For a UK buyer, start with the Hyundai BAYON’s transmission rather than the trim. The current Hyundai Motor UK range uses a 1.0-litre T-GDi petrol engine rated at 90 PS, with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Choose the manual if you prefer direct gear selection and a conventional clutch; choose the DCT if you want automatic-style operation. Then select equipment: Black Line covers the key comfort and parking upgrades, while Tech Line adds higher-end items such as a Bose sound system, blind-spot collision warning, a smart key, wireless charging and a glass electric sunroof.
That answer applies to the UK specification only. Hyundai Motor Europe lists different BAYON grades—Base (L), Entry (GL), Mid (GLS) and Top—and publishes examples of a 1.0 T-GDi 100 PS and a 1.2 MPi 79 PS. Do not use the European names or outputs to order a UK car. Check the live UK configurator or an authorised retailer for the exact engine, gearbox and equipment combination available when you buy.

What is the best BAYON choice in the UK?
The most sensible UK buying sequence is:
- Choose manual or DCT. Your daily traffic, parking routine and preference for changing gear matter more than a trim badge.
- List the equipment you will actually use. Black Line includes several practical upgrades; Tech Line is aimed at buyers who specifically want its additional driver-assistance, convenience and comfort features.
- Check the exact build. Hyundai states that features and options can vary by trim and that specifications may change. The UK model page and trim page do not establish that every gearbox is available with every trim, so confirm the pairing before placing an order.
There is no evidence in the published UK material that one transmission is universally cheaper to run or more economical in real-world driving. Treat the gearbox as a usability decision, not a guaranteed fuel-saving choice.
Which BAYON engine and gearbox should you choose?
UK engine: 1.0-litre T-GDi, 90 PS
Hyundai Motor UK currently describes one BAYON engine: a turbocharged 1.0-litre T-GDi petrol producing 90 PS. It can be specified with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DCT. The UK page identifies the engine and transmissions but does not publish a complete matrix showing which gearbox is paired with each trim, so verify your intended configuration in the current BAYON model page and configurator.

Six-speed manual: choose it for control and familiarity
The manual is the straightforward choice if you enjoy selecting gears, want a familiar clutch pedal, or regularly drive where you prefer to hold a gear yourself. It also avoids having to adapt to the response of a dual-clutch system at very low speeds. Those are driver-preference points, not claims that the manual is cheaper or more reliable; the supplied UK information does not provide ownership-cost or durability comparisons.
Seven-speed DCT: choose it for automatic-style driving
The seven-speed DCT is the alternative for drivers who want two-pedal operation in queues, town traffic and repeated stop-start journeys. A dual-clutch gearbox is not the same mechanical design as a traditional torque-converter automatic, so take a test drive that includes parking manoeuvres, hill starts and slow crawling. Check that the gearbox response suits you before ordering rather than assuming every automatic will feel identical.
Is the BAYON automatic worth it?
It is worth paying for the DCT when reducing clutch work is a priority and you are comfortable with its low-speed behaviour. It is less compelling if you actively prefer manual involvement or rarely encounter congestion. The available evidence does not support a blanket statement that the DCT delivers better fuel economy, lower servicing costs or a lower purchase price in the UK. Ask the retailer for the current price difference, warranty terms and scheduled-maintenance requirements for the exact vehicle.

Black Line versus Tech Line: what do you get?
Hyundai Motor UK lists two BAYON trims on its current trim page: Black Line and Tech Line. The following equipment is the published distinction, but individual options and standard features can change. Confirm the specification for your order at Hyundai’s UK trims and prices page and in the configurator.
| UK trim | Published equipment examples | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Black Line | Climate control; front parking sensors; 17-inch alloy wheels; privacy glass; heated front seats; heated steering wheel. | Buyers who want the major comfort, styling and parking upgrades without Tech Line’s premium convenience and audio equipment. |
| Tech Line | Includes additional equipment such as a Bose premium sound system, blind-spot collision warning, smart key, wireless charging and a glass electric sunroof. | Drivers who will use the extra driver-awareness, keyless convenience, phone-charging, premium-audio and open-roof features. |
When Black Line is the better buy
Black Line is the rational stopping point if your priorities are climate control, heated contact points, easier parking and the 17-inch wheels, and you do not care about a premium audio system or a panoramic-style roof. Front parking sensors are particularly useful if your regular spaces are tight, but test the sensor layout and camera equipment on the actual car because the published list does not describe every parking aid.
When Tech Line justifies its place
Tech Line makes sense when several of its additions solve daily annoyances rather than when you want a higher badge. Blind-spot collision warning can be relevant to frequent motorway or multi-lane driving; a smart key helps when your hands are full; wireless charging reduces cable use; and the Bose system matters only if audio quality is a priority. The glass electric sunroof is a comfort and ambience feature, so inspect its headroom, shade operation and cleaning requirements during the test drive.

