Stopping distance depends on the vehicle and the surface as well as the braking system. ABS manages wheel lockup; it does not make every road surface behave the same way or promise a shorter stop under every condition. What the gravel test found—and what it did not
An SAE International test-track evaluation published in 1999 examined nine passenger vehicles. It found that ABS-assisted stops were shorter in most tested maneuvers and on most surfaces, but loose gravel was an exception. It is not a general prediction for every car, tire, gravel road, or ABS system, and it does not show that ABS always increases stopping distance. Stopping distance is only one part of braking performance. If ABS helps keep the wheels from locking, the driver may retain more ability to steer while braking.
