Which Diesel Cars Actually Fit a ₹10 Lakh Budget in India? Five Entry-Price Picks Compared

Five new diesel models were reported below ₹10 lakh entry ex-showroom in July 2026. Compare their prices, outputs, transmissions and the checks needed to confirm a qualifying trim in your city.

If your ceiling is ₹10 lakh, the clearest current shortlist is five new diesel cars whose entry ex-showroom price was reported below that mark on July 17, 2026: Tata Altroz, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV 3XO and Hyundai Venue. The prices are not on-road totals, and only the starting diesel trim qualifies; better-equipped versions can cross ₹10 lakh.

The Tata Altroz is the only hatchback and has the lowest reported entry price. The other four are compact SUVs. The Mahindra XUV 3XO has the highest stated torque, while the Altroz is the only model in this comparison reported with a manual gearbox alone. Confirm the exact diesel variant, city price, registration costs and dealer quote before paying a booking amount.

What “under ₹10 lakh” means in this comparison

Every figure below is an entry ex-showroom price reported by Moneycontrol on July 17, 2026. Ex-showroom pricing generally covers the vehicle at the showroom before your state’s registration, road tax, insurance, handling charges and other on-road items. The July comparison does not establish an on-road price for any particular city, so none of these cars can be described as costing less than ₹10 lakh on the road.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A qualifying starting price also does not put every version of a nameplate below the cap. For example, Autocar’s April 20, 2026 listing placed the Altroz diesel range at ₹8.15 lakh to ₹10.27 lakh. The base diesel can therefore fit while higher trims do not. Prices, trim availability and taxes can change, so treat the table as a dated shortlist rather than a permanent price promise.

Five diesel cars with reported entry prices below ₹10 lakh

Model Entry ex-showroom price reported Diesel engine and output reported Transmission reported What sets it apart
Tata Altroz ₹8,14,990 1.5-litre; 90 PS; 200 Nm 5-speed manual Only hatchback in the list and the lowest reported starting price
Tata Nexon ₹9,14,990 1.5-litre; 115 PS; 260 Nm 6-speed manual or 6-speed AMT Compact SUV with a manual and automated-manual option
Kia Sonet ₹9,19,900 1.5-litre CRDi VGT; 116 PS; 250 Nm 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic Compact SUV with both manual and conventional automatic choices
Mahindra XUV 3XO ₹9,36,000 1.5-litre CRDe; 117 PS; 300 Nm 6-speed manual or 6-speed AMT Highest stated torque among these five cars
Hyundai Venue ₹9,94,600 1.5-litre U2; 116 PS; 250 Nm 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic Reported starting price is closest to the ₹10-lakh ceiling

These are reported specifications, not independent tests or manufacturer quotations. Output figures use the units given in the July comparison: PS for power and Nm for torque.

Tata Altroz: the lowest-entry hatchback option

The Altroz is the price-led choice. Its reported ₹8,14,990 entry ex-showroom price is the lowest of the five, leaving the largest nominal gap to the ₹10-lakh threshold before registration and insurance are added. It is also the only hatchback in this group; buyers who do not want an SUV body style have a clear alternative.

Its 1.5-litre diesel was reported at 90 PS and 200 Nm, the lowest power and torque figures in this table. The gearbox listed is a five-speed manual only. That makes the Altroz relevant if you are comfortable changing gears yourself, but it does not provide the automatic or AMT choice available with the four SUVs in the cited comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should consider it

  • Drivers specifically seeking a hatchback rather than a compact SUV.
  • Buyers prioritising the lowest reported starting price.
  • Manual-transmission users who do not need an automatic option.

What to verify

Check whether the ₹8,14,990 figure still applies to a diesel trim sold in your city and whether the equipment you need is included in that exact version. The reported Altroz diesel range extends to ₹10.27 lakh in Autocar’s April 2026 listing, so do not assume every Altroz diesel variant remains under the cap.

Tata Nexon: an SUV with manual or AMT choice

The Nexon’s reported entry ex-showroom price is ₹9,14,990. Its 1.5-litre diesel is listed at 115 PS and 260 Nm, placing it above the Altroz on both stated power and torque. The transmission choices are a six-speed manual and a six-speed AMT.

