It combines a twin-turbocharged V6 with an electric motor-generator, a small nickel-metal-hydride battery, and a 10-speed automatic transmission.
These are the important details to understand before buying, towing with, or shopping for a used Tundra Hybrid. The specifications below reflect the fully specified U.S.-market 2026 Tundra. Toyota has announced a 2027 Tundra, but complete 2027 pricing and specifications are not scheduled until fall 2026.

1. It is a conventional parallel hybrid, not a plug-in hybrid
The i-FORCE MAX does not have a charging port. You do not plug it into a wall or public charger. Instead, the system manages engine power and recovered braking energy automatically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe twin-turbo V6, electric motor-generator, and 10-speed automatic transmission are arranged in a parallel-hybrid layout. A clutch between the engine and transmission allows the gasoline engine, electric motor, or both to propel the truck. The motor can also restart the engine and recover energy during deceleration.

That makes the system fundamentally different from a plug-in pickup such as a vehicle designed to cover a substantial daily commute on battery power alone. The Tundra’s battery is there primarily to assist the engine and improve response, not to provide a long electric range.
2. The system produces 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft. of torque
Toyota rates the i-FORCE MAX at 437 net combined horsepower and 583 lb.-ft. of combined torque. Maximum combined torque arrives at 2,400 rpm, while peak combined horsepower is rated at 5,200 rpm.
The word “combined” matters. The 583 lb.-ft. figure is the output of the hybrid powertrain working as a system; it is not the standalone torque rating of the gasoline engine. The electric motor fills in low-rpm response, which is useful when launching the truck, climbing grades, or getting a trailer moving.
The hybrid system therefore offers more than a fuel-saving function. It is also the highest-output Tundra powertrain in the 2026 lineup, although the exact driving experience still depends on cab configuration, drivetrain, tires, payload, and drive mode.
3. The battery is small because this is a power-assist hybrid
The 2026 Tundra i-FORCE MAX uses a sealed 288-volt nickel-metal-hydride battery with 1.87 kWh of capacity. Toyota places it beneath the rear passenger seats.
That is a compact battery by modern plug-in-hybrid standards. It can supply short bursts of electric assistance and store energy recovered through braking, but it cannot support sustained highway driving as an electric vehicle.
In practical terms, the truck may shut the engine off while coasting or during some low-load conditions, use electric power briefly at low speeds, and deploy the motor during acceleration. The engine will restart when the truck needs more power or when the battery’s state of charge and operating conditions require it.

4. Regenerative braking works alongside normal friction brakes
When you slow down, the electric motor can act as a generator. It converts some of the truck’s motion into electrical energy and sends that energy back to the traction battery. This is regenerative braking.
The Tundra still has conventional mechanical brakes. Toyota describes the system as electronically controlled braking with integrated regenerative braking, so the truck blends motor regeneration and friction braking according to speed, battery condition, brake demand, and other factors.
Drivers may notice a different brake-pedal feel from a purely gasoline-powered truck, particularly during light stops. That does not mean the mechanical brakes have disappeared; they remain necessary for stronger deceleration, when the battery cannot accept more charge, and as a backup braking method.
5. Fuel economy improves, but it is still full-size-truck economy
The i-FORCE MAX’s efficiency advantage should be viewed against other full-size pickups, not against compact hybrids. Toyota’s 2026 fleet guide lists these estimates:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

| i-FORCE MAX 4×2 | 20 mpg | 24 mpg | 22 mpg |
| i-FORCE MAX 4×4 | 19 mpg | 22 mpg | 21 mpg |
| TRD Pro | Approximately 18 mpg | Approximately 20 mpg | Approximately 19 mpg |
Actual results can move significantly in either direction. High speeds, winter temperatures, heavy payloads, aggressive tires, steep terrain, and towing all increase fuel consumption. A lightly loaded truck on level roads may do better than the combined estimate, while an off-road model or heavily loaded tow rig may do considerably worse.
Do not buy the i-FORCE MAX expecting Prius-like mileage. Its benefit is a useful combination of stronger output and somewhat better efficiency than an equivalent nonhybrid full-size truck.
6. The 12,000-pound towing figure does not apply to every hybrid
Toyota advertises a maximum Tundra towing capacity of up to 12,000 pounds, but that is a lineup maximum rather than a universal rating for every i-FORCE MAX.

