The strongest example by family heritage is the GM Small Block, whose lineage GM traces to 1955; Ford’s 5.0-liter Coyote is listed in 2026 Mustang and F-150 models; and GM catalogs a 5.7-liter L31 for industrial and marine use. These are not all the same kind of “production,” and none of the evidence shows one unchanged engine design running continuously for decades.
What counts as a V8 engine “still produced”?
The phrase can mean at least three different things: an engine installed in a new road vehicle, a powerplant currently listed for industrial or marine use, or a crate engine sold to customers for installation. Those categories answer different questions. A vehicle specification establishes a new-model application; a catalog establishes an offering, not necessarily a vehicle fitment; and a crate-engine program is not proof that the engine is installed in a current production car.
“Longest-running” also needs a unit of comparison. An engine family can survive through redesigns, new generations, and changing displacements while retaining a recognizable architecture or name. That is different from one unchanged engine model being built continuously. GM’s history supports family-level Small Block ancestry, not uninterrupted production of an identical engine.
V8 families with documented production or offerings in 2026
| Family or offering | What the evidence establishes | 2026 status and application |
|---|---|---|
| GM Chevrolet Small Block | GM dates the first Chevrolet Small Block V8 to 1955. In a 2026 announcement, the company says the family has passed 100 million engines and identifies 4.40-inch bore-center spacing as an architectural feature shared with Small Blocks dating to 1955. | GM Canada reported in April 2026 that fifth-generation V8 production was continuing at St. Catharines Propulsion as the plant prepared for the next generation. GM’s announcement describes the sixth generation for 2027 applications, not as a 2026 model-year engine. |
| Ford 5.0-liter Coyote V8 | Ford lists a 5.0-liter V8 in current Mustang and F-150 model specifications. Mustang Dark Horse is specified with a modified Gen-4 5.0-liter Coyote. | Ford’s 2026 Mustang specifications list the engine in GT and Dark Horse trims; its 2026 F-150 Lariat details list an available 5.0-liter V8. The evidence establishes current vehicle fitments, but does not provide a family-origin chronology sufficient to rank its longevity against other manufacturers’ engines. |
| GM 5.7-liter L31 V8 | GM Powered Solutions lists the L31 among industrial and marine gas engines. | This is a current catalog offering in non-road applications, not evidence of installation in a new passenger vehicle. A catalog listing alone does not establish an uninterrupted production history. |
| Chevrolet Performance crate engines | Chevrolet describes its Performance business as offering crate engines, transmissions, controllers, and supporting parts. | This is a separate sales route for enthusiasts. The cited material establishes the crate-engine program, but does not identify a particular engine there as a continuously produced road-car model. |
Why the GM Small Block has the strongest longevity claim
GM’s November 2024 retrospective dates the first Chevrolet Small Block V8 to 1955. Its September 2026 announcement says more than 100 million Small Block engines have been produced and points to the 4.40-inch bore-center spacing as a feature carried across the family’s history. That is compelling evidence of a long-lived architecture and lineage, but it is not evidence that every part, displacement, or generation remained unchanged.

The retrospective also documents a 6.2-liter Small Block in the 2025 Silverado 1500, rated by GM at 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft for that model year. This establishes a recent road-vehicle application, not by itself a 2026 fitment. Separately, GM Canada reported a C$691 million investment in St. Catharines Propulsion to support sixth-generation V8 production, noting that fifth-generation production was continuing while the plant prepared for the next generation.
The sixth generation is announced for 2027, not counted as a 2026 vehicle fitment
GM announced its sixth-generation Small Block on September 17, 2026. The stated engines are the 5.7-liter L76 and 6.6-liter L78 for next-generation light-duty pickups, plus a 6.7-liter LS6 for 2027 Corvette applications. GM says they retain the family’s 4.40-inch bore-center spacing. These details show that the family is continuing to evolve; they should not be used to imply that these engines were already installed in 2026 model-year vehicles.

What the 2026 Ford listings show
Ford’s model specifications provide clear evidence of V8 availability in 2026 road vehicles. For the Mustang GT, Ford lists the standard 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8 at 480 hp and 415 lb-ft; with available active exhaust, the listed output is 486 hp and 418 lb-ft. The 2026 Dark Horse’s modified Gen-4 5.0-liter Coyote is listed at 500 hp and 418 lb-ft. These are trim-specific manufacturer figures, not longevity measures.
Ford also lists an available 5.0-liter V8 for the 2026 F-150 Lariat, rated at 400 hp and 410 lb-ft. The listings show the 5.0-liter V8 serving more than one vehicle line, but the supplied specifications do not establish a comparative start date or uninterrupted family production timeline.

Why a top-ten ranking would be misleading
A defensible ranking would require comparable records for each candidate: the family’s origin, substantial generation changes, evidence of production continuity, and a dated current offering in a clearly defined market and application type. The available manufacturer material does not establish that record for ten V8 families across manufacturers. It also does not provide a cross-manufacturer standard for deciding whether a crate, marine, or industrial engine belongs beside an engine installed in a new passenger vehicle.
- GM’s Small Block has a well-documented 1955 family origin and a 2026 production transition, but its longevity claim is architectural and family-level.
- Ford’s 2026 model pages establish current Mustang and F-150 V8 fitments, but not a full comparative longevity chronology.
- GM’s L31 catalog listing counts as a current non-road offering only under a definition that includes industrial and marine engines.
- A crate-engine program is evidence of a sales channel, not automatically evidence of current vehicle production.
For those reasons, describing these as verified examples is more accurate than labeling them first through tenth. The sources establish continued V8 production and offerings, but not a ranked list of the ten longest-running engine families.