An AMT can be selected when two-pedal driving matters but a conventional automatic is not essential. It is technically different from the six-speed automatic listed for the Sonet and Venue, so test-drive the exact gearbox rather than treating every automatic-labelled option as identical.

Why it makes the shortlist

  • It remains below ₹10 lakh at the reported entry ex-showroom price.
  • It offers more stated torque than the Altroz.
  • It gives buyers a choice between a manual and six-speed AMT.

The price is for the starting diesel trim. Confirm which trim carries the diesel engine, whether the AMT is offered at the price shown, and how far the selected version moves above the cap once registration and insurance are added.

Kia Sonet: a compact SUV with a six-speed automatic

The Sonet was listed at a reported ₹9,19,900 entry ex-showroom price, only ₹4,910 above the Nexon’s stated starting figure in this comparison. Its 1.5-litre CRDi VGT diesel output was reported as 116 PS and 250 Nm.

Gearbox availability is a key distinction: the cited comparison lists both a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic. If you want a conventional automatic rather than an AMT, the Sonet belongs on the shortlist alongside the Venue.

Questions to ask the dealer

  • Which exact diesel trim is currently available with the six-speed automatic?
  • Is the quoted ₹9,19,900 price tied to a manual-only entry trim?
  • What is the itemised on-road total at your registration address?

Those questions matter because a model can have a qualifying base price while the automatic or better-equipped diesel versions cost more than the headline figure.

Mahindra XUV 3XO: the torque leader in this group

The XUV 3XO’s reported entry ex-showroom price is ₹9,36,000. Its 1.5-litre CRDe diesel was listed at 117 PS and 300 Nm, the highest torque figure among the five models in the July comparison. It is also reported with both a six-speed manual and a six-speed AMT.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Torque is a specification, not a guarantee of acceleration, fuel economy or towing performance. It does, however, explain why this model may appeal to a buyer who places more weight on the published torque number than on the lowest possible entry price.

Best fit

  • Drivers who want the highest stated torque in this shortlist.
  • Buyers choosing between a manual and AMT SUV.
  • People whose priorities put compact-SUV packaging ahead of the Altroz’s lower starting price.

Ask for a written quote for the exact diesel manual or AMT trim. The ₹9,36,000 amount is the reported starting price, not evidence that every XUV 3XO diesel version is under ₹10 lakh.

Hyundai Venue: closest to the price ceiling

The Venue has the highest reported entry price of the five at ₹9,94,600, leaving only ₹5,400 before the ₹10-lakh ex-showroom boundary. Its 1.5-litre U2 diesel was reported at 116 PS and 250 Nm, with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic.

The Venue is therefore a candidate for buyers who specifically want its compact-SUV package and automatic availability, not for someone seeking the greatest price buffer.

Budget check

Get the dealer to identify the exact trim code, effective date of the price and every mandatory charge. A ₹9,94,600 entry ex-showroom price does not mean the final invoice or on-road amount will remain below ₹10 lakh.

How much price headroom does each entry version have?

Subtracting each reported entry price from ₹10 lakh shows how little room some buyers have even before on-road charges. This is a mathematical comparison of the published starting prices, not a promise that the amount can be used toward registration or insurance.

Model Reported entry price Nominal gap to ₹10 lakh
Tata Altroz ₹8,14,990 ₹1,85,010
Tata Nexon ₹9,14,990 ₹85,010
Kia Sonet ₹9,19,900 ₹80,100
Mahindra XUV 3XO ₹9,36,000 ₹64,000
Hyundai Venue ₹9,94,600 ₹5,400

The Altroz has a substantially larger nominal buffer than the SUVs. The Nexon, Sonet and XUV 3XO leave progressively less room, while the Venue effectively has no practical margin once mandatory on-road costs are considered. A buyer with a strict ₹10-lakh total budget should ask for the complete on-road quote rather than use this gap as spending allowance.

Which one should you choose?

