Which Driver-Assistance Settings to Review Before Driving an XPENG in Europe

Before driving an XPENG in Europe, review ACC, lane warnings and steering assistance, active-safety alerts, attention monitoring, parking controls, sensor limits and post-update changes using the manual for your exact model and software.

Before moving, check the driver-assistance functions fitted to your exact XPENG, what alerts they issue, their operating limits, and the precise way to pause, cancel or override them. Use the owner manual for your model, model year, market and software version; do not assume that a G6, G9, P7+, X9 or L03 uses the same menu names or defaults. Assistance can support parts of driving, but you must stay attentive and be ready to steer or brake immediately.

Start with the manual for your exact car

XPENG Germany publishes owner manuals separately by model and year, including the G6, G9, P7+, X9 and L03. That separation matters: equipment, menu labels, activation sequences, warning sounds, operating conditions and factory defaults can differ between models, European markets and software releases.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Find the manual supplied with your vehicle, or the matching model-and-year entry in XPENG Germany’s owner-manual catalogue. Check the vehicle identification, model year and software version shown in the car before using a procedure. If a screen label in your car differs from a description elsewhere, follow the in-car label and the manual for that vehicle rather than trying to map another XPENG’s controls onto it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the current manual accessible in the car or through the vehicle’s approved digital help. A generic video, forum post or an owner’s settings list can be useful for orientation, but it cannot establish the controls, defaults or limits for your particular vehicle. If the manual and an online description disagree, treat the vehicle-specific manual and displayed instruction as controlling and ask XPENG support or a service centre when the discrepancy affects safety.

The pre-drive review: what to check

Use the following as a list of subjects to locate in the manual and vehicle menus. It is not a universal list of settings to switch on or off.

Area Review in the manual or car Confirm before moving
Adaptive cruise control (ACC) How to activate, set speed, change following distance, pause and cancel; the conditions in which it can operate. Which indication shows that cruise assistance is active and what action cancels it immediately.
Lane-departure warning When lane markings are required, the warning type and timing, and any sensitivity or availability controls. What a visual, audible or steering-wheel alert means and how to respond.
Lane-centering or lane-keeping assistance Activation and cancellation, required driver input, road and speed limits, and how it behaves when markings fade. How to take over without fighting the system and how to disengage it deliberately.
Collision warning and emergency braking Which forward or surrounding collision alerts and emergency interventions are fitted, their limitations and the driver’s expected response. That an alert is not proof that every hazard will be detected or avoided.
Lane emergency intervention If fitted, the circumstances in which the car may apply steering or braking to address a lane-edge or adjacent-vehicle risk. What the intervention feels and sounds like and how the driver can override it safely.
Driver-attention monitoring How attention or drowsiness warnings are generated, displayed and silenced or acknowledged. What the warning requires you to do; it does not replace your own observation of the road.
Parking assistance Model-specific automated-parking controls, sensor requirements, speed limits and cancellation method. How to stop the manoeuvre instantly and where you must keep watching for people, objects and traffic.
Sensors and conditions Cautions covering cameras, radar or other sensors, road markings, visibility, weather, dirt, damage and unusual roads. Whether the system is available now and what warning indicates degraded or unavailable assistance.

Compare functions before choosing a setting

Drivers often describe every assistance feature as “autopilot,” but the practical differences matter. Compare each function on five questions: what it controls, how it starts, what it tells you, where it can operate and how you cancel it. A lane-departure warning primarily alerts you to a possible boundary crossing. Lane-centering or lane-keeping assistance may add steering input, so it has a different takeover obligation. ACC manages speed and spacing but does not replace steering supervision. Collision warning may request your intervention, whereas emergency braking may intervene automatically. Parking assistance controls a manoeuvre only within its specified procedure and still requires continuous observation.

Do not infer that enabling one feature enables another, or that an active icon proves every related feature is available. Read the status indicators and the manual’s definitions. If a menu groups several functions together, identify which individual alert or intervention each switch affects before changing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adaptive cruise control: verify the whole control loop

Activation and set speed

Locate the exact ACC activation command and the indication that a speed has been set. Check whether the vehicle requires a minimum speed, a detected lead vehicle, a particular gear or a clear operating state. The manual, not a generic driving video, is the authority for those prerequisites.

