The Toyota RAV4 topped a U.S. compilation of 2025 SUV and crossover sales, followed by the Honda CR-V and Chevrolet Equinox. But the available evidence does not establish that four-cylinder engines powered all—or most—of the top sellers, or that fuel efficiency caused their sales success. The ranking is useful; the headline’s engine-and-cause claim needs more qualification.
Which SUVs sold the most in 2025?
CarCody’s compilation of U.S. calendar-year 2025 sales places the Toyota RAV4 first, the Honda CR-V second and the Chevrolet Equinox third. It includes crossovers and combines figures drawn from different reporting sources, rather than a single, uniform retail-registration dataset. Treat the figures as a compiled ranking, not as a harmonized official count. CarCody’s 2025 SUV sales compilation explains its source trail and category caveats.
| Rank | Model | Reported 2025 U.S. sales |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Toyota RAV4 | 479,288 |
| 2 | Honda CR-V | 403,768 |
| 3 | Chevrolet Equinox | 332,301 |
| 4 | Hyundai Tucson | 234,230 |
| 5 | Ford Explorer | 222,706 |
| 6 | Nissan Rogue | 217,896 |
| 7 | Jeep Grand Cherokee | 210,082 |
| 8 | Kia Sportage | 182,823 |
| 9 | Subaru Forester | 175,070 |
| 10 | Jeep Wrangler | 167,322 |
These are calendar-year sales figures as reported by the compilation; the sources and counting methods are not consistent enough to treat small differences between models as a precise market-share comparison. CarCody’s ranking cautions that “SUV” definitions vary and that some underlying figures are trade-compiled or await primary verification.
What the official company figures confirm
Ford reported 222,706 Explorer sales in 2025, up 14.7%, and called the Explorer America’s best-selling three-row SUV. That supports a claim about its three-row category, not a claim that it outsold every SUV. Ford’s 2025 sales release gives the company figure.

Toyota Motor North America reported 2,518,071 U.S. vehicle sales for 2025, up 8.0%, and said electrified vehicles accounted for 1,183,248 sales, or 47.0% of its total. It listed the RAV4 among models with a best-ever sales year, but the release did not give a RAV4 unit total. These company-wide electrified sales figures do not validate the ranking’s RAV4 count. Toyota’s year-end 2025 U.S. sales release provides the corporate totals.
General Motors said its Chevrolet SUV lineup had its best sales ever in 2025 and that it led the full-size SUV market for the 51st consecutive year. Those statements do not independently verify the specific Equinox figure in the compiled ranking. GM’s 2025 sales release describes its company and category results.

Does the ranking prove four-cylinder engines powered the top sellers?
No. A sales table identifies models and reported unit totals; it does not list the engines fitted to each model-year trim. The accessible Toyota RAV4 page reached through a 2025 URL had rolled forward to 2026 content, while Honda’s 2025 CR-V specification URL redirected to 2027 specifications. Those pages cannot establish the configurations sold across every 2025 trim. Toyota’s RAV4 page and Honda’s redirected CR-V specifications page show why model year matters.
The Ford evidence is narrower: Ford said the 2025 Explorer Tremor, introduced in the fourth quarter, offered an available 400-horsepower EcoBoost engine. That is a trim-specific option, not evidence that every Explorer—or every SUV in the ranking—used the same engine. Ford’s Explorer Tremor announcement describes that configuration.

A reliable cylinder-count comparison would require specifications for each model’s 2025 trims, separating standard and optional engines and gasoline engines from hybrid or plug-in-hybrid systems. A hybrid’s engine is only one part of its powertrain: electric motors and battery operation also affect how the vehicle uses fuel. Calling a hybrid simply a “four-cylinder SUV” can obscure that distinction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Did fuel efficiency make these SUVs popular?
The available sales data cannot answer that causal question. It reports how many vehicles sold, not why buyers chose them, and it does not compare fuel economy against competing models or measure buyer motivations. Efficiency may be one consideration for SUV shoppers, but the ranking alone cannot show how much it contributed to any model’s result.

Automaker electrification totals provide context, not proof of the headline’s claim. Ford reported 228,072 hybrid and plug-in-hybrid vehicle sales in 2025, up 21.7%; the figure covers Ford vehicles company-wide, not SUVs alone. Ford’s year-end release reports that total. Neither it nor Toyota’s company-wide electrified-vehicle count isolates four-cylinder SUVs or explains individual model sales.

How to read the 2025 SUV sales story
- Best-selling overall in the compilation: The Toyota RAV4, with 479,288 reported U.S. sales, ahead of the Honda CR-V at 403,768.
- Category distinction: Ford’s Explorer figure supports the automaker’s three-row SUV claim, not an overall SUV lead.
- Engine claim: The ranking does not include model-year, trim-level powertrain data, so it cannot establish that four-cylinder engines powered all or most of its top ten.
- Efficiency claim: Sales totals do not reveal whether fuel economy caused a model’s popularity.
