The best-documented U.S. military UTV brands in the available official material are Polaris and John Deere. Polaris supplies MRZR tactical vehicles for Marine Corps and USSOCOM programs; John Deere’s military M-Gator is documented in Army logistics, airborne operations and field support. These examples do not establish a complete list of every UTV brand used across all U.S. military services.
Which UTV brands are documented in U.S. military use?
The evidence points to two distinct kinds of military utility vehicle: Polaris MRZR models for tactical mobility and John Deere M-Gators for utility and sustainment tasks. Their roles, configurations and procurement histories differ, so they should not be treated as interchangeable versions of ordinary recreational UTVs.

What are Polaris MRZR vehicles used for?
Tactical mobility and mission support
Polaris describes the MRZR Alpha as serving with U.S. Special Operations Command as a Light Tactical All-Terrain Vehicle (LTATV) and with the Marine Corps as an Ultra-Light Tactical Vehicle (ULTV). The Marine Corps policy also names the MRZR D4 Utility Task Vehicle and MRZR Alpha 4 ULTV. Moving over difficult terrain and by aircraft
MRZR Alpha is designed for off-road maneuverability and tactical air transport, allowing units to deploy a small vehicle where larger trucks may be impractical. Polaris describes the platform as air-transportable and intended to reduce logistical demand. Those are manufacturer descriptions of the vehicle’s design and intended use, not a guarantee that every aircraft or mission can accommodate every configuration. What the 2026 Marine Corps order shows
In June 2026, the Marine Corps placed its first delivery order under the new ULTV contract for more than 70 four-seat MRZR Alphas. The order included standard 1 kW and export-power 5 kW variants, along with mission accessories. The contract itself has a ceiling of up to $98 million and an ordering period of up to five years; neither figure should be read as the actual cost or duration of the first order. What is a John Deere M-Gator used for?
Supply runs and field support
The M-Gator is a six-wheeled military version of John Deere’s Gator utility vehicle family. Army reporting describes it carrying supplies and supporting artillery units, as well as assisting airborne operations and recovering equipment at drop zones. Payload, speed and securing cargo
A 2019 U.S. Army Safety Center article reports an M-Gator payload capacity of 1,400 pounds, including a 200-pound driver and 200-pound passenger, and a maximum speed of 18 mph. Airborne use and military-specific features
A U.S. Army technical manual documents an M-Gator rigged with a fire-vehicle equipment package and cargo bag for low-velocity airdrop. The Army Transportation Museum also describes military modifications including a front litter rack, blackout lights and cargo-box changes, and notes that the vehicle can run on diesel or JP-8 fuel. The museum says John Deere began creating the M-Gator in 1996 and developed an A1 version in 2007 with a more powerful engine, roll bar and seat belts. Are military UTVs used for combat or logistics?
Both, depending on the platform and mission—but the documented examples emphasize mobility and support rather than presenting these vehicles as combat vehicles in their own right. MRZRs support tactical movement and mission activities such as communications and operations. M-Gators are documented mainly in logistics and sustainment tasks, including supply transport and airborne support. Their tactical equipment or military procurement does not by itself mean they are armored fighting vehicles.

Why these are not simply recreational UTVs
The underlying vehicles may share a utility-vehicle format with commercial products, but military models and procurements are shaped around specific missions. The documented differences include tactical air transport, mission power options and accessories on MRZR Alpha orders, and blackout lighting, cargo modifications, fuel compatibility and airdrop rigging on M-Gators. That does not mean every military vehicle has the same equipment: configuration depends on the service, model and task.

What the available evidence does—and does not—establish
Polaris is the clearest current tactical UTV supplier in the cited official material, with a 2026 Marine Corps contract and delivery order and a stated USSOCOM MRZR Alpha role. The M-Gator is a well-documented Army utility platform, but the cited Army articles and museum information describe particular uses and historical details rather than a current fleet total. These sources do not provide a comprehensive inventory of every UTV brand used by the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and special operations forces, so the two documented brands should not be presented as the complete list.
