Which Japanese hybrid SUV gets the best gas mileage in 2025?
The available U.S. ratings establish two useful conventional-hybrid comparison points, but they do not cover every Japanese brand, SUV classification, trim, and drivetrain consistently enough to identify an overall leader. Honda lists the 2025 CR-V Sport Hybrid at 37 MPG combined, while Lexus lists the 2025 NX 350h AWD at 39 MPG combined. Is the Honda CR-V Hybrid more fuel-efficient than the Lexus NX 350h?
It depends on which comparison you mean. On the published combined figures above, the NX 350h is rated at 39 MPG and the CR-V Sport Hybrid at 37 MPG. Honda also gives city and highway ratings for the CR-V: 40 city and 34 highway MPG. The Lexus source cited here does not give comparable city and highway numbers, so those should not be inferred or presented as a complete side-by-side breakdown.
Does AWD lower hybrid SUV MPG?
Not in Honda’s listed 2025 CR-V Sport Hybrid ratings: Honda reports 40 city, 34 highway, and 37 combined MPG for both 2WD and AWD. That is a model-specific published comparison, not a rule for every hybrid SUV. Check the exact model year, trim, and drivetrain when comparing other vehicles.

Should plug-in hybrid MPGe count in an MPG ranking?
No—not in a ranking of conventional hybrids by gasoline MPG. The 2025 Lexus NX 450h+ is a plug-in hybrid, and Lexus reports 37 miles of electric range and 84 combined MPGe. MPGe accounts for electricity as well as fuel, so it is not directly comparable with the NX 350h’s gasoline MPG. How to compare 2025 hybrid SUV fuel economy fairly
- Use the same market and model year. The figures here are U.S. 2025 model-year ratings.
- Compare conventional hybrids by combined MPG. Use city and highway ratings as supporting context when both are published.
- Name the configuration. Record the trim and whether it is 2WD/FWD or AWD; do not assume one drivetrain’s rating applies to another.
- Keep plug-in hybrids separate. Report electric range and MPGe separately from a conventional hybrid’s gasoline MPG.
- Check the category boundary. SUV and crossover labels are not always applied consistently. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center lists the NX 350h AWD as an SUV but classifies the UX 300h as sedan/wagon, so silently counting every small crossover can change what a purported SUV ranking includes. What EPA combined MPG does—and does not—tell you
The U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2025 Fuel Economy Guide calculates combined fuel economy using 55% city driving and 45% highway driving. It is a standardized basis for comparison, not a promise of a particular driver’s mileage. Weather, driving style, traffic, terrain, vehicle load, air-conditioning use, and vehicle condition can all affect observed mileage.
