Which Pickup Trucks Have the Lowest 5-Year Maintenance Costs?

Selected 2025 Ram 1500, Silverado 1500 and Ford Ranger configurations have Edmunds five-year maintenance estimates near $3,800–$3,900—but configuration matters and the figures are not a complete ranking.

There is no definitive lowest-cost pickup in the available estimates: the figures are tied to particular trims and configurations, not a complete like-for-like ranking. Among the 2025 configurations compared, a Ram 1500 Big Horn, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 RST and Ford Ranger each have an estimated five-year maintenance cost near $3,800–$3,900. These are estimates, not guaranteed bills, and Edmunds lists repairs separately.

How the selected 2025 trucks compare

The figures below are five-year estimates for the named configurations on Edmunds’ 2025 cost-to-own pages. Because trim, engine and drivetrain affect the comparison, they should not be read as rankings of every version of each model.

Truck and configuration Estimated maintenance, five years Estimated repairs, five years
2025 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Big Horn, 4WD, 3.6L mild hybrid $3,772 $834
2025 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab RST, 4WD, 2.7L turbo $3,902 $1,009
2025 Ford Ranger, selected configuration $3,896 $900
2025 Nissan Frontier, selected configuration $5,367 $854
2025 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab SL $4,260 $744
2025 Ford F-150 SuperCrew Lariat, 4WD, 5.0L V8 $5,478 $1,105
2025 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab SR5, 4WD, 2.4L turbo $6,911 $993
2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport $6,387 Not stated on the cited Edmunds page

Sources: Edmunds’ 2025 Ram 1500 estimates, Silverado 1500 estimates, Ranger estimates, Frontier estimates, F-150 estimates and Tacoma estimates. The selected Ram, Silverado and Ranger examples cluster near $3,800–$3,900, but the data do not establish an overall winner.

What Edmunds counts as maintenance

Edmunds’ True Cost to Own is a proprietary five-year estimate, not a record of what an owner has actually paid. Its stated assumptions include 15,000 miles driven per year, traditional financing, above-average credit, a 10% down payment and a 60-month loan. The total cost-to-own figure also includes depreciation, insurance, financing, taxes and fees, fuel, maintenance and repairs; use the maintenance line alone when comparing maintenance costs. Edmunds explains its methodology.

Maintenance combines scheduled factory-recommended service with estimated unscheduled upkeep. Edmunds’ examples include wheel alignment and replacement of batteries, brakes, headlamps, hoses, exhaust parts, bulbs, tires and wipers. Tire replacement estimates are supplied by Tire Rack. Repairs are a separate estimate for work not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, using the stated five-year, 15,000-mile-per-year assumption. Edmunds’ estimate definitions.

Why the trim matters

A model name alone is not enough to predict the estimate. The Frontier examples differ by more than $1,000 in maintenance between the selected configuration and the Crew Cab SL. On the Tacoma page, the listed SR5 estimate is $6,911 while the TRD Sport estimate is $6,387. The F-150 page likewise shows different maintenance estimates among trims. Those variations make it important to match the exact trim, engine and drivetrain you are considering rather than assume one figure applies across the range.

How to make a fair comparison

  • Compare the same model year and truck class, such as midsize with midsize or full-size with full-size.
  • Match trim, engine and drivetrain as closely as possible.
  • Check the mileage and other assumptions behind the estimate, and treat the result as an estimate rather than a promised cost.
  • Keep maintenance and repairs in separate columns; combining them answers a broader question than maintenance alone.
  • If comparing total cost to own, include depreciation, insurance, financing, taxes and fees, fuel, maintenance and repairs rather than labeling the total as maintenance.

Maintenance cost is not a reliability ranking

A low maintenance estimate does not by itself mean a truck is less likely to need unexpected repairs. CARFAX’s 2026 pickup reliability rankings assess the likelihood of unexpected repairs over five years for model years 2019–2023, using U.S. maintenance records. That is a different measure from Edmunds’ dollar estimates for selected new 2025 configurations, so the two should not be combined as though they were the same ranking. CARFAX describes its reliability-ranking methodology.
