No—not every Hyundai or Kia vehicle with a 12.3-inch screen is receiving wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The screen size is not the deciding factor. Wireless phone projection depends on the vehicle’s model year, market, trim, infotainment head unit, and software platform.

Selected newer Hyundai and Kia systems—especially vehicles using the Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) platform—already offer wireless Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay from the factory. Some older Display Audio Gen2V systems received software improvements that broaden wireless-phone compatibility. Other 12.3-inch systems may remain wired, even after an update.
To find out what applies to your car, identify the exact vehicle and head unit, then check the official Hyundai update portal or Kia update portal by VIN or vehicle type. Do not choose an update—or assume that a wireless adapter will work—based only on the display’s size.

What the 12.3-inch wireless-update news actually means
Hyundai and Kia use several generations of infotainment hardware. A 12.3-inch display can be paired with a navigation system, display-audio system, or a newer ccNC unit. Those systems do not necessarily share the same wireless capabilities.
The most important categories are:
- Newer ccNC systems: Many offer wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard factory features, although exact equipment still varies by vehicle, market, and model year.
- Eligible Display Audio Gen2V systems: A June 21, 2024 software update for selected Hyundai and Kia systems improved wireless phone-projection compatibility. This is an improvement for eligible systems, not a universal conversion for every 12.3-inch navigation unit.
- Older or different navigation systems: Some may support only wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. A software update may improve an existing function without adding wireless projection.
The defensible conclusion is therefore: some Hyundai and Kia infotainment systems support, or have gained improved support for, wireless phone projection—but the 12.3-inch screen itself does not prove compatibility.
Which newer Hyundai and Kia systems support wireless projection?
Recent manufacturer material shows that wireless projection is increasingly common on ccNC-equipped vehicles, but the feature should still be verified for the specific vehicle and region.

What changed in the 2024 Gen2V update?
On June 21, 2024, Hyundai announced a Display Audio software update for Display Audio Gen2V systems. The update improved compatibility so wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay could work with a wider range of phones. Kia published a corresponding U.S. notice for its eligible Gen2V systems.

That wording matters. The notices support the following narrower claim:
- An eligible Gen2V system may receive improved wireless phone projection through software.
- The update must match the vehicle, model year, head unit, and region.
- The update does not establish that every Hyundai or Kia 12.3-inch navigation system can be changed from wired to wireless.
Before downloading anything, read the official Hyundai Gen2V update notice or Kia Gen2V update notice. Hyundai specifically warns owners to select the correct model and model year, use the officially distributed update file, and install it from a FAT32-formatted USB drive. Hyundai also says the software cannot be rolled back after installation.

- Record the vehicle details. Note the make, model, model year, trim, country or region, and whether the car has navigation. If possible, record the infotainment software version and head-unit name from the system-information screen.
- Use the correct regional update site. U.S. owners should start with Hyundai’s or Kia’s U.S. update portal. Search by VIN when available; otherwise search by vehicle type and carefully match the model year.
- Identify the system generation. Look for references to ccNC, Display Audio Gen2V, navigation, or display audio in the vehicle information and update results. Do not infer the system generation from the display measurement.
- Read the update’s feature list. Confirm that the notice specifically mentions wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, or wireless phone-projection compatibility. A map, navigation, stability, or general multimedia update may not add wireless projection.
- Check the phone requirements. Wireless projection requires a compatible phone, current operating system, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and—depending on the phone and vehicle—cellular data service.
- Install only the matching official update. If the portal shows no eligible wireless-projection update, treat the factory system as wired unless the owner’s manual or vehicle specification explicitly says otherwise.
Installing a Hyundai or Kia USB infotainment update
Some eligible systems update over the air; others require a manual USB installation. The exact screens and sequence vary by vehicle, so the vehicle-specific instructions take priority.
Before starting
- Use the official update file downloaded from the correct regional Hyundai or Kia portal.
- Use a compatible USB drive formatted as FAT32 where the instructions require it. A FAT32-compatible USB flash drive can be useful for this task, but storage brand is less important than using the correct file system and update package.
- Confirm that the file is for the exact model, model year, and infotainment system.
- Allow enough time for the installation and follow the vehicle’s power and parking instructions.
- Do not remove the USB drive or interrupt power while the system is updating unless the official instructions tell you to do so.
Hyundai’s notice warns that software cannot be rolled back after installation. Kia’s instructions likewise direct owners through a compatible USB-based installation. If the portal or vehicle instructions differ from generic USB advice, follow the official procedure for that vehicle.
Over-the-air updates
Hyundai says eligible vehicles can receive navigation and multimedia software through Bluelink OTA updates. The update may download in the background and become available for installation after the vehicle is turned off. Eligibility depends on the compatible infotainment system, available update, cellular connectivity, and—in applicable cases—an active Bluelink service. Behavior varies by model, software version, and system conditions. See Hyundai’s OTA update guidance.