Following distance

If your XPENG provides distance levels, identify the control and the meaning of each level. Treat the displayed distance as an assistance setting, not a guarantee that the car will stop within a safe distance in every situation. Understand whether the selected level persists after a restart or must be selected again; the answer is model- and software-specific.

Pause, cancel and takeover

Practice the normal cancellation command while stationary or in a safe, legal situation. Learn the difference between a temporary pause and a full cancellation, and what happens when you press the brake, accelerator or another steering-wheel control. The key pre-drive test is being able to stop assistance without searching through a screen.

Conditions that can defeat cruise assistance

Read the manual’s cautions for stationary objects, cut-ins, bends, steep gradients, poor visibility, roadworks and vehicles that are difficult to classify. If the system reports that it is unavailable, degraded or requesting driver intervention, control speed and spacing yourself rather than attempting to force activation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before entering faster traffic, make sure you can distinguish a set-speed display from a ready or standby display. Confirm how a temporary accelerator input affects the system and when normal spacing control resumes, if the manual describes that behaviour. Never use an unfamiliar control sequence while moving merely to discover what it does.

Lane assistance: separate warning from steering support

Lane-departure warning

A departure warning tells you that the vehicle may be crossing a detected lane boundary; it does not keep the vehicle centred. Find out which road markings the system can recognise, whether a turn signal suppresses a warning, and how the warning is presented. A warning may be absent when markings are missing, obscured or outside the system’s operating conditions.

Lane-centering or lane-keeping assistance

Determine whether your vehicle offers a steering-support function, how it is enabled, and what driver input is required. Read the sections on hands-on monitoring, curves, narrow lanes, merges, construction zones and lane splits. Learn the cancellation sequence and the escalation pattern if the system does not detect sufficient driver engagement.

Taking over smoothly

Keep your normal view of the road and maintain a comfortable grip so you can steer around a hazard. If the car issues a takeover request, respond immediately using the steering, pedals or the cancellation control specified in the manual. Do not wait for a second warning or assume that a lane-centering display means the road ahead is clear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing two lane settings, ask whether one only warns while the other can steer, whether both require visible markings, and whether their alerts have different timing. Select only a mode whose escalation and cancellation behaviour you understand. If the road layout is temporary or ambiguous, manual steering is the safer choice than experimenting with a setting.

Active-safety alerts: know what each intervention means

Collision warnings

Read which collision warnings your model provides and whether they cover forward, rear, side or cross-traffic situations. Identify the visual, audible and tactile signals. A warning calls for your driving response; it is not a promise that automatic braking will follow.

Emergency braking

Find the manual’s description of automatic emergency braking, including its detection limits, possible false activations and situations in which it may not operate. Know whether the system can be overridden by the accelerator, steering or a dedicated control, and what the manual says to do if an intervention occurs unexpectedly.

Lane emergency intervention

If fitted, this function may provide steering or braking in a high-risk lane-edge or adjacent-vehicle situation. Check the exact trigger conditions and the override method. Leave enough space and remain prepared for the vehicle to intervene when your intended path differs from the system’s interpretation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After any unexpected warning or intervention, continue manually and record the displayed message. A persistent or unexplained warning warrants consultation with XPENG support or a service centre rather than repeatedly switching the feature off and on without understanding the cause.

Driver-attention and monitoring alerts

Locate the attention-monitoring section and identify how the car communicates a prompt to look at the road, take a break or re-engage with driving. Understand how to acknowledge the prompt and what happens if it repeats. These alerts are an additional signal; they cannot observe every distraction, fatigue state or medical emergency. Plan breaks and keep monitoring traffic yourself.

A driver-monitoring prompt is not permission to divert your eyes to a phone or entertainment screen. If you cannot maintain continuous observation, disengage assistance and stop safely for a break. Do not attempt to defeat, cover or obstruct a monitoring camera; follow the manual’s instructions if a camera or attention system reports a fault.

