Whether a particular bike is worth buying depends on its condition, service history, fit for you and local parts support—not on a model-wide reliability claim or a 2025 price that the available sources do not establish.
This is the 1,200-class Super Ténéré, not the Ténéré 700. The year in this article’s title describes the buying context; it does not establish that Yamaha offered a new XT1200Z in every market in 2025.
What makes the Super Ténéré appealing?
Yamaha’s 2010 European launch specification lists a 1,199 cc parallel twin producing 80.9 kW (110 PS) at 7,250 rpm and 114.1 Nm at 6,000 rpm. It also specifies a six-speed transmission and shaft final drive. These are manufacturer figures for that launch specification, not independent performance results or a claim that every later market version is identical. Yamaha’s 2010 launch announcement provides the original specification.
The shaft drive is a practical part of the touring proposition: unlike a chain, it does not require routine chain cleaning, lubrication and adjustment. That does not make the motorcycle maintenance-free; the bike still needs its scheduled servicing and inspection.

Yamaha’s owner manual and 2017 XT1200ZE factsheet support treating the bike as a substantial, full-size adventure-tourer. The exact weight, dimensions, equipment and suspension depend on model year and version, so use the relevant year’s manual or factsheet rather than assuming one specification applies to all XT1200Z and XT1200ZE motorcycles. Does the 2025 label mean it was a new model?
Not necessarily. Yamaha’s official U.S. 2025 page is for the separate Ténéré 700, a 689 cc model with a listed starting MSRP of $10,999. Neither its specifications nor its price apply to the 1,199 cc Super Ténéré. The available official material does not establish XT1200Z new-bike availability in every market for 2025; check the current Yamaha listing or a local dealer for your country. What to check before buying a used XT1200Z or XT1200ZE
Make the decision about the specific motorcycle, not a generalized reputation. The available sources do not establish a quantified reliability advantage, a reliability-rate study or a verified model-wide defect pattern.

- Confirm the exact version and year. Check the motorcycle’s documents and identification, then consult the matching year’s Yamaha manual or factsheet for its equipment and specifications.
- Ask for service records. Look for a coherent maintenance history and supporting invoices or dealer records. If records are incomplete, account for the uncertainty when deciding whether to proceed.
- Inspect condition and signs of damage. Check for visible wear, leaks, corrosion, crash damage and poorly fitted modifications. If you cannot assess the bike confidently, arrange an independent inspection before purchase.
- Check for model-specific service actions. Ask a Yamaha dealer to verify applicable recalls or service actions using the motorcycle’s identifying details. Do not assume a general online claim applies to every year or bike.
- Assess the fit and intended use. Sit on the motorcycle and consider its size and low-speed handling for you. Think about passenger comfort, wind protection and luggage needs, and whether your riding is mainly road touring or includes rough trails.
- Check local support and the full setup cost. Confirm that parts and servicing are practical where you live, and include any luggage or other setup you need in your budget.
Who is it a good fit for?
The Super Ténéré is most compelling for a buyer seeking a large adventure-tourer for road miles and valuing shaft final drive. Its size and touring orientation may be less suitable if you want a lighter-feeling motorcycle for frequent technical trail riding or are not comfortable managing a substantial bike at low speeds. Those are rider-and-use considerations, not a controlled comparison with rival models.
Before choosing among large adventure-tourers, compare shaft versus chain upkeep, comfort for rider and passenger, loaded weight, electronic-aid adjustability, road-versus-trail priorities, service history, parts support and total purchase-and-setup cost. No controlled comparison against competitors is established by the specifications cited here, so they do not support ranking the Super Ténéré above another model.