On a Hyundai ccNC system, the owner’s manual gives this general sequence:
- Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the Android phone.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth-device list and select the vehicle.
- Confirm that the verification code on the phone matches the code on the vehicle screen.
- Approve the Android Auto prompts on the phone.
- Select Android Auto from the vehicle’s home screen.
The Hyundai ccNC manual notes that an unstable connection may require generating a new Wi-Fi passkey. If pairing succeeds but Android Auto does not appear, check that Wi-Fi is enabled, remove the vehicle from the phone’s saved Bluetooth devices, delete the phone from the vehicle, restart both devices, and pair again.
How to pair wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on Kia
Kia’s comparable setup path is generally:
- Open SETUP on the infotainment screen.
- Select DEVICE CONNECTIONS.
- Select ADD NEW.
- Choose the phone and approve the pairing and projection prompts.
Kia’s feature guidance says wireless Apple CarPlay requires an iPhone with cellular data service. Wireless Android Auto works with certain Android models and also requires cellular data service. Keeping the phone’s operating system current is recommended. See Kia’s 2026 K4 feature guide for the documented setup guidance.
What if the system still only works with a USB cable?
If the official vehicle search shows no wireless feature and the car launches Android Auto or Apple CarPlay only when connected by cable, the factory system may be wired-only. In that case, a wireless CarPlay/Android Auto adapter may be a practical fallback—but it is not an OEM software conversion.

Before buying a wireless CarPlay and Android Auto adapter, verify all of the following:
- The vehicle already supports wired Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, or both. Most adapters depend on that existing function.
- The adapter supports your phone and the projection platform you use.
- The vehicle has the required USB data port, not merely a charging port.
- The adapter’s instructions list your infotainment system or vehicle as compatible.
- You accept possible startup delays, occasional reconnection problems, extra clutter, and the fact that compatibility can change after phone or vehicle updates.
This is the right solution category for a wired-compatible Hyundai or Kia that lacks native wireless projection. It is unnecessary for a ccNC vehicle that already provides reliable wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and it cannot be assumed to work with every 12.3-inch head unit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Regional and model-year cautions
Software is not interchangeable simply because two vehicles have the same brand, screen size, or name. Hyundai and Kia publish separate regional catalogs, and update packages can be region-specific.
For example, a February 9, 2026 Hyundai regional notice describes faster wireless reconnection, automatic return to CarPlay or Android Auto after restarting the vehicle, and automatic screen switching for ccNC vehicles in that region. A Kia European notice from the same date describes similar improvements for applicable ccNC-equipped vehicle families, including the facelifted Sorento, facelifted EV6, facelifted Sportage, EV3, and EV9, while warning that the software must match the vehicle’s region.
Those notices show that wireless behavior can improve through later software, but they do not prove identical availability in the United States or another market. Always use the regional portal for the vehicle’s actual market.

Quick decision tree
| If your vehicle… | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Has a newer ccNC system and the specifications list wireless projection | Pair the phone through Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; check for an OTA update if reconnection is unreliable. |
| Has Display Audio Gen2V and an official update specifically lists wireless-projection improvements | Install the exact regional update using the official instructions, then pair the phone again. |
| Has a 12.3-inch screen but the portal lists no wireless-projection feature | Assume the system remains wired unless the vehicle documentation says otherwise. |
| Supports wired CarPlay or Android Auto but not native wireless projection | Consider a compatible wireless adapter after checking the USB port, phone, and head-unit requirements. |
| Does not support wired CarPlay or Android Auto | A typical wireless adapter is unlikely to add the missing factory projection capability; investigate vehicle-specific OEM service or a head-unit solution instead. |
Bottom line
Hyundai and Kia are adding wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to more vehicles, and selected Gen2V systems received compatibility improvements. But “12.3-inch screen” is not a feature guarantee. Check the exact model year, market, trim, head-unit generation, and official update listing. Newer ccNC vehicles are the strongest candidates for factory wireless projection; eligible Gen2V systems may gain improved support through software; wired-only systems may need a third-party adapter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Hyundai or Kia with a 12.3-inch screen support wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay?
No. Screen size does not determine wireless Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Hyundai and Kia use different infotainment systems behind similarly sized displays.
Can a software update add wireless CarPlay to an older Hyundai or Kia?
Some eligible Display Audio Gen2V systems received a June 2024 software improvement for broader wireless phone compatibility. The update is not universal, so verify the exact vehicle and head unit through the official regional portal.
Will a wireless CarPlay adapter work in any Hyundai or Kia with a 12.3-inch screen?
Usually, the vehicle must already support wired Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and the adapter must match the phone, USB data port, and infotainment system. It is not an OEM conversion and will not work with every head unit.
How do I check whether my Hyundai or Kia is eligible?
Use the official Hyundai or Kia update portal for the vehicle’s market, search by VIN or vehicle type, and match the model year and infotainment system. Do not install a package from another region.
The Bottom Line
A 12.3-inch Hyundai or Kia display does not automatically mean wireless Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Verify the exact head unit and regional software listing. ccNC systems commonly include factory wireless projection, selected Gen2V systems may improve after an official update, and genuinely wired systems may require a compatible wireless adapter.
