Who are the “Kia Boyz”? How TikTok fueled an epidemic of car thefts

The “Kia Boyz” label describes a decentralized theft trend—not one national gang—built around vulnerable Hyundai and Kia vehicles without electronic immobilizers. Here’s how social media amplified it, how large the problem became, and what owners can do.

“Kia Boyz” is an informal label for a loose, mostly teenage group of vehicle thieves and social-media participants associated with stealing vulnerable Hyundai and Kia models, joyriding, reckless driving, and posting the results online. It does not describe one formally organized nationwide gang.

The trend became widely known after videos popularized the so-called Kia Challenge and Hyundai Challenge: demonstrations showing that certain key-start vehicles could be stolen without a conventional key. The videos did not create the underlying security flaw, but they made it highly visible, searchable, and easy for others to imitate.

What does “Kia Boyz” mean?

The phrase developed around thefts first strongly associated with Milwaukee and later reported in cities throughout the United States. Police departments, journalists, automakers, and members of the public have used it to describe people participating in or imitating the trend.

It is important not to treat “Kia Boyz” as the name of a single gang with a national command structure. The term covers loosely connected participants in different places. Some stole vehicles for transportation or joyriding; others recorded and shared the activity. The common thread was the selection of certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles whose ignition systems lacked an electronic engine immobilizer.

“Kia Challenge” and “Hyundai Challenge” are related terms for the online trend itself. They refer to videos and posts that exposed the weakness, while “Kia Boyz” generally refers to people involved in the theft and imitation of that behavior.

Which Hyundai and Kia vehicles were targeted?

The main targets were certain 2011–2022 Hyundai and Kia vehicles with conventional turn-key ignitions and no electronic engine immobilizer. That does not mean every vehicle from those brands was vulnerable.

An engine immobilizer checks for an electronically coded key or transponder before allowing the engine to start. Hyundai and Kia installed this protection less consistently than many other automakers during the relevant period. According to the Highway Loss Data Institute, immobilizers were standard on only 26% of Hyundai and Kia vehicle series for the 2015 model year, compared with 96% of vehicle series from other manufacturers.

Vehicles with push-button ignition generally included an immobilizer and were not vulnerable to this particular theft method. However, “push-button” or “key-start” is only a general indicator. The reliable way to determine whether a specific car qualifies for a factory campaign or theft-prevention remedy is to check its vehicle identification number (VIN).

Vehicle characteristic What it generally means
2011–2022 Hyundai or Kia May fall within the affected population, depending on model and equipment
Conventional metal key and turn-key ignition More likely to be among the vehicles targeted by the viral method
Push-button ignition Generally had an electronic immobilizer and was not affected by this specific exploit
VIN campaign eligibility The definitive way to identify the applicable software or hardware remedy

Why were these cars comparatively easy to steal?

The weakness was not that a USB cable possessed some special ability to start a car. That description became popular because a cable could be used during the final part of the commonly publicized method. The more significant issue was the absence of an electronic immobilizer combined with an exposed or vulnerable ignition-cylinder assembly.

At a high level, thieves first damaged or bypassed the ignition hardware and then exploited the vehicle’s starting system. Without an immobilizer verifying a coded key, the vehicle could be started in a way that would not have been possible in a comparably equipped car from another manufacturer.

That distinction matters for owners. Replacing a USB port, changing a key, or relying on the fact that the car still has an alarm does not address the underlying weakness. The appropriate remedy depends on the VIN and may be a software update, a physical ignition-cylinder protector, or another approved anti-theft measure.

How TikTok turned a local weakness into a national trend

The vulnerability existed before the videos went viral. HLDI data shows theft losses for affected Hyundai and Kia vehicles began rising during the COVID-19 pandemic. Social media then acted as an accelerator.

Short videos made the process highly visible and provided a searchable template for imitation. Reposts, recommendations, hashtags, and related clips helped the trend move beyond early hotspots such as Milwaukee. Law-enforcement agencies in cities including Los Angeles and Charlotte publicly connected local increases in Hyundai and Kia thefts partly to the online challenge.

It would be inaccurate to say TikTok alone caused every theft. Vehicle availability, local crime conditions, peer imitation, and the cars’ missing immobilizers all mattered. A more precise description is that TikTok and other platforms exposed and rapidly spread an existing vehicle-security vulnerability.

TikTok’s current Community Guidelines prohibit promoting theft, destroying property, and providing instructions for criminal activity. That policy states the platform’s rule; it does not prove that every harmful video was removed quickly or establish that TikTok single-handedly caused the epidemic.

How large was the theft problem?

The numbers show why the Kia Boyz label became associated with a nationwide problem rather than a handful of isolated incidents.

  • In February 2023, NHTSA said approximately 3.8 million Hyundai vehicles and 4.5 million Kia vehicles were included in the manufacturers’ anti-theft campaign population.
  • NHTSA attributed at least 14 reported crashes and eight deaths to the social-media challenge as of February 14, 2023. Those were the agency’s reported figures at that time, not a final nationwide death count.
  • HLDI found that theft-claim frequency for 2003–2023 Hyundai and Kia models in the second half of 2023 was more than 11 times higher than during the first half of 2020.
  • During July through December 2023, those Hyundai and Kia models had theft-claim frequency more than eight times higher than other brands.
  • In NICB’s 2024 data, the Hyundai Elantra and Sonata ranked first and second among the nation’s most stolen vehicle models. The Kia Optima ranked fifth.

Overall theft has since fallen. NICB reported a 17% decline in U.S. vehicle thefts in 2024 and another 23% decline in 2025. That broad improvement does not mean the Hyundai/Kia issue vanished. HLDI reported that, as of December 2024, eligible 2011–2022 vehicles still had high theft-claim frequencies—nearly 10 claims per 1,000 insured vehicle years for Kia and 11 for Hyundai.

