The F-Pace and E-Pace also scored above 94%, but their results come from different SUV classes and survey cohorts, so they should not be treated as a controlled ranking. These figures are not a laboratory comparison. The vehicles belong to different classes, the surveys cover different cohorts, and no complete controlled ranking exists for every Jaguar model year, engine and gearbox.

How to interpret Jaguar reliability surveys
Survey percentages describe the experience of a group of owners, not the condition of the car in front of you. A 95% rating can still include a car with an expensive fault, while a lower-scoring model may be an excellent purchase when it has complete servicing and documented remedial work.
What Car? is the clearest directly comparable source for the three models above, but its results should be read with their sample and class context. Consumer Reports explains that its reliability history is based on subscriber questionnaires covering 17 trouble spots and warns that older or less-popular vehicles may not have enough responses for statistically confident estimates. That methodology caution is useful, but it does not establish a separate Jaguar model ranking here. A current-model quality score from J.D. Power likewise should not be used to rank older used Jaguars.

The 2010–2019 XJ is the standout because its 95.8% rating is the highest directly reviewed result in this comparison. Only 14% of surveyed cars were reported to have problems in What Car?’s 2024 used-car survey. The source describes this generation as unusually consistent among Jaguar models.
Typical trouble areas
Among the XJs that did develop faults, non-engine electrical systems and the exhaust were the principal areas mentioned. Reported cars could spend more than a week off the road, so inconvenience matters even when the percentage of affected cars is relatively small.
Surveyed petrol cars were praised as less prone to issues. Diesel owners more often reported warning lights, engine faults and diesel particulate filter (DPF) problems. This is an owner-survey pattern, not proof that every petrol XJ is trouble-free or that every diesel will fail.

What to check before buying an XJ
- Request invoices showing regular servicing, not just stamped entries or a recently reset service display.
- On a cold start, watch for warning lights that remain illuminated, rough running or messages that return after a test drive.
- Test every electrical function: seat movement and heating, windows, climate controls, infotainment, navigation, parking sensors, cameras, lights and the instrument display.
- For a diesel, ask specifically about DPF regeneration, warning-light history and any engine-management repairs.
- Confirm that the car reaches operating temperature, idles smoothly and shifts without hesitation.
Jaguar F-Pace: a good survey score that needs a stricter inspection
Survey position
The F-Pace scored 94.4% and placed 30th of 76 family SUVs in the latest What Car? survey cited on its review page. That is a respectable result, but the same source characterises the model’s record as mixed and places Jaguar 27th of 30 manufacturers in that survey. The brand-level result is a warning not to generalise the F-Pace score to every Jaguar.
Powertrain risks to investigate
Timing-chain component wear is one of the most important concerns because replacement can be costly. Listen for rattling or knocking on a cold start, ask whether timing-chain work has been done, and have a specialist assess any uncertain noise rather than relying on a warm-engine demonstration.
Some 3.0-litre V6 diesels have reported crankshaft failures. That does not identify every 3.0-litre diesel as defective, but it raises the value of a documented maintenance history and a specialist inspection. Look for evidence of oil-service compliance, previous engine work and any warning-light or low-oil-pressure event.

F-Pace recall and build-date checks
Do not infer recall status from the model year. Verify the vehicle identification number (VIN) and repair paperwork for the following issues identified on specific production runs:

- Some early automatic examples built through 12 April 2016 had a driveshaft issue.
- Some cars built from 12 October to 11 December 2018 had a crankshaft-pulley bolt issue.
- Fuel-leak recalls affected specified production windows.
- Certain 3.0-litre diesels built from 3 March to 15 June 2016 had a starter-motor cable concern.
Ask a Jaguar dealer to confirm whether each applicable campaign was completed and to provide completion evidence. A seller’s statement that a recall was “probably done” is not verification.
Bodywork and accident repairs
The F-Pace uses aluminium body panels, and repairs can cost more than equivalent work on conventional steel bodywork. Inspect panel gaps, paint texture, fasteners and underbody damage in daylight. A history check and a body specialist’s opinion are worthwhile after any claimed accident repair.

