Lexus rated the 2014 version at 416 horsepower and 371 lb-ft of torque. Its distinct engine, transmission, differential, suspension and brake hardware make it a notable chapter in Lexus’s F performance line, while its four-seat cabin and modest cargo capacity keep its practical limits in view.
What makes the IS F different from an ordinary IS?
Lexus introduced the IS F for model year 2008 as the first production Lexus to wear the F performance marque, according to Lexus’s 2014 press release. The distinction is mechanical, not just visual: the IS F combines a 5.0-liter V8, rear-wheel drive, an eight-speed Sport Direct-Shift automatic, a limited-slip rear differential and model-specific chassis and brake components.
That separates it from an ordinary IS and from F SPORT appearance or equipment packages. Lexus’s factory specifications document the hardware; they do not, by themselves, establish how the IS F performs against rivals in independent testing.
Engine and transmission: the core of the IS F
Naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8
Lexus lists the 2014 IS F’s 5.0-liter V8 at 416 hp at 6,600 rpm and 371 lb-ft at 5,200 rpm, with a 6,800-rpm redline. The figures come from the manufacturer’s September 24, 2013 release for the 2014 model, not an independent measurement. Lexus Canada’s 2008 specification sheet also lists 416 hp and 371 lb-ft.

Lexus’s 2010 model-year release describes the engine’s dual intake, direct and port fuel injection, electrically actuated intake cam timing and cylinder-head oil scavenge pump. Those details help explain the level of engineering behind the powertrain without implying a particular reliability record.
Eight-speed Sport Direct-Shift automatic
The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic with paddle shifters and a manual mode. Lexus says manual mode holds gears to the 6,800-rpm redline and describes automatic throttle blips on downshifts. Its 2014 release also states that upshifts take one-tenth of a second; that is a manufacturer specification, not an independently verified shift-time test.

Rear-wheel drive, differential and chassis hardware
The IS F is rear-wheel drive. Lexus’s 2010 release, issued in 2009, documents a Torsen limited-slip differential as standard for the 2010 model year. For 2014, Lexus names Brembo brakes and describes double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension with IS F-specific control arms, springs, dampers and stabilizer bars.
These components are part of the factory-developed performance package. Lexus’s description of the car’s road-and-track ability is manufacturer positioning, not a substitute for independent comparative testing.

The 2008 and 2010 details are in Lexus Canada’s 2008 IS F specification sheet and Lexus’s 2010 model-year release. The 2014 details appear in the 2014 Lexus IS F press release. These checkpoints should not be read as a complete chronology of every market or production change. Lexus UK’s archive says the car was on sale in the UK from 2008 to 2013; that is a UK sales period, not a global production-period statement.

Everyday practicality and tire fitment
Lexus Canada’s 2008 specification sheet lists four seats and 11.0 cubic feet of cargo capacity. In its 2014 US release, Lexus calls the IS F comfortable and practical for everyday driving. That is the manufacturer’s assessment; the stated seating and cargo figures give a more concrete sense of its packaging.
The documented tire setup is staggered: 225/40R19 at the front and 255/35R19 at the rear. Lexus’s 2014 release also describes IS F-specific tire development. Before replacing tires, check the individual vehicle’s placard, the tire’s load and speed ratings, and the condition and age of the tires currently fitted; verify fitment for the exact car rather than assuming every example has its original wheels and tires.

What to check when considering a used IS F
The available Lexus specifications establish what the model was built with, but they do not establish current asking prices, typical repair costs, failure rates or a verified list of common defects. A forum question asking “What are common issues with these cars?” captures a buyer concern, not evidence that any particular issue is widespread.
For an individual car, assess its documented condition rather than assuming model-wide problems from anecdotal claims. Review service records, inspect for modifications and their quality, check tire age and condition, and confirm the exact equipment and market specification. A model-specific reliability or pricing judgment requires current, dated independent evidence.
How to compare the IS F with other performance sedans
Useful comparison points are the powertrain and ownership details that can be checked directly: naturally aspirated versus forced-induction power delivery, automatic transmission and paddle controls, rear-wheel-drive layout, model-year equipment, seating and cargo capacity, and consumables such as the staggered tire sizes. The manufacturer records cited here do not support a full rival-by-rival performance ranking.