Actual tow capacity depends on the cab, bed length, two- or four-wheel drive, trim, axle and suspension configuration, available equipment, payload, and the specific vehicle’s certification information. A truck’s payload capacity also matters because the trailer’s tongue weight, passengers, cargo, and accessories all count against it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Before buying a trailer or selecting a truck, check:
- The tow rating for the exact VIN or configuration.
- The driver’s-door certification label and stated payload.
- The applicable Toyota towing guide.
- The trailer’s loaded, rather than empty, weight and tongue weight.
Using the headline maximum for a shorter-bed luxury trim or an off-road model can produce an unrealistic and potentially unsafe expectation.
7. i-FORCE MAX is mainly an upper-trim powertrain for 2026
The hybrid is not broadly available across the entire Tundra range. For the 2026 U.S. lineup, Toyota lists i-FORCE MAX versions of the Limited, Platinum, and 1794 Edition. The TRD Pro and Capstone also use the hybrid powertrain.
The SR and SR5 are not listed with i-FORCE MAX in Toyota’s 2026 trim selector. That means shoppers seeking the hybrid generally move into more expensive trims, rather than simply adding the powertrain to the least expensive work-truck configuration.
Availability can also vary by cab, bed, drivetrain, dealer inventory, and option package. Confirm the window sticker and VIN-specific equipment list instead of assuming that every truck with a similar trim badge has the same hybrid system.
8. The high-voltage battery warranty is 10 years or 150,000 miles
Toyota states that hybrid batteries in 2020-and-newer Toyota vehicles are covered for 10 years from the vehicle’s original date of first use or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first.

That coverage applies to the high-voltage hybrid battery, but it should not be confused with a single warranty covering every electrical component in the truck. Toyota lists separate coverage terms for items such as the battery-control module, hybrid-control module, and inverter/converter in its warranty materials.
For a used Tundra Hybrid, verify the original in-service date, mileage, maintenance records, and any warranty history. A battery warranty does not eliminate the need to inspect the truck’s 12-volt system, cooling system, transmission, turbochargers, brakes, and towing-related wear items.
9. Do not treat every Tundra recall as a hybrid recall
Recall headlines can be misleading when they refer to the Tundra model family without clearly separating powertrains and model years.
Toyota’s May 20, 2026 recall concerning possible machining debris and No. 1 main-bearing damage covered certain 2024 nonhybrid Tundras. The announcement specifically identified those affected vehicles as nonhybrid models. That does not make every i-FORCE MAX vehicle part of that particular recall.
Hybrid Tundras can still have recalls of their own. Examples include a multimedia-display recall affecting certain 2022–2025 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid vehicles, and a 2026 load-capacity-label recall involving a small number of 2024–2026 Tundra Hybrids.
The correct way to check a truck is to enter its VIN into Toyota’s recall lookup and the NHTSA recall database. Model-year generalizations are not a substitute for a VIN check, especially when shopping used.

10. A no-start condition may involve the 12-volt battery, not the hybrid battery
The high-voltage traction battery and the ordinary 12-volt battery perform different jobs. A discharged 12-volt battery can prevent the truck from booting the hybrid control systems, even when the high-voltage battery still contains charge.

The truck must display READY before it is ready to drive. Toyota’s normal startup sequence is:
- Make sure the shift lever is in P.
- Depress the brake pedal.
- Press the POWER button briefly and firmly.
- Continue holding the brake until the READY indicator illuminates.
If the 12-volt battery is discharged, follow the vehicle-specific jump-start instructions in the owner’s manual. Do not attempt to access, jump, or service the high-voltage battery yourself. A warning message, failure to show READY, or repeated no-start condition calls for qualified diagnosis rather than random battery replacement.

The Bottom Line
The Toyota Tundra i-FORCE MAX makes the most sense for buyers who want a full-size truck with strong acceleration, substantial towing capability, and better fuel economy than a comparable nonhybrid model. Its compact battery is designed for torque assistance and energy recovery, not electric commuting, and its maximum towing and fuel-economy figures depend heavily on configuration.