What owners reported
The E-Pace scored 94.2% and ranked 16th of 30 family SUVs in the latest survey cited by What Car?. However, 38% of surveyed cars went wrong, 43% spent more than a week in a workshop and 13% of owners received repair bills of £1,500 or more. Jaguar covered 78% of repairs in that survey. Those numbers describe that survey cohort; they are not a forecast for a particular used E-Pace.
Fault categories
The reported problems were led by sat-nav and infotainment faults (18%), followed by bodywork (7%), non-engine electrics (7%), engine faults (5%) and gearbox or clutch faults (5%), with other categories also represented.

Confirm VIN-specific recall completion for issues including front brake hoses on cars built from 4 October to 22 December 2017, fuel-rail leaks on specified early production, and other production-window software or seat-frame concerns. The exact applicability depends on the VIN, so a generic model-year search is insufficient.

Practical E-Pace inspection
- Pair a long road test with repeated stops and restarts to expose intermittent infotainment, sensor or warning-light faults.
- Check that the navigation, touchscreen, reversing camera, parking sensors, driver-assistance alerts and Bluetooth operate without resets.
- Look for uneven tyre wear, pulling under braking and noises from the suspension or drivetrain.
- Ask for invoices for gearbox, clutch, engine-management and electrical repairs rather than accepting verbal assurances.
- Budget for the possibility of a long workshop stay if a fault is not resolved at the first visit.
Which Jaguar should you choose?
Choose the XJ when reliability evidence is the priority
Select a well-maintained 2010–2019 XJ, preferably with a complete history and a clean inspection, when your priority is the strongest available survey evidence. A petrol example may be preferable if its condition and service record are equal to those of a diesel, because surveyed petrol owners reported fewer issues.
Choose the F-Pace when you need an SUV and can verify the powertrain
The F-Pace can make sense when its practicality is important, provided a specialist checks cold-start timing-chain noise, the engine history and the relevant recalls. Do not buy solely on the 94.4% score.
Choose the E-Pace only after allowing for downtime risk
The E-Pace’s 94.2% result is respectable, but its survey-reported workshop stays and high repair bills make service support and financial reserves especially important. A car with documented fixes and remaining cover can be a better proposition than a cheaper example with unexplained faults.
A step-by-step checklist for buying any used Jaguar
- Define the exact car. Record the model, model year, engine, transmission, mileage, registration and VIN. Reliability varies more by specification, maintenance and production period than by badge alone.
- Read the service file. Match invoices to the mileage and dates. Look for oil services, major scheduled work, cooling-system repairs, timing-chain work where relevant and evidence that warning lights were diagnosed rather than cleared.
- Check recalls by VIN. Jaguar’s online recall resource covers recall information issued within the last 15 years for vehicles from model year 1995 onward. A dealer can confirm applicability and completion; request written evidence.
- Arrange an independent specialist inspection. The inspection should include a cold start, road test, lift inspection, fluid checks, battery and charging checks, underbody examination and a review of stored fault codes.
- Use a diagnostic reader only as an extra check. A compatible generic OBD-II reader may reveal stored codes, but no particular scanner has been validated here and a scanner cannot detect every mechanical, body or intermittent electrical fault. It is not a substitute for a Jaguar specialist.
- Price the risk before negotiating. Obtain estimates for any advisory items, check the cost and availability of parts locally, and decide how much downtime you can tolerate. A low purchase price is not a saving if the car immediately needs a major repair.
- Make the seller demonstrate the car cold. Arrange a first-start appointment, inspect warning lights before the engine runs, and reject a car that arrives warm without a credible explanation.
Questions to ask the seller and inspecting specialist
- Has the car ever had a timing-chain, crankshaft, engine, gearbox or clutch repair?
- Which recall campaigns apply to this VIN, and where is the completion paperwork?
- What faults have appeared in the last two years, and what parts were replaced?
- How long was the car off the road for its most recent repair?
- Are any warning lights, infotainment glitches, DPF messages or electrical faults currently intermittent?
- Can the specialist document the cold-start sound, stored codes and underbody condition in the inspection report?
Bottom line for used-Jaguar shoppers
On the evidence available, the 2010–2019 Jaguar XJ is the safest reliability bet, with the highest surveyed rating and the lowest reported problem incidence of the three directly reviewed models. The F-Pace and E-Pace remain viable choices, but each requires model-specific checks: timing-chain and diesel-engine scrutiny for the F-Pace, and electrical, infotainment, recall and downtime scrutiny for the E-Pace. Whichever model you consider, buy the documented, independently inspected example—not the highest trim level or the most attractive price.
