In August 2023, CNBC executive editor Jay Yarow said a Tesla Model X he had totaled in the United States and sold for parts later appeared online in Ukraine. The reporting said someone using the car was listening to music through Yarow’s still-connected Spotify account. But the vehicle’s route, buyer and chain of custody were not confirmed, and the account did not establish that Tesla had been hacked.
What happened to Jay Yarow’s totaled Tesla?
Yarow said he crashed and totaled his Model X in late 2022, then sold it for parts. Months later, notifications from the Tesla app indicated that the vehicle was online in Ukraine. Futurism reported that its apparent user was listening to Drake through Yarow’s Spotify account, which had remained logged in. Futurism’s August 2023 account describes the incident.
Yarow’s reaction was also reproduced by Gagadget as: “I had a Tesla, crashed it, it was totaled. And now it’s … in Ukraine? And someone there is listening to Drake on my, still logged in, Spotify account.” That is wording attributed to his social post by the secondary report, not independent confirmation of the car’s journey. Gagadget’s retelling preserves the quote.
Was the Tesla actually shipped to Ukraine?
Futurism reported that neither the junkyard nor the auction site confirmed that Yarow’s specific Model X had been sold to someone in Europe or Ukraine. The notifications and reported Spotify activity point to a vehicle associated with his account being online there; they do not establish its precise route, buyer, repair history, or the condition and identity of its original components.

There is historical context for salvage vehicles moving from the United States to Ukraine, but it cannot fill in this car’s missing provenance. CARFAX Europe reported that 535,540 of 594,582 US imports to Ukraine during 2011–2021 had salvage titles—90.1% of the imports in that dataset. The figure is limited to that period and does not describe today’s import mix or prove how Yarow’s vehicle got there. CARFAX also notes that salvage-title rules differ among US states, and that some such vehicles are repaired while others are dismantled for parts. Former General Motors executive Mike Dunne, who runs ZoZoGo, described the broader pattern to Futurism: “Cars go to the repair shop or junkyard,” and “then find their way to a second market and then are suddenly being shipped overseas.” That explains how a salvage vehicle could enter a second market; it does not verify this Tesla’s route.

Does a car being totaled remove its accounts?
No. A totaled designation or sale for parts does not, by itself, show that connected accounts or third-party service sessions have been removed. In Yarow’s reported case, Spotify was still logged in. Ken Tindell, identified by KNEWS/Kathimerini as CTO of automotive security firm Canis Labs, said in that secondary report: “The credentials to internet services are clearly left in the vehicle electronics and then can be used by whoever gets hold of the electronics.” The comment describes a possible risk; it does not establish that every salvaged car retains credentials or that Yarow’s Tesla was hacked. KNEWS/Kathimerini’s August 11, 2023 report attributes the quote to Tindell and CNBC.
Removing a car from a manufacturer account and signing out of third-party services are separate matters. Tesla’s current support instructions cover account access and vehicle transfer; they do not promise a remote wipe of all data stored in the physical car or removal of every third-party login.

How to remove or transfer a Tesla you no longer own
Tesla’s current support page says a previous owner can remove a vehicle through the Tesla app. To transfer it, Tesla says the new owner receives app access and the previous owner loses vehicle information and access. Follow the current instructions for your ownership situation:
- Open the Tesla app and go to My Products.
- Select the vehicle, then choose Remove or Transfer Ownership.
- Follow the prompts to remove or transfer the vehicle.
Tesla warns that removing a vehicle cancels paid subscriptions. Benefits associated with the account may also stop and cannot be restored. Review Tesla’s current vehicle-removal instructions and the consequences before proceeding, particularly if your ownership or subscription situation is unusual.

What to do about third-party accounts
Account removal from the Tesla app is not a substitute for checking services used in the car. For each connected service you used, review its account settings and sign out of devices or sessions you no longer control; where available, change the password or revoke access. If the vehicle is in your possession, use the service’s own logout controls in the car as well. The Tesla support guidance cited above does not state that removing the car from your account logs you out of Spotify or other third-party services.
Yarow’s case is a reminder to treat a salvage or parts sale as an account-security transition, not proof that every digital connection ended with the vehicle’s title or physical disposal.
