He changed motorsport less by winning titles than by making precise car control understandable and exciting to people who had never followed rally. His competition record is real, but the published sources on his career do not establish that he alone raised participation or viewership in the sport.
A career that started outside the car
Block did not come to motorsport through a racing ladder. The FIA’s 2023 tribute says he first pursued architecture, then followed his interest in adventure sports into selling clothing to snowboard shops, and eventually co-founded DC Shoes. Those commercial roots matter later, because the marketing skills he built in apparel were the same ones he applied to sponsorship and video.

A genuine competition record
Block was an active international competitor, and the FIA is the strongest source for those results. Before treating his career as mainly a media story, note what the record shows:
#1 Best Overall
- WRC 8: FIA World Rally Championship (PS4)
- Completely Overhauled Career Mode: Authentic activity management between rallies lets you improve your car and manage your staff for the greatest edge on the track
- Competitive Multiplayer: Weekly challenges and eSports WRC are back and the competition is more intense than ever
- Tons of Content: 50 teams, 14 rallies and more than 100 special stages from the 2019 season. Rise to the challenge
- New Dynamic Weather System: Rain, snow, and hailstorms now affect your drive like never before. Customize your car's tires, stocks, and more for the greatest advantage over your opponents
- 25 World Rally Championship appearances, with a career-best seventh place on his debut at Rally México in 2007.
- A winner in the FIA European Rallycross Championship.
- A podium finisher in the FIA World Rallycross Championship.
- Rally America Rookie of the Year in his first season, according to the Hoonigan Racing biography.
None of these results made him a championship contender in the WRC, and his name is better known outside rally results than inside them. That gap is the core of his influence.
How he changed motorsport
Four separate developments explain his impact. They overlap, but each can be assessed on its own terms.
He turned driving skill into shareable entertainment
Gymkhana put drifting, tight car control, jumps and precision maneuvers into short, highly visual films. The FIA says the videos made him an internet sensation and built a global fanbase. NASCAR describes the series as blurring motorsports and action sports. The format placed the car and the driver at the center of a cinematic story, so a viewer did not need to understand a championship table before finding the footage compelling.

He brought rally imagery to new audiences in the United States
Hoonigan Racing’s team biography credits Block with helping shed light on rally in the United States. The defensible reading is that his work raised the sport’s visibility and gave newcomers an accessible way in. It does not show that he transformed rally single-handedly, and no independent source in this body of evidence measures a resulting rise in attendance or fans.
He turned a driver’s identity into a media platform
His background in apparel marketing, his sponsor relationships, his custom cars and his video production reinforced one another. The Henry Ford’s profile points to the value of his marketing experience in securing sponsorships, and Hoonigan’s own account treats the Gymkhana franchise as a central part of its media work. The result was a recognizable motorsport identity that reached automotive, action-sports, apparel and online-video audiences at the same time.
He showed that motorsport storytelling could be built for the internet
Gymkhana was made for online distribution from the start, and its scale is the clearest evidence of that approach. The view totals, however, come from the company and are not independently audited (see the next section).

What the numbers do and do not show
Three figures appear in the published material. Each describes a different scope and date, so they should not be merged:
- More than 650 million YouTube views for the Gymkhana franchise, as reported by Hoonigan at the 2023 Electrikhana Two announcement. This is a cumulative company figure from that date, not a current live total.
- More than 500 million views for the first nine Gymkhana videos and associated edits, as stated in the undated Hoonigan Racing team biography. Its narrower scope explains why it is lower than the later franchise total.
- Results for 25 WRC appearances and a seventh-place best, from the FIA. These are competition results and measure nothing about audiences.
Keep the categories distinct. An online view count is not a race result, and the popularity of a promotional film does not by itself demonstrate growth in rally participation. The sources do not include an independent study that quantifies the effect of Gymkhana on participation, broadcast audiences or revenue, so any claim about the scale of his impact should rest on the qualitative points above.

How peers and his company remembered him
The FIA’s January 3, 2023 tribute quotes Chris Atkinson, a former Subaru WRC driver, calling Block “one of the most intelligent, driven and motivated individuals I have ever met.” It is a personal tribute. Formula 1 reproduced a statement from Hoonigan that said: “Ken was a visionary, a pioneer and an icon. And most importantly, a father and husband.” That is a statement from his own company, not an assessment by an independent motorsport authority.

Death and legacy
Block died in a snowmobile accident in Utah on January 2, 2023, aged 55, according to the FIA and NASCAR. His sporting legacy rests on two things together: a real competition career and a visual approach to motorsport that reached audiences far beyond rally’s usual following. His business legacy includes DC Shoes and the Hoonigan-related work that followed. Hoonigan says the 43 Institute was founded in his memory to create opportunities for driven people who may lack support.
Where to find his work
The Gymkhana films are the most direct way into his influence, and they can be discussed as cultural works in their own right. The sources do not verify current physical-media availability or a streaming arrangement, so check the platform hosting a film before assuming it is available.
For a tangible link to the franchise, a Traxxas radio-controlled car themed on the Gymkhana Fiesta appears in a product manual hosted on a third-party website. That manual confirms the model’s existence but not its current stock, its licensing status or an active retail listing. Confirm those details with the manufacturer or an authorized retailer before buying.
