There is no single Japanese six-cylinder engine that the available evidence establishes as both currently in production and reliably proven. Toyota’s historic 1JZ and 2JZ engines are often part of this conversation, but Toyota’s own records document them as historical engines, not current production units. A current Toyota model listing and an older Supra launch announcement establish model and configuration context, not the origin or reliability of the precise engine offered today.
What “still in production” can—and cannot—mean
A six-cylinder engine may appear in a current model without the available evidence establishing that its engine family is still being manufactured, where it is manufactured, or who designed it. Those are separate questions. A current model-year listing shows that a vehicle is in the lineup; it is not an engine-production record.
Toyota’s North American newsroom index identifies the GR Supra in its model-year 2026 lineup. Toyota’s 2019 Supra launch announcement describes that launch-era car as having a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six. Because those sources are from different dates, and the 2019 announcement does not establish the precise 2026 specification or engine origin, they do not prove that a Toyota-designed inline-six remains in production today. Lineups and powertrains may also differ by market. Toyota’s newsroom model-year index and the 2019 Supra announcement are useful starting points, but check the current market-specific technical sheet for a particular car.
Are the Toyota 1JZ and 2JZ still being made?
Toyota’s archive documents the 1JZ and 2JZ as historical JZ-family inline-six engines; it does not establish that either engine is currently manufactured. The company’s archived Chaser specifications identify the 2JZ-GE as a 2,997 cc water-cooled, longitudinal DOHC inline-six and the 1JZ-GE as a 2,491 cc engine of the same broad configuration. Toyota says Chaser production ended in June 2001. That date applies to the vehicle, not necessarily to the entire JZ engine family. Toyota’s Chaser archive and its historical JZ family index provide context, not evidence of present-day manufacture.

Toyota’s technical chronology records VVT-i adoption in the 2JZ-GE in September 1995 and the development of the 2JZ-FSE in October 1999. These dates describe technical milestones; they say nothing on their own about failure rates or long-term dependability. Toyota’s technical chronology is the source for those historical developments.
What would prove an engine is reliable?
Specifications, a manufacturer’s reputation, and an engine’s popularity among enthusiasts do not establish reliability. For the engine meant by this broad title, the available official material supplies no attributable failure rate, long-term fleet study, warranty-claim rate, or reliability ranking. It also contains no direct manufacturer statement calling the engine reliable.

A useful reliability comparison needs an exact engine code and vehicle-market context, plus evidence with a defined population, time period, and failure measure. Engine-specific data are more informative about an engine than vehicle-wide data, which can reflect transmissions, electronics, chassis components, or other systems. Without that evidence, a categorical claim that a candidate engine is “reliable” goes beyond what is established.
How to assess a specific six-cylinder candidate
Before treating any Japanese six-cylinder as a current, reliable choice, establish these points for the exact vehicle you are considering:

- Engine identity: Get the engine code and confirm whether it is an inline-six or V6. “Six-cylinder” alone is not specific enough.
- Market and model year: Verify the official specification for the country and model year. A model available in one region may not be sold with the same engine elsewhere.
- Production status: Separate an engine’s presence in a listed vehicle from evidence that the engine itself is still being manufactured.
- Configuration and application: Check whether the engine is naturally aspirated or turbocharged and which vehicle version it powers; do not assume one version’s record applies to another.
- Reliability evidence: Look for data that identify the affected vehicles or engines, years covered, failure measure, and whether findings concern the engine or the whole vehicle.
How recalls fit into the reliability question
A recall notice identifies a defined safety issue and the affected vehicles; it is not, by itself, a reliability ranking for an engine family. Check recalls by vehicle identification number (VIN), read the stated population and remedy, and distinguish a vehicle-specific safety action from evidence about every version of an engine. Toyota provides VIN-based recall lookup and remedy information. A dealer can address an applicable recall, but the result for one VIN should not be generalized to all vehicles using a similarly named engine.