Parking assistance requires the same supervision

If your XPENG has automated parking support, read the complete model-specific procedure before trying it in a public space. Check the required selection of a parking space, the maximum manoeuvring speed, sensor-clearance requirements, gear or pedal instructions and the cancellation command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During a manoeuvre, watch the space, kerbs, cyclists, pedestrians, doors and adjacent vehicles continuously. Be ready to stop the car using the method specified in the manual. If the view is blocked, a sensor is dirty or the space changes, cancel and complete the manoeuvre manually.

Do not treat a successful previous parking manoeuvre as proof that the same space is suitable today. People, bicycles, delivery vehicles and open doors can appear after the system has assessed the space. Keep your foot and attention positioned as the manual requires so that stopping is immediate and deliberate.

Sensors, road markings and weather can change availability

Assistance depends on what the car can detect. Review the manual’s cautions for faded or covered lane markings, glare, darkness, heavy rain, fog, snow, spray, sharp bends, roadworks, unusual lane layouts and obstructions near cameras or other sensors. A clean-looking windscreen does not prove that every sensor has an unobstructed view.

An XPENG-branded online guide also advises keeping cameras and sensors clean. Because the publication status of that guide was not independently verified, treat the manual supplied for your vehicle as the controlling source. If the car displays a blocked-sensor or limited-function warning, clean or inspect only as the manual permits and do not rely on the affected assistance until the warning clears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect for damage after a minor impact, windscreen replacement or body repair, and follow the manual’s instructions about calibration or service. Do not place stickers, mounts or other objects where they could obstruct a camera or sensor. If assistance remains unavailable after the permitted checks, drive without it and arrange professional help.

Recheck settings after software updates

Software can change the timing or behaviour you have learned. XPENG’s March 20, 2026 OTA 5.8.7 release note describes changes involving adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assistance and lane-departure-warning timing. The surfaced release note is in Dutch, so use the update information displayed in your vehicle and the documentation for your market to determine whether your car received the same change.

  1. Read the update summary shown on the vehicle screen before accepting or after completing the installation.
  2. Open the relevant ACC, lane-assistance and warning sections in the current manual or digital help.
  3. Check whether activation buttons, alert timing, availability messages or cancellation behaviour changed.
  4. In a safe location, confirm that you can recognise the active-state indicator and cancel each function.
  5. Do not rely on a remembered setting from the previous software version until you have verified the current behaviour.

An update may also restore, alter or rename a preference, so check the actual state shown after installation instead of assuming that your previous choice remains. If the vehicle presents a new warning or unfamiliar intervention, reduce reliance on assistance until you understand it.

A five-minute review before a journey

  1. Identify the car. Confirm model, model year, market and installed software version.
  2. Check the current state. Look for active-assistance icons, warning messages and any indication that a sensor or feature is unavailable.
  3. Review cruise controls. Confirm the set-speed, following-distance, pause and cancel commands for your vehicle.
  4. Review lane controls. Distinguish departure warning from steering assistance and identify the takeover request.
  5. Scan the active-safety alerts. Know which warnings and interventions are fitted and what response each requires.
  6. Check attention and parking features. If either is enabled or likely to be used, review its alert or stop command.
  7. Assess conditions. Look at markings, visibility, weather, roadworks and sensor cleanliness before relying on assistance.
  8. Set only what you understand. If you cannot explain an option’s alert, limit or cancellation method, leave it unused until you have read the manual.

Repeat the review after a software update, a service visit, a windscreen or body repair, or whenever another driver has changed the vehicle’s settings. The objective is not to maximise the number of active features; it is to know exactly what the car may do and how you will take control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

European rules explain the framework, not a permission to stop supervising

The European Commission’s vehicle-safety overview describes mandatory driver-assistance requirements under the General Safety Regulation, including lane-keeping systems and automated braking for cars and vans. It also says the European assisted-driving framework aligns with UN Regulation No. 171.

That framework governs approved assistance functions; it does not turn an XPENG into a driverless vehicle. UN Regulation No. 171, Introduction, states: “ADAS are aimed to assist the drivers, who always remain responsible for vehicle control and shall permanently monitor the environment and vehicle/system performance.” The quotation appears in the EU Official Journal record 2024/2689, published November 4, 2024, with entry into force on September 22, 2024.

Consequently, European approval or mandatory equipment is not evidence that a particular feature works on every road, in every weather condition or without continuous supervision. Legal availability, equipment fitted to your car and actual operation in current conditions are separate questions.

