Who Owns Waymo and Where Are Its Cars Made?

Alphabet controls Waymo and remains its majority investor, but outside investors also hold noncontrolling interests. Waymo’s vehicles come from several partner platforms: Jaguar I-PACE base vehicles were made in Austria, while the Zeekr-based Ojai uses a China-made vehicle outfitted with Waymo technology in Arizona.

Alphabet controls Waymo, but Waymo is not best described as a company with no outside owners. Alphabet remains Waymo’s controlling and majority investor, while outside financial investors hold noncontrolling interests after Waymo’s February 2026 financing round. The cars themselves are built through several manufacturing partnerships, so their origins vary by platform.

Alphabet controls Waymo, but Waymo is not best described as a company with no outside owners. Alphabet remains Waymo’s controlling and majority investor. However, Waymo’s February 2026 financing round brought in outside financial investors with noncontrolling interests. The most accurate description is an Alphabet-controlled autonomous-driving company with outside investors.

The manufacturing answer also depends on which Waymo vehicle you mean. Waymo develops the autonomous-driving system and operates the Waymo One robotaxi service, while automakers and manufacturing partners provide the underlying vehicles. Waymo then adds its cameras, lidar and other sensors, computers, wiring, and software through integration operations.

Alphabet’s fiscal-year 2025 Form 10-K describes Waymo as a consolidated variable-interest entity and says Alphabet funded the significant majority of Waymo’s approximately $16 billion February 2026 investment round. Waymo’s own financing announcement also identifies Alphabet as its majority investor while naming outside financial investors.

That produces an important distinction:

  • Alphabet controls Waymo.
  • Alphabet is the majority investor.
  • Outside investors also hold interests in Waymo.
  • Waymo is not simply an unrelated startup, nor should it automatically be described as 100% owned by Google or Alphabet.

In everyday language, people may still call Waymo a Google company because of its history and Alphabet’s control. In precise corporate language, “Alphabet-controlled” is safer than “wholly owned.”

Does Google own Waymo?

Alphabet owns and controls Waymo; Google is Alphabet’s principal operating subsidiary and the company from which Waymo originated. Saying that “Google owns Waymo” is understandable shorthand, but Alphabet is the more accurate parent-company name.

Waymo operates with its own brand, leadership, technology-development organization, vehicle partnerships, and robotaxi service. It is not a conventional Google consumer product such as Google Maps or YouTube. At the same time, Alphabet’s control and financial backing make Waymo part of the broader Alphabet corporate group.

Who makes Waymo’s cars?

Waymo generally does not manufacture a complete passenger vehicle from raw materials. Instead, its vehicles follow a two-stage process:

  1. Base-vehicle production: an automaker or contract manufacturer builds the car or van.
  2. Autonomous-system integration: Waymo and its manufacturing partners install the hardware and software needed for autonomous operation.

The Waymo Driver includes the vehicle’s autonomous-driving computers, sensors, cameras, wiring, software, and related equipment. Therefore, “where Waymo cars are made” can mean either where the original vehicle was built or where it was converted into a Waymo robotaxi. Those locations are not necessarily the same.

Where are Waymo cars made?

Waymo platform Underlying vehicle Base-vehicle manufacturing Waymo integration
Jaguar I-PACE Jaguar I-PACE electric SUV Graz, Austria, at Magna Steyr’s facility for Jaguar Land Rover Waymo-Magna autonomous-vehicle integration operations, including the U.S. facility described by Waymo
Waymo Ojai Zeekr-supplied electric minivan platform China; contemporary reporting identifies Ningbo as the base-vehicle production location Waymo autonomous-system outfitting in Arizona
Earlier Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid platform Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Part of Chrysler’s production chain; the exact location depends on the vehicle and production period Waymo integration operations

The first two rows explain why there is no single country-of-origin answer for every Waymo vehicle. A Jaguar-based Waymo vehicle and a Zeekr-based Waymo vehicle have different underlying manufacturers and production locations.

Where is the Waymo Jaguar I-PACE made?

The underlying Jaguar I-PACE was manufactured by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. Jaguar Land Rover arranged for Magna Steyr to build the electric SUV at its Austrian facility.

Waymo later announced a manufacturing and integration operation with Magna in Metro Phoenix, Arizona. That U.S. operation supports fleet growth and the installation of the Waymo Driver into vehicles.

