1. W124 500 E and E 500: the greatest overall
Why the 500 E changed the E-Class
The 500 E arrived in 1990 as the first V8 in E-Class history. Mercedes-Benz records 240 kW (326 PS) and says the car was assembled in cooperation with Porsche. The E 60 AMG is a specialist choice. Its rarity and 280 kW (381 PS) figure make it compelling, but the same exclusivity narrows the audience. Do not treat the W211 E 55 AMG as a simple replacement for the 500 E. The W124 wins on first-generation significance, restrained classic design and the Porsche cooperation story. The W211 wins on its 350 kW (476 PS) historical output and its position as the 2002 range-topper. Which is “better” depends on whether the buyer values pioneering status or later performance capability.
4. W212 E 63 AMG: the modern-output milestone
The 2009 performance step
The W212 E 63 AMG arrived in 2009, and Mercedes-Benz records 386 kW (525 PS) in its historical overview. That makes it a clear modern-era milestone and the most powerful sedan in this ranking by the stated figures. For a driver who puts later-generation capability ahead of classic provenance, the W212 is the logical winner. It offers the strongest documented output among the listed sedans and a more recent interpretation of the E-Class performance formula. It is not ranked above the W124 because power alone does not settle an editorial “greatest” question; the W124’s historical role is broader.
What the evidence does—and does not—prove
The 386 kW (525 PS) figure supports a comparison of period output. It does not establish that every W212 is faster in every situation, cheaper to operate, more reliable or universally preferable to a W211. 5. W210 E 50 AMG and E 55 AMG: the bridge generation

Why an estate belongs in a greatest-E-Class list
“Greatest” should not mean sedan-only. Mercedes-Benz records a maximum load volume of 1,975 litres for the W210 estate. That figure gives the body style a concrete advantage for families, touring, equipment transport and anyone who needs the E-Class concept to do more than carry four adults and luggage in a conventional boot.

The estate also shows how the E-Class’s importance lies in its range of body styles. A high-performance sedan may be the enthusiast’s emotional favourite, but an estate can be the most successful answer to everyday constraints. The W210 estate therefore earns a place on usefulness, not because its cargo figure proves superior dynamics or reliability.

Mercedes-Benz publishes a 2008 W211 E-Class saloon owner’s manual, but that does not make it suitable for every W211 variant or every market.
