Hi-Lander: the under-budget candidate to check first
What the official specification says
Isuzu’s Hi-Lander product page describes an all-rounder pickup with five seats, rear-wheel-drive (2WD) and a 1,898 cc common-rail VGS turbo-intercooled diesel engine. The manufacturer lists 163 hp and 360 Nm, with a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic configuration. The body is 5,295 mm long, rides on a 3,095 mm wheelbase and has a 55-litre fuel tank. The listed tyre size is 245/70 R16.

The ₹21,19,900 amount was an announced starting price, ex-showroom Chennai, in Isuzu’s release dated 2 May 2024. “Ex-showroom” excludes registration, road tax, insurance, handling or other charges that may appear in a final invoice. V-Cross: capable alternative, but not proven under this budget
The V-Cross page lists the same 1,898 cc diesel family, 163 hp and 360 Nm, and a five-seat cabin. Its range is broader in drivetrain terms: the page describes 2WD automatic variants and shift-on-the-fly 4WD versions with manual or automatic transmissions, depending on trim. Isuzu positions it around adventure use and passenger comfort.

The 2 May 2024 Chennai release listed V-Cross Z from ₹25,51,700 and V-Cross Z Prestige from ₹26,91,700, both ex-showroom. Those named trims therefore do not meet a ₹25 lakh ceiling on that dated evidence. The current V-Cross price page does not provide a published figure that would let you prove a different trim is under the limit today.
If you specifically need four-wheel drive, ask the dealer for the current V-Cross variant, its ex-showroom amount and the complete on-road calculation. Do not assume that a lower trim, a discount or a used vehicle is available unless it is shown in a current written offer.

Why D-MAX is not part of the passenger-car shortlist
Isuzu’s D-MAX brochure describes the D-MAX as a commercial vehicle. It states that the vehicle can be registered only as a commercial vehicle in India and refers to a valid Light Commercial Vehicle licence or other requirements under applicable state norms and the Motor Vehicles Act.

That distinction matters even if the purchase price appears attractive. Commercial registration, taxation, insurance, permitted use and driver-licence rules can differ from those for a private passenger pickup. The applicable requirement depends on the state and the vehicle’s registration treatment, so confirm it with the relevant authority and the dealer before paying a booking amount. A D-MAX should not be presented as a private passenger “car under ₹25 lakh” without resolving those legal and use restrictions.
How to decide whether a Hi-Lander suits your use
Choose it for pickup utility and five-seat travel
The Hi-Lander combines a five-seat passenger cabin with an open bed. That layout is useful when you regularly carry dirty, bulky or outdoor equipment separately from passengers. It can also suit a buyer who wants a high-riding lifestyle pickup without moving to the V-Cross price points cited above.
The bed is not the same as a lockable SUV boot. The Hi-Lander specification is 2WD. That is the key mechanical distinction from V-Cross variants that offer shift-on-the-fly 4WD. For paved roads, highways and ordinary unsealed tracks, 2WD may be the simpler choice. If your planned use includes regular mud, sand, steep loose surfaces or remote trails, ask whether the vehicle’s drivetrain is appropriate rather than assuming a pickup’s appearance means it has four-wheel drive.

Both six-speed manual and six-speed automatic configurations are listed for the Hi-Lander.
