Dodge discontinued the Grand Caravan in 2020, but it has not publicly given one definitive reason. The clearest context is a minivan-lineup transition: Chrysler had introduced the newer Pacifica and added the value-focused Voyager, while the Grand Caravan continued on an older vehicle architecture. Industry reporting suggested that maintaining two generations of minivan architecture could add cost and complexity; that was an analyst’s inference, not an official explanation from Dodge or FCA.
What Dodge has confirmed
Dodge’s model history says the Caravan debuted in 1984, the Grand Caravan followed in 1987, and the Grand Caravan was discontinued in 2020. Dodge now says it no longer produces a minivan. The company’s public information confirms the timing and the end of the Dodge minivan, but does not identify a single cause for the decision. Dodge’s model history and its current brand information establish those points.
Why ending the model made business sense
Chrysler had newer minivans in the lineup
In 2019, FCA marketed the Grand Caravan alongside the Chrysler Pacifica, Pacifica Hybrid, and Voyager. FCA described Voyager as a value-oriented choice for families and fleet customers. The Grand Caravan’s departure therefore happened as the company already had Chrysler-branded minivans serving both newer-product and value-conscious roles. FCA’s lineup and positioning are described in its 2019 minivan announcement.
The change was a discontinuation of Dodge’s minivan, not the end of the company’s minivan business. Dodge’s own brand page says it no longer offers a minivan; it identifies the Durango as its closest current vehicle for family passenger use, but the Durango is an SUV, not a direct minivan replacement.

Two different vehicle architectures were being built at Windsor
In 2019, WardsAuto reported that the Grand Caravan and Pacifica were both built at Windsor, Ontario, but used different architecture generations: the Pacifica used newer architecture while the Grand Caravan continued on an older one. The outlet suggested that the Grand Caravan’s sales may have justified the added cost and complexity of running both architectures, while also reporting that FCA planned to drop one of the plant’s three shifts. That cost-and-complexity rationale is plausible context for consolidating the lineup, not a reason FCA officially announced. WardsAuto’s April 2019 report is the contemporaneous account.
What the sales figures do—and do not—show
Historical figures indicate the Grand Caravan remained a significant product shortly before its discontinuation, rather than documenting an obvious sales collapse. WardsAuto reported 151,927 U.S. sales in 2018, up 21% from the prior year, followed by 35,440 in the first quarter of 2019, down 29% year over year. These dated figures provide context, but they do not reveal the company’s decision-making or prove why the model ended.

FCA said in 2019 that its minivans had passed 15 million cumulative sales since 1983 and represented 54% of the U.S. minivan segment at that time. Those are company-reported historical figures, not current sales or market share. WardsAuto also cited a Wards Intelligence estimate that the minivan category peaked above 1.2 million sales in 2000; that broader category history does not by itself explain the Grand Caravan’s discontinuation.
Was COVID-19 the reason?
No evidence in the public filing establishes that. FCA’s 2020 filing said North American shipments were affected by COVID-19 production and market conditions, and that lower Dodge volumes were primarily due to the Grand Caravan’s discontinuation. It records the effect of a decision already made; it does not say the pandemic caused that decision. FCA’s 2020 filing should not be read as an explanation of the discontinuation’s motive.

What replaced the Grand Caravan?
There was no new Dodge minivan replacement. In the broader FCA lineup, Chrysler’s Pacifica and value-positioned Voyager continued the minivan offering, while Dodge exited the category. The Durango is the closest current Dodge option for families needing passenger space, according to Dodge, but it is a different type of vehicle and should not be treated as equivalent to a minivan.