Do not assume trim equipment transfers between markets
Black Line and Tech Line are UK names. Hyundai Motor Europe’s BAYON material uses a different hierarchy—Base (L), Entry (GL), Mid (GLS) and Top. A feature shown on a European page should not be treated as standard on a UK car, and a UK trim name should not be used to negotiate a vehicle in another country.
A step-by-step way to configure your car
- Set your market and model year. Start on the UK BAYON pages, not a cached specification from another country. Record the date you configure the car because Hyundai says published specifications can change.
- Drive both transmissions if both are offered with your chosen trim. Include a cold start, a steep ramp, a parking manoeuvre and slow traffic. Note clutch effort for the manual and low-speed take-up for the DCT.
- Write a must-have list. Separate safety or visibility features from nice-to-have items. For example, blind-spot collision warning may be a priority for motorway users, while a glass sunroof may have no value to a buyer who parks outside in winter.
- Compare the live trim price difference. Use the current UK trim-and-price page and ask for an itemised quote. Do not infer a value from an older review or a different country’s list price.
- Verify the powertrain-trim pairing. The published UK model information confirms the 90 PS engine and two transmissions but does not confirm that every combination can be ordered. Have the retailer identify the exact engine, gearbox, trim and standard equipment on the order form.
- Check factory options and colours separately. An item can be trim-dependent, optional or unavailable with a particular gearbox. Request written confirmation rather than relying on a salesperson’s generic brochure.
- Review the final vehicle specification before signing. Match the vehicle identification and order description against the configurator printout. Recheck wheels, sensors, charging hardware, roof and seat-heating details.
What European buyers may see instead
Hyundai Motor Europe publishes a different set of engines and test figures. These data describe the European page and should not be substituted for UK specifications.
| European example | Transmission | Published WLTP fuel consumption | Published WLTP CO₂ |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0 T-GDi, 100 PS | 6MT | 5.7–5.4 l/100 km | 129–122 g/km |
| 1.0 T-GDi, 100 PS | 7DCT | 6.7–6.2 l/100 km | 128–122 g/km |
| 1.2 MPi, 79 PS | Not stated on the cited line | 5.7–5.5 l/100 km | 131–126 g/km |
The figures above are Hyundai Motor Europe’s WLTP ranges, not independent road tests or promises of the fuel economy you will achieve. They vary across versions and test conditions. The European trim page names Base (L), Entry (GL), Mid (GLS) and Top; those labels are not evidence of equivalent UK grades. See Hyundai Motor Europe’s BAYON trims page and its features and engine figures for the market-specific listing.

Fuel economy, emissions and ownership-cost questions
For the UK decision, the available official pages do not provide a robust current comparison of real-world economy, servicing cost, insurance or depreciation between the manual and DCT. A quoted WLTP number from another market cannot answer those questions because the engine outputs, equipment, wheels, regulations and test configuration may differ.
Ask for three separate figures before committing: the on-the-road price of the exact gearbox and trim, the scheduled-service plan for that specification, and the official economy and emissions values printed on the UK vehicle documentation. Keep those figures attached to the quote so a later trim or wheel change does not silently alter the comparison.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Using a European engine listing to order a UK car
A 100 PS 1.0 T-GDi or 79 PS 1.2 MPi shown on a European page does not establish UK availability. Ask for a UK order code and the engine output in writing.

Assuming Tech Line automatically includes every desired feature
Trim names are not permanent equipment contracts. Hyundai’s UK feature page warns that equipment can vary and specifications can change. Check each item—especially safety systems, charging, roof and audio—on the current build sheet at the UK BAYON features page.
Choosing a DCT without a low-speed test
A short motorway drive can hide the behaviour that matters most in a dual-clutch car. Spend time in a car park and queueing traffic, and try reversing uphill if possible.
Paying for equipment you cannot use
Price Tech Line only after identifying which additions you value. If you never use wireless charging, premium audio or a sunroof, Black Line may deliver the practical features you want at a lower trim level—subject to the current local price difference.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhich specification fits different drivers?
- Mostly urban, dislike clutch work: test the seven-speed DCT first, then select the lowest trim that includes your essential parking and comfort equipment.
- Enjoy driving and want direct control: choose the six-speed manual and spend the trim budget on features you will use rather than assuming a higher grade improves the gearbox.
- Frequent motorway user: investigate Tech Line’s blind-spot collision warning and smart key, but confirm the exact systems and settings on the demonstrator.
- Audio and cabin ambience enthusiast: Tech Line’s Bose system and glass electric sunroof are the relevant additions; test both in daylight and at night before ordering.
- Value-focused buyer: compare the live Black Line and Tech Line prices item by item, including any wheel or option changes, and retain the written specification.
Final buying verdict
For the UK BAYON, there is no single “best” engine because the current range centres on one 1.0-litre T-GDi 90 PS engine. The meaningful choice is the six-speed manual versus the seven-speed DCT, followed by whether Black Line’s practical equipment is enough or Tech Line’s audio, driver-awareness, access, charging and sunroof features earn the additional cost. Confirm availability, pricing and every item on the current Hyundai UK configurator or with a local retailer before you sign; European engines, trim names and WLTP figures are market-specific and should not be blended into a UK order.
