain more lateral force through a corner. Formula 1 explains the relationship between downforce, drag and circuit-specific aerodynamic efficiency in its Silverstone technical discussion.

The trade-off is drag. Wings and other bodywork that shape airflow to create useful downforce also resist the car’s forward movement. In a corner, the grip can be worth that cost. On a straight, extra cornering grip is less useful, while drag continues to slow acceleration and restrict how quickly the car gains speed.
A lower-drag setup can help a car accelerate and reach a higher speed, but it may provide less aerodynamic grip for the next turn. The fastest overall choice is not necessarily the one with the most downforce or the least drag: it is the balance that saves the most time across the circuit.

Why a quick cornering car may not be slow everywhere else
“Fast in corners” and “slow on the straights” describe relative strengths, not fixed, mutually exclusive traits. The result depends on the circuit’s mix of corners and straights, the car’s aerodynamic efficiency, its power and energy deployment, and the car it is being compared with.
Maximum downforce is not the only route to speed through a corner. Formula 1’s Silverstone discussion notes that a lower-drag car may arrive at a fast corner at higher speed and still have enough downforce to take it flat. That is why aerodynamic efficiency—the useful downforce produced for the drag incurred—can matter as much as maximum downforce at a particular track.

Why a speed-trap number does not prove an engine weakness
A speed-trap reading is one observation at one point on a straight, not a complete measure of a car’s power-unit performance. Drag, wing configuration, electrical-energy deployment, acceleration, a tow from another car and the exact measurement point can all affect the number. Without race-specific telemetry, a single comparison cannot establish how much of a speed gap comes from any one of those causes.

What changes under the 2026 aerodynamic rules
For 2026, Formula 1 describes active elements on both the front and rear wings, with two aerodynamic modes. In Corner Mode, the wings remain in their normal, higher-downforce position. In Straight Mode, the elements adjust to reduce drag and help the car accelerate towards top speed. Formula 1 outlines the system in its 2026 aerodynamics explainer.
This is not simply the former DRS carried over unchanged. Formula 1 says the active-aero system replaces DRS in its current form; low-drag mode can be used on designated straights without the former requirement that a driver be within one second of a car ahead. The FIA also links drag reduction to the 2026 power units’ greater reliance on electrical energy, making energy management part of the reason straight-line efficiency matters. - Even if you’re new to F1, the racing intent is easy to feel. The livery stickers and printed slick tires echo the look of a real car waiting on the grid, tense and purposeful.
- Rotate the gear on top and the front wheels turn with it, along with the steering wheel inside. It’s a small interaction, but it helps you understand how steering shapes every move on track.
- A lever inside the cockpit lets you open and close the flap on the car's rear wing. It’s a simple way to experience what DRS means, and a nod to the DRS era.
- Lift the rear cover to see a V6 engine built with metallic painted parts. Push the car forward and the pistons move, showing how motion runs through the car.
- Whether you follow F1 closely or just appreciate race car design, this is the kind of model you clear space for. It belongs in a racing collection, or as a gift for someone who feels the same pull.
When the 2026 regulations were announced, Formula 1 reported headline targets of 30% lower downforce and 55% lower drag for the new regulations. These are announced regulation-level reductions, not measurements that apply equally to every car or circuit. The FIA’s technical director Nikolas Tombazis cautioned that preliminary downforce estimates were not exact and could be affected by teams’ simulations and development; his remarks appear in the 2024 FIA press conference transcript.
