Which Petrol Cars Under ₹10 Lakh in India Actually Fit Your Budget?

A practical, evidence-based shortlist of petrol cars with variants below ₹10 lakh ex-showroom in India, plus exact steps to verify fuel, transmission, city price and on-road cost before booking.

Short answer: If your ceiling is ₹10 lakh ex-showroom, Hyundai Exter and Grand i10 Nios are the clearest fits in the available official price data. Exter is listed at ₹5.80–9.41 lakh and Grand i10 Nios at ₹5.59–8.04 lakh. Selected variants of Hyundai i20, Venue, Nissan Gravite and Nissan Magnite Kuro may also qualify, but each requires a variant-level check because the model range, fuel type, transmission or city price can change eligibility.

This is an ex-showroom shortlist, not an on-road affordability claim. Registration, insurance, taxes, handling charges and location-specific fees can push the final invoice well above ₹10 lakh, so obtain a current quote for your city before booking.

What “under ₹10 lakh” means here

The ₹10 lakh limit is treated as an ex-showroom ceiling. Hyundai’s official model finder labels its displayed prices ex-showroom. Renault’s pricing page likewise describes displayed prices as ex-showroom for selected city limits and warns that prices can change. Neither basis tells you the final amount payable at registration.

On-road cost varies with state and city taxes, registration category, insurance choice, dealer charges and optional accessories. A car shown at ₹9.99 lakh ex-showroom can therefore exceed an on-road budget of ₹10 lakh by a wide margin. Ask the dealer for a written, itemised quotation dated for your intended purchase month.

Prices below are listed figures retrieved in 2026. Treat them as a starting point, not a price guarantee. A model is eligible only when the specific petrol variant you can buy in your city is at or below the chosen ex-showroom ceiling.

Petrol cars with evidence of eligibility

Model Body style or positioning supported by the available data Listed ex-showroom price What still needs checking
Hyundai Exter SUV; 1.2-litre petrol; manual and AMT availability ₹5.80–9.41 lakh in Hyundai’s model finder; homepage starting price ₹5,80,600 Exact city, trim, transmission and current offer
Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Hatchback ₹5.59–8.04 lakh Exact petrol variant, city price and current availability
Hyundai i20 Hatchback ₹5.99–10.63 lakh Only lower variants fit; upper trims exceed ₹10 lakh
Hyundai Venue SUV; 1.2-litre petrol offered among multiple powertrains Homepage starting price ₹7,99,900 Exact petrol trim and transmission; the starting figure is not proof that every petrol variant qualifies
Nissan Gravite Model and variant listing available One listed variant at ₹6,68,400 Confirm that the quoted variant is petrol, its transmission and the city basis
Nissan Magnite Kuro Special-edition variant listing Listed variants from ₹7,85,000 to ₹9,99,400 Confirm petrol fuel, transmission, city price and the exact Kuro variant

Hyundai’s model finder is the strongest evidence in this set because it supplies model-level ranges and identifies body style and transmission information for the Hyundai examples. Nissan’s retrieved page is a variant-price listing rather than a complete comparison matrix, so its figures should be used as leads for verification rather than as a final ranking.

Best starting points, depending on your priority

Choose Exter for an SUV-shaped package with a clear sub-₹10-lakh range

The Exter is listed as an SUV with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and manual or AMT transmission availability. Hyundai’s model finder places the range at ₹5.80–9.41 lakh ex-showroom, entirely below ₹10 lakh in that listing. The company homepage separately shows a starting price of ₹5,80,600.

That makes Exter the simplest SUV recommendation from the available evidence: the published range itself remains under the ceiling, and buyers can choose between a manual and an AMT. You still need to match the exact trim to your equipment needs and obtain the city-specific invoice. The evidence does not establish comparative boot volume, safety rating, fuel economy, service cost or resale value, so those should be verified independently before you decide.

Choose Grand i10 Nios when a hatchback is the sensible fit

Grand i10 Nios is listed as a hatchback with a ₹5.59–8.04 lakh ex-showroom range. Every price in that displayed range is below ₹10 lakh, making variant eligibility straightforward on paper.

A hatchback can be easier to place in a tight parking space than an SUV, but this article does not have comparable measurements or ownership-cost data to declare it superior. Decide based on your parking constraints, passenger needs and preferred driving position, then verify which petrol variants are available in your city.

