The 2025 Toyota GR Corolla is a particularly compelling model year if you want a choice between a six-speed manual and a new eight-speed automatic, plus more torque and revised hardware. It is not objectively the “best” year for every buyer, but Toyota’s updates make the 2025 lineup broader and give buyers a new way into the hot hatch.
What changed on the 2025 GR Corolla?
Toyota’s September 2024 announcement introduced several changes for the 2025 model year: an available automatic transmission, higher stated torque, a suspension retune, revised front-end cooling and aerodynamic hardware, and a new Premium Plus grade. These are manufacturer specifications and descriptions, not independent performance-test results. Toyota’s 2025 GR Corolla announcement details the changes.
A new eight-speed automatic joins the manual
The 2025 GR Corolla is available with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed GAZOO Racing Direct Automatic Transmission (DAT) with paddle shifters. Toyota says it developed the DAT around quick downshifts and driver inputs that anticipate gear selection. That is Toyota’s engineering claim, not a comparison established by independent testing.
DAT models also offer launch control, which Toyota describes as intended for track driving. Drivers who prefer choosing every gear themselves can still select the six-speed manual.

More torque, with the same stated horsepower
Toyota lists the 2025 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder at 300 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque. The company gives 273 lb-ft as the preceding model year’s torque figure, so the 2025 specification represents a stated increase of 22 lb-ft. The figures are Toyota’s published specifications.
Suspension and cooling revisions
Toyota says it retuned the suspension and redesigned the front bumper to make room for cooling components and aerodynamic changes. The sub-radiator is optional on Premium and standard on Premium Plus. A transmission-fluid cooler is standard on models equipped with DAT.

Those equipment distinctions matter most if you are choosing a grade or transmission for repeated hard driving: the extra cooling hardware is not identical across all configurations. Toyota’s announcement does not provide independent evidence of a specific lap-time or durability advantage.
Which 2025 GR Corolla grade makes sense?
The 2025 lineup comprises Core, Premium, and the new Premium Plus. Toyota’s listed equipment makes Premium Plus the most feature-rich choice, while the sub-radiator availability differs between Premium and Premium Plus.

| Grade | Notable details established by Toyota | Cooling equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Core | Entry grade in the 2025 lineup | Toyota’s announcement does not list a sub-radiator for Core |
| Premium | Mid-level grade in the lineup | Sub-radiator optional |
| Premium Plus | Forged-carbon-fiber roof, vented bulge hood, matte-black wheels, and head-up display | Sub-radiator standard |
Toyota specifies front and rear Torsen limited-slip differentials as standard across the lineup. Its three all-wheel-drive modes have distinct front-to-rear torque distributions: Normal is 60:40, Gravel is 50:50, and Track varies from a front-focused 60:40 to a rear-focused 30:70. These are Toyota’s stated mode specifications; the distribution in Track is variable rather than a fixed split.
How to choose between manual and DAT
- Choose the six-speed manual if a clutch pedal and direct control over gear changes are central to what you want from a hot hatch.
- Consider DAT if you want paddle shifters and an automatic option, or value Toyota’s stated emphasis on quick downshifts and anticipatory gear selection.
- For track use, compare the complete configuration. DAT models include a transmission-fluid cooler, while the sub-radiator is optional on Premium and standard on Premium Plus. Toyota says launch control is intended for track driving, but does not publish independent performance comparisons in its announcement.
What does the 2025 GR Corolla cost?
Toyota’s September 2024 launch announcement listed a starting MSRP of $38,860, excluding a $1,135 dealer processing and handling fee, and said prices were subject to change. That is a historical launch figure—not a current asking price or a guide to today’s transaction values. Confirm current pricing and availability with a Toyota dealer.

The same announcement offered buyers a complimentary one-year NASA membership, including one free High Performance Driving Event and discounted admission to NASA-sanctioned events. Restrictions applied, and the membership period was tied to one year from purchase. Check the applicable terms rather than assuming the offer is available on a vehicle bought now.
Factory tire size and replacement fitment
Toyota lists Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires in 235/40R18 across all 2025 grades. If replacing a tire, confirm the exact fitment, load and speed ratings, and vehicle requirements before ordering; the factory size alone does not establish that every listing is appropriate for your car. Toyota’s 2025 GR Corolla model page provides the vehicle reference.

It is a strong choice for buyers who want the option of an automatic alongside the manual, the torque figure Toyota raised for 2025, or the added equipment and cooling hardware of Premium Plus. If you specifically want a manual, the new DAT may matter less; if you are shopping by price or comparing later model years, Toyota’s launch announcement alone cannot establish which year is the best value. The fairest case for 2025 is that it expands the GR Corolla’s appeal without removing the manual option.