Common mistakes and the safer alternative

Mistake Why it fails Better practice
Copying another XPENG owner’s menu settings Model, year, market and software can change labels, defaults and availability. Use the manual and menus for your exact vehicle.
Treating lane-centering as lane-departure warning One warns; the other may add steering support, with different limits and takeover behaviour. Learn each function separately.
Assuming an active icon means the system is monitoring everything Detection can be limited by markings, weather, visibility, road layout or sensor obstruction. Read availability warnings and continue your own observation.
Waiting for a second takeover alert Conditions can worsen before another prompt appears. Take control at the first request or whenever the situation demands it.
Skipping the update notes Software releases can alter assistance timing and behaviour. Review notes and recheck controls after every relevant update.
Using automated parking while looking away People, objects and traffic can enter the manoeuvring path. Monitor continuously and cancel immediately when needed.
Cleaning or repairing sensors without checking instructions Incorrect handling can leave a sensor obstructed, damaged or incorrectly calibrated. Use only the inspection and service steps permitted in the manual.
Assuming a warning is a fault-free safety net Warnings and interventions have defined detection limits and may be unavailable. Drive manually whenever the system is limited or uncertain.

When to stop relying on assistance

  • The car reports a sensor obstruction, degraded operation or feature unavailability.
  • Lane markings are absent, contradictory or obscured by construction, snow, water or glare.
  • Weather or visibility prevents you from judging the road independently.
  • The system requests a takeover and you cannot respond comfortably or immediately.
  • You are unsure which function is active or how to cancel it.
  • The vehicle’s behaviour does not match the current manual or the displayed instructions.

In any of these cases, reduce reliance on assistance and drive manually when it is safe and lawful to do so. Arrange service or consult XPENG support if a warning persists, a sensor appears damaged or the controls do not behave as documented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Does European approval make an XPENG autonomous?

No. European rules establish requirements for approved assistance systems. UN Regulation No. 171 still places responsibility for vehicle control and continuous monitoring on the driver.

Is lane-centering the same as lane-departure warning?

No. A warning alerts you to a possible lane crossing. Lane-centering or lane-keeping may provide steering support and has separate activation, engagement and takeover requirements.

What should I do after an OTA update?

Read the displayed notes, check the current manual or digital help, and verify the active indicator and cancellation method in a safe place. XPENG’s March 20, 2026 OTA 5.8.7 note describes changes to ACC, lane-centering and lane-warning timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to buy an accessory to make these checks?

No accessory is established as necessary by the available product information. The essential reference is the owner manual for the exact XPENG, listed by model and year on XPENG Germany’s official catalogue. Do not substitute an unverified product for the vehicle instructions.

Can I rely on a camera or sensor warning to tell me when attention is needed?

No. Attention alerts and sensor-status messages are additional information, not replacements for your own observation. Keep watching traffic and respond immediately to any takeover request or changing hazard.

What if the controls differ from the manual I found online?

Stop experimenting while moving. Confirm the model, year, market and software version, then use the supplied manual, in-car help or XPENG support. Do not assume another owner’s procedure applies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which XPENG driver-assistance settings should I check first?

Start with ACC, lane-departure warning, lane-centering or lane-keeping assistance, collision warnings, emergency braking, attention monitoring, parking assistance and sensor-status messages. For each, learn its active indicator, limits, alerts and cancellation method in the manual for your exact car.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I turn all assistance features off before driving?

Do not apply a universal on/off rule. Feature availability and controls differ, and some equipment may be required by the vehicle specification or local framework. Choose only settings you understand and follow the exact manual.

What does a takeover request mean?

It means you must resume full control immediately using the steering, pedals or cancellation command specified for your vehicle. Do not wait for another warning.

Are there measured XPENG safety statistics supporting one setting?

No measured XPENG safety outcome is established here, so no universal setting can be declared safest. Compare functions by their controls, alerts, limits and supervision requirements.

The Bottom Line

Before every journey, identify your XPENG’s exact model, year, market and software, then verify ACC, lane assistance, active-safety alerts, attention monitoring, parking controls and sensor status. Read update notes, learn how to cancel each function and remain continuously responsible for steering, braking and monitoring the road.
