Which Sedans Can Really Eat Sports Cars for Breakfast? Three Proven by Instrumented Tests

A defensible answer to “which sedans can beat sports cars?” starts with three directly comparable 2025 cars: Audi RS7, BMW M5 and Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. See the measured results, manufacturer claims, tire details and trade-offs.

The defensible, data-backed answer is three sedans: the 2025 Audi RS7, 2025 BMW M5 and 2025 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. In Car and Driver’s April 25, 2025 comparison, the RS7 was quickest to 60 mph, the M5 was close behind, and the rear-drive Cadillac generated the highest skidpad grip with its optional track-focused tires. That is a useful answer to the question, but it is not evidence that any sedan beats every sports car, nor does it support inventing six more entries from a different year, trim or test method.

The table and explanations below separate independent instrumented results from manufacturer claims, identify the exact U.S. model years, and show where acceleration, cornering, traction and everyday practicality point in different directions.

The comparable results at a glance

Car and Driver tested all three cars under one published comparison protocol. That makes these figures more useful against one another than isolated claims taken from different launches, tires or weather conditions. BMW and Cadillac also publish their own acceleration claims; those are shown separately because a manufacturer test is not the same measurement as an independent magazine test.

2025 BMW M5 717-hp plug-in-hybrid system, 738 lb-ft, all-wheel drive. 3.4 seconds (BMW USA and BMW Group) 3.0 seconds 0.98 g BMW’s published result carries a warning that specification, conditions, procedure and driving style change acceleration.
2025 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing Supercharged 6.2-liter V8, 668 hp, 659 lb-ft; rear-wheel drive; manual or optional 10-speed automatic. 3.4 seconds (Cadillac) 3.7 seconds 1.09 g Skidpad car used the optional Precision package with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires.

Car and Driver’s numbers come from its April 25, 2025 “Supersedans, Compared” test. BMW’s specifications are from its current U.S. M5 technical page and the June 25, 2024 BMW Group PressClub release for the 2025 car. Cadillac’s figures are from its current U.S. CT5-V Blackwing specifications page, accessed October 13, 2026. A number in one column should not be presented as if it were a universal constant for every tire, transmission or model year.

What “eat sports cars for breakfast” should mean

The phrase is entertaining, but it needs a measurement standard. A sedan can dominate one contest and lose another:

  • Standing-start acceleration: 0–60 mph rewards launch control, all-wheel-drive traction, power delivery and the test surface. It is the clearest measure of traffic-light pace, not a complete performance ranking.
  • Cornering: A skidpad measures steady-state lateral grip. It does not reproduce a full road course, but it reveals how tires, suspension and chassis balance affect available cornering force.
  • Braking and repeated laps: The supplied comparison establishes the skidpad figures above, but it does not provide a complete braking or lap-time leaderboard. Those should not be inferred.
  • Usability: Four doors, rear seating and a useful cargo opening can make a very fast sedan more versatile than a two-seat sports car. The RS7’s rear hatch is the clearest practical distinction called out in the comparison.

Weather, altitude, fuel or battery state, tire temperature, tire compound, launch procedure, drivetrain configuration and driver technique can move a result by several tenths. Treat the figures as measurements of these tested cars, not promises for every example on a dealer lot.

2025 Audi RS7: the quickest in this head-to-head

The RS7 led the three-car comparison in the test’s 0–60-mph run. Its all-wheel-drive traction helps convert engine output into forward motion when the launch is clean, which is why a large luxury hatchback can leave many purpose-built performance cars behind in a short sprint.

Its 1.06-g skidpad result placed it between the Cadillac and BMW. That middle position matters: straight-line speed did not automatically translate into the highest measured cornering grip. The result belongs to the exact tires, alignment and equipment on Car and Driver’s test car; it should not be used to predict a different wheel-and-tire package.

The body style is a functional advantage. The rear hatch opens a larger, more usable cargo area than a conventional sedan trunk, so the RS7 can carry bulky luggage while retaining four doors. That does not make it a crossover, and the comparison does not establish a cargo-volume figure, but the opening itself is a meaningful everyday benefit.

Choose the RS7 when effortless launches, all-weather traction and hatchback utility matter more than maximum track grip or a manual gearbox. Its measured advantage is acceleration in this specific test, not proof that it is the best choice for every road or driver.

2025 BMW M5: hybrid power with a mass penalty

The current U.S. M5 combines a combustion engine with plug-in-hybrid assistance and sends power through all-wheel drive. BMW lists a 717-hp system output and 738 lb-ft of torque, while its published 0–60 claim is slower than the independent test result recorded by Car and Driver. BMW also states that acceleration varies with vehicle specification, conditions, procedure and driving style; that qualification should travel with the number whenever it is quoted.

In the comparison, the M5 reached 60 mph just behind the RS7. Car and Driver specifically noted that the BMW’s mass works against its standing-start performance despite its power advantage. That is an important engineering lesson: peak output alone does not determine launch results. Vehicle weight, tire loading, torque delivery and the control software managing the hybrid system all matter.

The M5’s 0.98-g skidpad result was the lowest of the three tested cars. It does not mean the chassis is incapable of fast cornering; it means this configuration produced less steady-state lateral grip than the RS7 and the Cadillac on that test surface. A buyer who values highway acceleration may accept that trade-off, while a track-day driver may prioritize a lighter-feeling car and a tire package designed for repeated cornering.