What did Hyundai and Kia do to stop the thefts?

Beginning in February 2023, Hyundai and Kia offered free anti-theft software updates for eligible vehicles. The update changes the alarm and ignition logic so that, when the vehicle is locked appropriately, it will not start through the popularized theft method unless the key is present. It also extends the alarm’s duration from 30 seconds to one minute.

This is a meaningful improvement, but it is not identical to installing a factory immobilizer in every affected vehicle. Some vehicles cannot accept the software update. Depending on the vehicle and campaign, the manufacturer may instead provide hardware protection such as an ignition-cylinder protector, or help with a steering-wheel lock.

Owners should not assume that a vehicle is protected because it received a dealer visit or because a dashboard sticker was supplied. Check the VIN through the appropriate Hyundai or Kia campaign website or contact a dealer, then confirm that the campaign was completed and ask which protection applies.

What owners of potentially affected cars should do

  1. Check the VIN. Use the manufacturer’s campaign lookup rather than relying only on the model year or trim name.
  2. Schedule the remedy. Ask whether the vehicle qualifies for the anti-theft software update, an ignition-cylinder protector, or another hardware solution.
  3. Confirm completion. Keep the repair order and verify that the campaign appears in the vehicle’s service history.
  4. Use ordinary theft precautions. Lock the car, take the key or fob with you, park in a well-lit location, and consider a visible steering-wheel lock if appropriate.
  5. Check insurance requirements. Some insurers have imposed eligibility, documentation, or coverage conditions for affected vehicles. Get the requirements in writing before assuming a policy covers a theft.

HLDI found that vehicles receiving the software upgrade had theft-claim frequencies about 53% lower than comparable non-upgraded vehicles in its initial analysis. A later analysis covering 2023 and 2024 found whole-vehicle theft claim frequency about 52% lower overall for upgraded vehicles, although theft rates fell for both upgraded and non-upgraded cars during 2024.

Claims about the Kia Boyz trend that need correcting

“Every Kia and Hyundai can be stolen this way.”

No. The viral method primarily affected specific key-start vehicles without immobilizers. Push-button-start models generally had immobilizers and were not affected by this particular exploit. A VIN check is more reliable than a blanket statement based on brand.

“The update makes the car impossible to steal.”

No security measure makes a vehicle completely theft-proof. The update is designed to block the widely copied method. It does not prevent every possible form of theft, including towing or other forms of forced entry. NHTSA continues to recommend normal anti-theft precautions.

“The software update installs an immobilizer.”

Usually, no. The update changes vehicle-control and alarm behavior. It does not necessarily add the same immobilizer hardware that newer vehicles had from the factory.

“The Kia Boyz are one nationwide gang.”

There is no good support for that claim. The label describes a decentralized trend and participants in different locations, not a verified national organization with one membership list or chain of command.

What happened with the Hyundai and Kia settlement?

Hyundai and Kia faced nationwide class-action litigation alleging that affected vehicles lacked adequate anti-theft protection. The official settlement website says the court granted final approval on October 1, 2024, but appeals were filed. According to the site’s current update in the supplied settlement materials, the settlement had not yet become effective and payments could not be made while those appeals remained unresolved.

The claim-submission deadline was April 28, 2025. The settlement excludes personal-injury, death, and certain insurer-subrogation claims. Anyone researching a past loss should rely on the official settlement website and its current court notices rather than third-party claim advertisements.

Why the story matters beyond one pair of car brands

The Kia Boyz episode was a case study in how a manufacturing decision can become a public-safety problem when combined with social-media distribution. A security feature that was omitted or inconsistently fitted across a large vehicle population created a weakness. Online videos then reduced the knowledge barrier and gave the weakness a memorable name.

It also demonstrates why the headline description can be misleading. The USB cable was not the root cause, TikTok was not the only cause, and “Kia Boyz” does not identify a single gang. The central facts are more practical: certain vehicles lacked immobilizers, the weakness was widely publicized, thefts and crashes surged, and owners must check their individual VINs to determine whether a manufacturer remedy is available.

FAQ

Who are the Kia Boyz?

“Kia Boyz” is an informal label for loosely connected, mostly teenage thieves and social-media participants associated with stealing vulnerable Hyundai and Kia vehicles, joyriding, reckless driving, and posting the activity online. It is not the verified name of one nationwide gang.

Which cars were affected by the Kia Challenge?

The trend primarily targeted certain 2011–2022 Hyundai and Kia vehicles with conventional turn-key ignitions and no electronic engine immobilizer. Not every Hyundai or Kia was affected. Push-button-start vehicles generally had immobilizers, but owners should use a VIN lookup for a definitive answer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Did a USB cable really start the stolen cars?

That description is incomplete. The commonly publicized method involved first damaging or bypassing vulnerable ignition hardware, with a cable used during part of the process. The underlying security problem was the lack of an electronic immobilizer—not a special feature of USB cables.

Does the Hyundai or Kia anti-theft update make the vehicle completely secure?

No. The update is designed to block the popularized theft method and extend the alarm duration. It is not necessarily a factory immobilizer and cannot prevent every type of theft. Owners should confirm VIN eligibility, complete the applicable remedy, and continue using normal anti-theft precautions.

The Bottom Line

The “Kia Boyz” were not one organized national gang. The term describes a decentralized theft trend built around specific Hyundai and Kia vehicles that lacked electronic immobilizers. TikTok and other platforms amplified the weakness, helping turn a local pattern into a national epidemic. Manufacturer updates and hardware remedies have reduced the risk, but affected-car owners should check their VIN, confirm the repair, and avoid assuming that any one update makes the vehicle theft-proof.