So the careful answer is:

The Jaguar I-PACE base vehicle was made in Graz, Austria. Waymo’s autonomous-driving hardware and software were integrated through Waymo-Magna operations, including the U.S. facility in the Phoenix area.

It would be misleading to say that Waymo manufactured the entire Jaguar vehicle itself. Jaguar Land Rover and Magna handled the base vehicle; Waymo supplied the autonomous-driving technology and participated in the robotaxi conversion process.

Where is the Waymo Ojai made?

The newer Waymo Ojai uses a Zeekr-supplied electric vehicle platform. The base vehicle is made in China, with reporting identifying Ningbo as the production location for the Zeekr vehicle platform.

After the base vehicles are produced, stripped-down vehicles are sent to Waymo’s Arizona operation. Waymo and Magna add the autonomous-driving equipment and integrate the Waymo Driver there.

In short:

The Ojai’s base vehicle is made in China by Zeekr, while its Waymo robotaxi equipment and software are added in Arizona.

This is a cross-border manufacturing and integration chain, not a conflict between two different answers. China is the answer for the underlying Zeekr vehicle; Arizona is the answer for a major stage of its conversion into a Waymo autonomous vehicle.

What is Waymo’s Arizona factory used for?

In May 2025, Waymo announced a new autonomous-vehicle factory in Metro Phoenix in partnership with Magna. The facility is intended to support U.S. fleet growth and integrate the Waymo Driver into vehicles, initially including the Zeekr RT platform.

Arizona is therefore an important autonomous-vehicle integration and finalization site. The facility can receive partner-built vehicles and equip them for Waymo service.

That does not mean every Waymo vehicle is completely manufactured in Arizona from raw materials. The factory’s role is better understood as the installation and integration of Waymo’s autonomous system into partner vehicle platforms.

What does Waymo actually make?

Waymo’s core products are its autonomous-driving technology and robotaxi service, not conventional cars sold to the public.

Waymo develops the Waymo Driver, the autonomous-driving system that combines sensors, computing hardware, mapping, perception, prediction, planning, and vehicle-control software. It also operates Waymo One, its commercial ride-hailing service using autonomous vehicles in the markets where the service is available.

The physical vehicle is usually a partner platform. Waymo’s contribution is the equipment and software that turns that platform into an autonomous vehicle capable of operating as part of the Waymo One fleet.

Which vehicles has Waymo used?

Waymo’s commercial and testing history includes several vehicle platforms:

  • Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid: Waymo’s first commercial vehicle platform and an important earlier chapter in its robotaxi development.
  • Jaguar I-PACE: an electric SUV platform used in Waymo’s fleet, with base vehicles manufactured by Magna Steyr in Austria.
  • Zeekr-based vehicles, including the Waymo Ojai: newer electric platforms supplied by Zeekr and outfitted with Waymo’s autonomous-driving system in Arizona.

Waymo’s platform strategy lets it concentrate on autonomous-driving technology while working with established vehicle manufacturers and contract-manufacturing partners. It also means the fleet can change over time, so a statement about one Waymo model should not automatically be applied to every vehicle operating under the Waymo brand.

It designs and operates the Waymo Driver, works with vehicle manufacturers and contract manufacturers, and runs the Waymo One robotaxi service. Its vehicles are customized for autonomous operation, but the underlying cars and vans are generally supplied by partners.

This distinction matters because Waymo’s ownership and manufacturing models are different from those of a company such as Ford, Toyota, or General Motors. Those automakers design and manufacture their own branded vehicle lines. Waymo’s main proprietary asset is the autonomous-driving system and the operating service built around it.

What is the simplest accurate answer?

Alphabet controls Waymo and remains its majority investor, although outside investors hold noncontrolling interests after the company’s 2026 financing round.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Waymo vehicles are built through partnerships rather than at one universal Waymo car plant. Jaguar I-PACE base vehicles were made by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. The Zeekr-based Waymo Ojai uses a base vehicle made in China and receives Waymo’s autonomous-driving equipment and software in Arizona. Earlier Waymo vehicles used the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid platform.

The key is to separate where the base vehicle is manufactured from where Waymo integrates its autonomous-driving system.