BMW’s June 25, 2024 PressClub release for the 2025 model lists a standard electronically limited top speed of 155 mph and an available 190-mph limit with the M Driver’s Package. Those are maximum-speed specifications, not guarantees that a public-road driver can safely or legally reach them. The same release describes the plug-in-hybrid system and its projected electric range, but the supplied material does not establish a single real-world range figure for every U.S. configuration.

2025 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing: the grip specialist with a manual option

Cadillac takes a different route. The CT5-V Blackwing uses a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, rear-wheel drive and a choice of manual transmission or optional 10-speed automatic. Cadillac’s current U.S. specification page claims a 0–60-mph time that is quicker than the independent result in the comparison. That gap is a reminder that launch technique, surface and test conditions can change the ranking.

The Blackwing produced the highest skidpad number in the three-car test, but the tire specification is essential context. Car and Driver’s car wore Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires as part of the optional Precision package. Those tires are far more track-oriented than ordinary street rubber, so the 1.09-g result should not be treated as a universal capability for every Blackwing or as a promise that the same tire fits every performance sedan.

Rear-wheel drive changes the character of power delivery. Instead of relying on front-axle traction to pull the car out of a corner, the Cadillac asks the rear tires to manage acceleration and rotation. That can feel more interactive to an experienced driver, but it also makes throttle control and tire condition more consequential, especially on a cold or wet road.

The available manual transmission is another differentiator. It may not produce the quickest launch every time, yet it gives the driver direct control that the two automatic-focused rivals do not match. Cadillac labels the Blackwing as limited availability, so buyers should verify current inventory and the exact transmission, tire and Precision-package equipment rather than assuming every listed car has the test specification.

Why a responsible list stops at three

The headline asks for nine sedans, but a trustworthy ranking requires comparable evidence for all nine. The directly comparable material here covers the 2025 RS7, 2025 M5 and 2025 CT5-V Blackwing in one independent test. Other familiar performance sedans may be excellent, but naming six additional models without the same model-year, tire, drivetrain and measurement documentation would turn a data question into speculation.

Model years also matter. BMW’s U.S. site describes a 2027 M5, while the Car and Driver comparison is specifically about 2025 cars. Mixing those generations would make a table look complete while quietly changing the subject. The same rule applies to trim levels: a base tire, an optional track package and a different transmission can alter both acceleration and cornering.

A future nine-car comparison should use one test source where possible, or clearly label separate procedures. At minimum it should record 0–60 mph, quarter-mile or rolling acceleration when available, braking, skidpad or lap data, tire size and compound, drivetrain, transmission and test conditions. Without those controls, “fastest sedan” is usually a comparison of marketing claims rather than cars.

How to use the numbers when choosing a car

If your priority is the quickest launch

Start with the independent 0–60 results, then verify the exact drivetrain and tires on the car you are considering. The RS7 and M5 benefited from all-wheel drive in the cited test. The Cadillac’s rear-drive layout can still be brutally quick, but its result shows how strongly launch conditions influence a manual or automatic rear-drive car.

If you care most about cornering grip

Look at the skidpad result and the tire specification together. The Cadillac’s lead is inseparable from the Cup 2 R-equipped Precision package. Ask whether you want a track-biased tire’s dry grip and compromises in rain, noise and wear, or a more versatile street tire. Do not compare a specialty tire result with an all-season-equipped sedan as if the chassis alone created the difference.

If the car must serve as daily transportation

Consider the cargo opening, rear-seat access, ride tuning, winter traction and the way each powertrain fits your routine. The RS7’s hatch is the only cargo advantage explicitly established in the comparison. The M5 adds plug-in-hybrid hardware and all-wheel drive, while the Cadillac offers a manual and a rear-drive feel. Those are distinct ownership priorities, not interchangeable versions of the same car.

If driver involvement matters more than the stopwatch

The Blackwing’s manual transmission and rear-drive balance offer the most traditional performance-sedan interaction of this trio. The M5’s hybrid system delivers enormous system output but also adds complexity and mass. The RS7 emphasizes rapid, repeatable all-wheel-drive launches and hatchback practicality. None is objectively “best” until you decide which compromises you will live with every day.

A checklist before you trust a performance claim

  1. Confirm the model year and market. A 2025 U.S. car is not automatically comparable with a 2026 or 2027 version, or with a vehicle sold elsewhere.
  2. Identify the tested configuration. Record transmission, drive layout, wheel size, tire model and optional packages.
  3. Separate claim from measurement. Put manufacturer acceleration figures in one column and independent instrumented results in another.
  4. Read the conditions. Temperature, surface, altitude, battery charge, launch mode and driver technique can all affect the result.
  5. Check availability. Cadillac describes the Blackwing as limited availability; confirm that the car you can actually buy has the equipment you are comparing.
  6. Match the metric to your use. A 0–60 time answers a launch question; it does not answer braking, road-course pace, wet-weather confidence or cargo needs.

On the evidence available, these three sedans genuinely challenge sports cars in at least one measurable way, while each wins a different part of the argument. The RS7 owns this test’s launch, the M5 demonstrates how hybrid power can be blunted by mass, and the Blackwing delivers the strongest measured cornering grip with its specialized tire package. Calling all nine spots filled would require data that has not been established for the other six.