Consider i20 only after selecting a qualifying lower variant

Hyundai lists i20 at ₹5.99–10.63 lakh. Because the range crosses ₹10 lakh, it is inaccurate to describe the entire i20 line as a sub-₹10-lakh car. Only the lower-priced petrol variants can qualify; higher trims are outside the stated ceiling.

When requesting a quote, write the exact variant name on the enquiry and ask the dealer to show its ex-showroom price separately from every optional package. Do not rely on an “i20 from” advertisement if the configuration you want is priced above the limit.

Evaluate Venue as a variant-specific SUV choice

Hyundai’s homepage lists Venue from ₹7,99,900 and identifies a 1.2-litre petrol engine among several powertrains. The starting price establishes that at least one Venue configuration begins below ₹10 lakh, but it does not prove that every petrol trim or transmission does.

Ask for a quote that states fuel type, engine, transmission and variant code. If the quote is for a diesel or another powertrain, it does not answer a petrol-only requirement. If the desired automatic configuration exceeds the ceiling, compare it with the Exter AMT before increasing your budget.

Use Gravite and Magnite Kuro as leads that require verification

Nissan’s official price page lists a Gravite variant at ₹6,68,400. It also lists Magnite Kuro variants from ₹7,85,000 to ₹9,99,400. Those figures are useful starting points, but the retrieved listing does not provide a complete fuel-and-transmission comparison or confirm the city basis in the same detail.

Before treating either as an eligible petrol purchase, have the dealer or Nissan’s current configurator confirm four items in writing: petrol fuel, exact variant, transmission and ex-showroom price for your city. The upper end of the Magnite Kuro listing is only ₹600 below ₹10 lakh, leaving almost no room for a price revision or a different city price while remaining under the ex-showroom ceiling.

How to make a defensible shortlist

“Best” depends on the trade-off you are making. The available evidence cannot support a market-wide ranking on safety, mileage, cabin dimensions, boot space, warranty, service costs, resale or equipment. Use the following sequence to turn the shortlist into a decision that matches your needs without assuming missing data.

1. Set the price basis and a practical buffer

Write down whether ₹10 lakh is your ex-showroom limit or your total on-road limit. The figures in this article use ex-showroom pricing. If ₹10 lakh is your on-road maximum, start with a substantially lower ex-showroom target and obtain a local calculation; the exact buffer depends on your state, insurance selection and registration charges.

2. Select the body style you actually need

  • SUV-shaped options: Exter and Venue are the Hyundai examples identified as SUVs. Gravite and Magnite Kuro need current confirmation of their exact configuration and body-style details for your quote.
  • Hatchbacks: Grand i10 Nios and i20 are identified as hatchbacks.
  • Space and access: Do not infer seating comfort or luggage capacity from the word “SUV” or “hatchback.” Sit in the front and rear seats, load the items you normally carry and check the driving position during a test drive.

3. Decide whether you need a manual or automatic

The Exter is explicitly listed with manual and AMT availability. For Venue, the 1.2-litre petrol is identified, but the retrieved material does not establish which transmission is paired with each qualifying trim. Nissan’s listed prices likewise require a transmission check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An AMT is an automated manual transmission; it is not interchangeable with every other type of automatic. Ask for the exact transmission name on the quotation and test-drive it in stop-and-go traffic. If you are comfortable with a manual, more lower-priced variants may remain available; if you require an automatic, confirm that the automatic petrol trim itself stays under the ceiling.

4. Verify safety and ownership evidence separately

No comparable safety scores, crash-test results, real-world fuel-economy figures, service schedules or ownership-cost data were established for all models in this shortlist. Obtain current, model-and-variant-specific information from the manufacturer and recognised testing or regulatory sources before ranking one car above another.

Ask each dealer for the scheduled service intervals and a written estimate for routine maintenance. Compare insurance quotes using the same coverage and deductible. For resale, seek local transaction evidence rather than assuming that a higher-priced or SUV-shaped model will retain more value.

5. Check availability, not just a web price

Prices and model availability can change. A listed variant may be temporarily unavailable, replaced by a new trim or priced differently in your registration city. Confirm the stock status, manufacturing month, waiting period and validity date of the quote. If the dealer substitutes a different variant, repeat the eligibility check from the beginning.

