The Nissan Figaro is a real production car, not a Tokyo Motor Show fantasy: Nissan introduced the FK10 in 1991 as a limited-run, retro-styled personal coupe with a dedicated open-top mechanism. Its charming looks come with an important qualification: it is now a decades-old specialist car, so anyone considering one should weigh its character against the practical realities of maintenance and parts sourcing.
What is the Nissan Figaro?
The Figaro was the fourth car in Nissan’s Pike series, following the Be-1, PAO and S-Cargo. Nissan says the FK10 appeared at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show and launched in 1991, with production limited to 20,000 cars. The manufacturer described it as a “2-door coupe just for yourself.” Nissan’s heritage record documents its history and production volume.
Rather than imitate a specific classic car, the Figaro presents a deliberately nostalgic design in a compact, contemporary-for-its-time package. Nissan called the concept “Tokyo Nouvelle Vague,” and says a short film project, “FIGARO STORY,” accompanied it. The four original colors were Emerald, Pale Aqua, Lapis Gray and Topaz Mist.
What makes its design unusual?
A purpose-built open top
The Figaro’s defining feature is its dedicated open-top mechanism. It is not simply a conventional coupe with a removable panel: Nissan designed the roof as a central part of the car’s identity. The maker also highlighted the white leather interior and specially designed instruments, details that extend the retro treatment into the cabin. Nissan’s description of the Figaro identifies these features; it does not establish modern standards for comfort, safety or reliability.

Small-car dimensions, distinctive proportions
The Figaro measures 3,740 mm long, 1,630 mm wide and 1,365 mm high, with a 2,300 mm wheelbase. Those compact dimensions help explain its city-car scale, while the dedicated roof and carefully styled cabin give it the presence of a personal coupe rather than an ordinary economy car.

What should owners know about parts and documentation?
Parts support is not all-or-nothing. The Figaro Owners Club says many, but not all, parts can still be obtained, and identifies specialist suppliers and dealers for parts, repairs, restoration and servicing. Availability can depend on the exact component, market and supplier, so check before assuming a repair is straightforward. The club’s services directory is a starting point for finding support.

Documentation is available through more than one route. The club lists original service and roof-instruction documentation, as well as third-party English-language owner and workshop manuals. It also describes a 168-page parts catalogue that is no longer available from Nissan, while noting that some parts may still be sourced through Nissan dealers or other outlets. Confirm the edition and current availability directly with a seller or supplier before relying on a manual or catalogue. See the club’s manuals and documentation page.

Is the Figaro a realistic modern-car alternative?
No: it is best understood as a distinctive early-1990s specialist vehicle, not as a new-car substitute. Its appeal is unusually concrete—the Pike-car lineage, compact proportions, turbocharged 987 cc engine and purpose-designed open top—but ownership calls for model-specific documentation and a plan for servicing and parts. The manufacturer’s historic specifications tell you what the car was; they do not establish its condition, current safety equipment, local registration or import eligibility, or the cost of buying and maintaining one today.
