Toyota Motor Corporation builds Lexus cars and SUVs. Lexus is Toyota’s global luxury brand, and current Toyota information confirms Lexus production in Japan, Canada, and the United States. The right answer is model-specific: the assembly country can change with the model, model year, powertrain, and destination market.

Who builds Lexus cars?

Toyota Motor Corporation builds Lexus vehicles. Lexus is Toyota’s global luxury brand, not a separate independent automaker. The vehicles are assembled by Toyota-operated manufacturing companies and plants, using Toyota engineering, production systems, suppliers, automation, and human inspection.

Today, Toyota’s published production information confirms Lexus vehicle assembly in Japan, Canada, and the United States. The exact answer depends on the Lexus model, model year, powertrain, and destination market. In other words, not every Lexus is made in Japan—and the country where a Lexus is assembled is not necessarily the country where all of its components originate.

Where are Lexus cars made today?

Country Toyota/Lexus production examples Known plant or operation
Japan Lexus LC, RZ, and LBX are listed among the vehicles produced at Motomachi; Lexus production also continues at Toyota Motor Kyushu’s Miyata facility. Motomachi Plant, Toyota City, Aichi; Miyata, Kyushu
Canada Lexus RX and NX, including electrified variants listed by Toyota Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, Ontario
United States Lexus TX and its electrified variants Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana

Toyota’s global manufacturing facilities information, dated May 8, 2026, is the best current high-level source for these production assignments. It is not a complete VIN-by-VIN production database, so it should not be treated as a universal list for every Lexus configuration sold in every country.

Japan: Lexus’s historic and continuing production center

Japan remains central to Lexus manufacturing. Toyota’s Motomachi Plant in Toyota City, Aichi, currently lists the Lexus LC, Lexus RZ, and Lexus LBX among its products. Motomachi also builds Toyota-branded vehicles, so it is a Toyota production facility rather than an exclusively Lexus-only factory.

Lexus production also continues at the Miyata facility operated by Toyota Motor Kyushu. Lexus describes the Miyata Lexus Plant as employing thousands of workers and a small group of highly skilled Takumi craftsmen. In Lexus production terminology, Takumi workers represent accumulated manufacturing skill and detailed human quality inspection; their role is part of the brand’s Japanese production identity.

Japan is therefore a major Lexus manufacturing base and the brand’s principal historical production center. It is not, however, the source of every new Lexus sold worldwide.

Canada: RX and NX production in Ontario

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada operates Lexus production facilities in Ontario. Toyota’s current North American facilities listing identifies the Canadian operation as producing the Lexus RX and Lexus NX, including hybrid variants.

Canadian Lexus production has a significant place in the brand’s history. In 2003, the Canadian operation became Toyota’s first manufacturing facility outside Japan to be entrusted with Lexus production, beginning with the RX. Toyota later expanded the operation to include the NX and NX Hybrid for the North American market. Toyota’s historical account is available in its release about Lexus production in Canada.

This means that a Lexus RX or NX assembled in Canada is not an unusual or lower-tier version of a Japanese-built Lexus. It is part of Toyota’s established strategy of manufacturing selected Lexus models near their major sales markets, subject to the specifications and production assignments for that vehicle.

United States: the Lexus TX is built in Indiana

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana, often called Toyota Indiana, produces the Lexus TX. Toyota’s current North American facilities table lists the TX and its electrified variants among the plant’s main products.

The TX is especially notable in Lexus manufacturing history: Lexus identifies it as the first Lexus vehicle assembled at Toyota Indiana and the first Lexus SUV built in the United States. Lexus’s official history and production material provide more background in its Lexus TX manufacturing history document.

U.S. assembly reflects the same approach used in Canada: Toyota builds certain Lexus vehicles close to the markets where they are principally sold. It does not mean that every Lexus SUV is American-built, nor does it establish the assembly location of every TX sold in every market.