Exact steps to verify a car before booking

  1. Open the current manufacturer model or price page. Select your city or nearest available city and note whether the figure is ex-showroom. Save the page or quotation date.
  2. Choose the fuel and transmission first. Select petrol, then the required manual or automatic type. Do not assume that the cheapest model price represents the petrol automatic you want.
  3. Record the full variant name. Include edition names such as Kuro where applicable. A model name alone is not enough when the price band crosses ₹10 lakh.
  4. Compare the displayed ex-showroom figure with ₹10,00,000. If it is above the limit, remove that variant even if the model’s starting price is below it.
  5. Request an itemised city quotation. It should separate ex-showroom price, registration, insurance, taxes, dealer charges, accessories and any discount. Ask how long the quote remains valid.
  6. Check the vehicle in person. Confirm the engine and transmission on the vehicle identification documents, inspect the build date and take a test drive on the roads you use.
  7. Recalculate after every change. Accessories, a different colour, an automatic transmission or a higher trim can alter the price and invalidate your original eligibility.

Common mistakes that make a “sub-₹10-lakh” choice inaccurate

Confusing a model range with a qualifying variant

The i20 range of ₹5.99–10.63 lakh demonstrates the problem: some variants qualify and others do not. Tata Punch is another example cited by Autocar India; its displayed range extends beyond ₹10 lakh. Always publish or compare the exact eligible variant rather than labelling the whole model under the limit.

Treating a starting price as an automatic recommendation

A “from ₹7,99,900” Venue listing confirms a starting point, not the price of every petrol configuration. The same caution applies to any model whose cheapest version uses a different fuel or transmission from the one you intend to buy.

Using an ex-showroom figure as an on-road promise

Ex-showroom prices exclude location-dependent costs. Even a car listed below ₹10 lakh can produce an on-road invoice above that amount. Ask for a local quote before arranging finance or setting a monthly-payment target.

Assuming a category page is a complete market census

Autocar India’s petrol-cars-under-₹10-lakh category page shows 50 models and includes examples such as Tata Punch and Maruti Suzuki Dzire. That count is the page’s category total, not an independently verified census of every currently saleable petrol variant. Use such pages to discover candidates, then verify each candidate with current official pricing.

Filling missing comparisons with assumptions

There is no reliable apples-to-apples evidence here for safety, mileage, dimensions, boot space, warranty, service cost, resale or equipment across the field. Do not turn an unsupported assumption into a ranking. Mark a value as “not established” and obtain a current primary source if that factor decides your purchase.

A practical decision path

If you want the clearest evidence-backed choice

Start with Exter or Grand i10 Nios. Their listed Hyundai ranges remain below ₹10 lakh, reducing the risk that your selected variant is automatically disqualified. Choose between the SUV body style and the hatchback body style, then decide manual versus AMT where Exter is concerned.

If you want a larger Hyundai hatchback

Investigate i20’s lower variants only. Put the exact trim on the quote and reject any configuration above ₹10 lakh ex-showroom. Do not use the model’s minimum price to justify a higher trim.

If you want a Venue

Confirm that the exact 1.2-litre petrol variant and transmission you want are under the limit in your city. The homepage starting price is a lead, not a complete petrol-variant price list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want a Nissan-listed option

Use the ₹6,68,400 Gravite listing or the ₹7,85,000–9,99,400 Magnite Kuro listings as enquiry points. Confirm fuel, transmission, city and current validity before comparing them with Hyundai models.

What the available evidence does—and does not—prove

It establishes that several petrol candidates have at least one listed configuration below ₹10 lakh ex-showroom, and it shows why eligibility must be checked at variant level. It does not establish a definitive “best” ranking for all petrol cars in India. A complete ranking would require a current, cross-brand matrix with identical fields for every eligible variant, including safety evidence, ownership costs, space, equipment, transmission and local pricing.

For that reason, the most honest shortlist is conditional: Exter and Grand i10 Nios are the clearest published fits; lower i20 variants, selected Venue petrol trims, Gravite and Magnite Kuro variants may fit after verification; and models such as Punch or Dzire require the same variant-and-city check rather than a blanket label.
