There is no single nationwide rule that makes a golfer, a ballplayer, or a facility pay when a ball hits a parked or moving car. Responsibility depends on what actually happened, where it happened, and the law of the state where it happened. An ordinary mishit does not establish liability by itself. For most car owners, the practical first move is to document the damage and call their own insurer, because comprehensive coverage may pay for glass and other non-collision damage, subject to the policy’s terms.
What decides whether anyone is liable
Liability turns on whether a specific person or party did something the law treats as a basis for responsibility, not merely on the fact that a ball traveled from a field or course into a car. The questions that usually matter are:
- Conduct: Was the shot intentional, or unusually careless, or was it an ordinary mishit during play?
- Setting: Was the car in a place where a ball could reasonably be expected, such as beside a fairway, a driving range, or a ballfield, or was it on a road or in an unrelated location?
- Notice and history: Did the operator know of a recurring hazard, and what precautions did it take, such as netting, fencing, or warning signs?
- Jurisdiction: Which state’s negligence rules apply, and does a sports-facility statute apply to this kind of activity?
Each of these questions can change the outcome, which is why a general answer can only point you toward the right inquiry.
What the reported decisions do and do not show
Court decisions on balls and property are sometimes cited as if they settle car-damage claims. They do not. Two cases and one statute illustrate the range of issues, and none of them decides this exact scenario.

- When the product is working, the sensor emits ultrasonic waves. When encountering an obstacle, the ultrasonic waves are reflected. The sensor receives the reflected signal and transmits it to the control box. Through calculation, the control box obtains the distance between the vehicle and the obstacle, and reminds the driver to pay attention through the display and sound, etc., to avoid danger. It is a good helper for us to drive the car!
- 1: When reversing, activate the rear 4 sensors and the front 2 sensors to detect and alarm. During normal driving, when braking, the 4 sensors in front of the car are activated to assist the driver to safely pass through narrow passages. When you release the brake, the parking sensor will work for about 15 seconds before stopping.
- 2: The product alerts the driver through sound, numbers, and light bars at the same time.
- 3: Probe behind the car to prevent collision, probe in front of the car to prevent rubbing.
- 4: On the display, there are 8 light bars representing each sensor, allowing the driver to distinguish the orientation of obstacles.
Katleski v. Cazenovia Golf Club (New York, 2025)
The New York Court of Appeals addressed a golfer injured by another golfer’s mishit shot. The court treated that risk as inherent in playing golf under the circumstances presented, and found no evidence that the course design unreasonably increased it. The court stated: “The rule that sports players do not assume risks that have been unreasonably enhanced is well settled in our case law.”
The case concerns a participant in the sport who was physically injured. It does not decide whether a golfer or course is liable for damage to a car, and it does not establish that a nonparticipant, such as a motorist or a vehicle owner, has assumed any risk. Applying its reasoning to car damage would go beyond what the court held.

Neegard v. Valley Golf Association (Minnesota Court of Appeals)
This decision involved repeated golf-ball damage to a home. The court found a genuine issue of fact about whether the repeated damage was abnormal, given how close the home sat to the course. That is a different state and a different kind of property. Its useful lesson is narrow: a pattern of repeated impacts and the physical setting can matter to the analysis.
Sports-facility statutes
Some states have statutes that limit a facility’s liability for injuries from balls or bats. Illinois’s Baseball Facility Liability Act is one example; it limits liability for ball- or bat-related injury to specified circumstances. That statute addresses injuries, applies to baseball facilities in Illinois, and does not govern golf, other states, or vehicle-damage claims. Check whether any such statute exists where your incident occurred before assuming it protects or exposes anyone.

Who could be responsible, and what would have to be shown
| Party | When a claim is plausible | What it depends on | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| The person who hit the ball | The shot was intentional or unusually careless | Evidence of conduct beyond an ordinary mishit; the state’s negligence rules | An ordinary mishit alone is not enough; the New York golf decision concerns injured participants, not car owners |
| A golf course or sports venue operator | A known, recurring hazard existed and reasonable precautions were not taken | What the operator knew, its design and safeguards, and whether a local statute applies | Protections for facilities differ by state and by type of activity; a repeated-damage argument is fact-specific |
| A public or government-owned venue | Same conduct and notice questions as a private venue | Who owns or operates the land; whether the claim must be filed under special procedures | Public-entity claims can carry notice deadlines that differ from ordinary claims; ask a local attorney promptly |
| Your own auto insurer | Your policy includes comprehensive coverage and the damage is a covered non-collision loss | Your policy’s coverage terms, exclusions, deductible, and the insurer’s review | Coverage is decided by the policy, not by who was at fault |
A claim against any other party requires proof of the facts and an application of the local law. The reviewed sources do not establish how each state treats each of these categories for car damage.
How insurance fits in
Comprehensive coverage
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) describes comprehensive coverage as paying for damage to your auto from almost all causes other than collision, including fire, severe weather, vandalism, floods, and theft, and it lists broken glass among those non-collision losses. That is a general consumer description. It is not a coverage decision for a specific ball impact, and it does not say what your deductible will be or whether your policy excludes a particular cause. Read your declarations page and policy form, then ask the insurer directly.

Property-damage liability coverage
The NAIC describes property-damage liability insurance as paying for damage an insured person causes to another person’s property, including through a negligent auto accident. This describes what that coverage is designed to do for the policyholder who causes the damage. It does not show that a ball-striker or a sports facility is liable for your car, or that their policy would respond to this incident.
What to do after a ball hits your car
- Photograph before moving the car or starting repairs. Capture the damage, the vehicle’s position, the surrounding area, and the ball if it is still there.
- Write down the date, time, and place, plus how the ball struck the car, if you know or can reasonably infer it.
- Collect witness names and contact details. Ask for the player’s or facility’s information where it is appropriate to do so, and do not argue about fault at the scene.
- Contact your auto insurer promptly. Ask whether the loss falls under comprehensive coverage, what your deductible is, and what documentation the insurer needs.
- Keep repair estimates, receipts, and written communications with the insurer, the other party, or the venue.
- Consult a local attorney or a consumer assistance resource if someone disputes responsibility, the damage is significant, or the venue is publicly owned and notice deadlines may apply.
If the damage is to the windshield
A small chip may be suitable for a do-it-yourself repair kit, but only if the damage is a small chip and not a crack or damage that affects the driver’s view. Larger cracks or damage that reaches the driver’s line of sight need professional replacement or repair from an auto-glass shop. Whether your insurer pays for either option depends on your policy and its glass terms, so confirm that before choosing a repair method.