Why the manufacturing country varies by Lexus model

Lexus uses a global manufacturing network rather than one universal factory. Toyota assigns production according to factors such as:

  • Model: The LC, RZ, LBX, RX, NX, and TX do not necessarily share a plant.
  • Generation and model year: A production assignment can change when a vehicle is redesigned or a plant is retooled.
  • Powertrain: Hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, battery-electric, and gasoline versions may not always have identical production arrangements.
  • Destination market: A Lexus built for North America may come from a different facility than a similar vehicle sold in another region.
  • Production period: Plants and product mixes change over time, so an older vehicle’s assembly location is not proof of where the current version is made.

That is why statements such as “all Lexus cars are Japanese” or “the Lexus RX is made in Canada” are too broad without a model year, configuration, and market qualification.

Who physically assembles a Lexus?

The corporate responsibility belongs to Toyota Motor Corporation, but the day-to-day assembly is performed by teams at individual Toyota manufacturing companies and plants. Examples include:

  • Toyota’s Japanese production operations, including Motomachi and Toyota Motor Kyushu’s Miyata facility;
  • Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Ontario; and
  • Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in the United States.

Assembly combines supplier-made components, Toyota production processes, automated equipment, and human inspection. The precise mix differs by plant and vehicle. Lexus’s Japanese production material places particular emphasis on skilled workers and Takumi craftsmanship, but the presence of a Toyota manufacturing company outside Japan does not make the resulting vehicle any less an official Lexus.

How to find where your specific Lexus was made

If you are researching one particular Lexus, use the vehicle’s own documentation rather than relying on the badge or model name.

  1. Identify the exact vehicle. Record the model, model year, body style, powertrain, and destination market. “RX” by itself may not be specific enough.
  2. Check the vehicle label and documentation. Look for the country-of-origin or final-assembly information on the vehicle label, the window sticker, purchase paperwork, or other manufacturer documentation.
  3. Use the VIN when necessary. Give the complete vehicle identification number to a Lexus dealer or Toyota representative and ask them to confirm the build or final-assembly information.
  4. Ask for model-specific confirmation before buying. If assembly location matters to your purchase, verify the actual vehicle in Lexus dealer inventory rather than assuming every vehicle with the same nameplate came from the same country.

A VIN can identify a particular vehicle, but publicly available decoding tools do not always provide every manufacturing detail or reliably distinguish every market-specific production assignment. Dealer records, the vehicle’s label, and the original window sticker are usually more useful than a broad internet claim about a model.

What “made in” means for a Lexus

“Made in Japan,” “assembled in Canada,” or “built in the United States” generally refers to the vehicle’s final assembly location. It does not mean that every part was manufactured in that country.

Modern vehicles use globally sourced materials and components. Engines, batteries, electronics, seats, glass, tires, and other parts may come through different supplier and manufacturing networks. The final-assembly country is therefore an important fact about a Lexus, but it is not a complete map of the vehicle’s supply chain.

Does Japanese assembly make a Lexus better?

Assembly location alone is not a reliable quality ranking. Toyota uses standardized production methods, quality controls, and supplier systems across its manufacturing network. A Japanese-built Lexus may have a different production history from a Canadian- or U.S.-built Lexus, but the country of assembly by itself does not prove that one vehicle will be more reliable or better finished than another.

For a buying decision, the more useful checks are the specific vehicle’s condition, service history, warranty coverage, recall status, equipment, inspection results, and fit for your intended use. Country of assembly can be relevant for a buyer who has a particular preference, but it should not replace vehicle-level due diligence.

Bottom line

Lexus vehicles are built by Toyota Motor Corporation through Toyota-operated plants and manufacturing companies. Current Toyota information confirms Lexus production in Japan, Canada, and the United States:

  • Japan: examples include the LC, RZ, and LBX at Motomachi, with continuing Lexus production at Toyota Motor Kyushu’s Miyata facility.
  • Canada: the Ontario operation produces the RX and NX, including listed hybrid variants.
  • United States: Toyota Indiana produces the TX and its listed electrified variants.

The accurate answer for any individual Lexus requires the model, model year, powertrain, market, and sometimes the VIN. Use the vehicle label, window sticker, documentation, or dealer confirmation instead of assuming that every Lexus was assembled in Japan—or that every example of one model came from the same plant.