Choose by body style

Select the Altroz if a hatchback is the requirement. The Nexon, Sonet, XUV 3XO and Venue are the compact-SUV alternatives in the cited five-model comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose by gearbox

For a manual, all five have a reported manual option, although the Altroz is listed only with a five-speed manual. For an AMT, compare the Nexon and XUV 3XO. For a six-speed automatic, compare the Sonet and Venue. Confirm that the desired gearbox is paired with the diesel engine in the trim sold locally.

Choose by published output

The XUV 3XO has the highest stated power and torque at 117 PS and 300 Nm. The Nexon follows at 115 PS and 260 Nm. Sonet and Venue are listed at 116 PS and 250 Nm, while the Altroz is listed at 90 PS and 200 Nm. These are catalogue figures and should not be treated as a complete driving comparison.

Choose by price headroom

The Altroz gives the widest gap between the reported entry price and ₹10 lakh. The Nexon, Sonet and XUV 3XO sit progressively closer to the limit, and the Venue starts just below it. A wider gap can be useful once registration, insurance and accessories are added, but it still does not establish an on-road total.

How to verify the price before booking

  1. Identify the exact variant. Ask for the full diesel trim name, gearbox and model year shown on the quotation. “Base model” is not enough if several diesel trims exist.
  2. Check the effective date. Request the current ex-showroom price in writing and compare it with the date on the dealer quotation.
  3. Confirm city and registration location. State registration taxes and fees vary by location; the quoted national starting price cannot replace a city-specific calculation.
  4. Request an itemised on-road quote. Separate vehicle price, registration, insurance, taxes, handling or logistics charges, accessories and any optional package.
  5. Check availability. Ask whether the quoted diesel trim is physically orderable and what waiting period or allocation conditions apply.
  6. Test-drive the chosen gearbox. An AMT and a conventional automatic are different transmissions. Drive the exact diesel variant you intend to buy.
  7. Recheck on purchase day. Prices and availability are volatile. A quote valid today may not be valid at invoicing.

Why diesel still appears in the under-₹10-lakh conversation

Diesel is no longer the majority fuel choice in India’s passenger-vehicle market, but it remains a material part of sales. Moneycontrol, attributing data to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), reported that diesel models represented 16.02% of 410,853 passenger vehicles retailed in India in June 2026. That is a monthly retail share, not the proportion of all cars currently on Indian roads.

Autocar reported a different measure for FY2026: diesel accounted for 18.08% of passenger-vehicle sales, compared with 21.98% for CNG and 47.48% for petrol. The June 2026 retail figure and FY2026 sales figure cover different periods and measures, so they should not be combined into one market-share number.

Limits of this shortlist

  • The five prices and specifications come from a July 17, 2026 comparison and were not independently confirmed as current manufacturer quotations.
  • October market listings from Autocar and Smartprix include larger or different groups of diesel models and can show ranges that cross ₹10 lakh. Differences reflect trim selection, listing methodology and date.
  • No city-specific on-road total is established here.
  • Fuel economy, maintenance cost, crash-test performance, waiting periods, discounts and resale values are not provided in the cited comparison, so they should not be inferred from the table.
  • A model qualifies through its reported entry price; higher trims, automatic versions or optional equipment may exceed the budget.

Bottom line for a ₹10-lakh diesel budget

Start with the Tata Altroz if you want the lowest reported entry ex-showroom price and a hatchback. Compare the Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV 3XO if an AMT is important, and the Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue if you want the reported six-speed automatic choices. Consider the XUV 3XO for the highest published torque, but do not call any model the universal winner without specifying your body-style, gearbox and local-price priorities. Before signing, obtain a dated, itemised quote for the exact diesel trim in your city.

Which shortlisted diesel car has the most torque?

The Mahindra XUV 3XO is listed at 300 Nm, the highest stated torque among the five. Its reported diesel output is 117 PS and it is available with a six-speed manual or six-speed AMT.

Which options offer an automatic diesel gearbox?

The Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV 3XO are listed with six-speed AMTs. The Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue are listed with six-speed automatics. Confirm the exact diesel trim and local availability because the entry price may apply to a manual-only version.

Can a higher Altroz diesel trim still be under ₹10 lakh?

Not necessarily. Autocar’s April 20, 2026 listing put the Altroz diesel range at ₹8.15 lakh to ₹10.27 lakh, so some higher versions cross the threshold even though the entry version qualifies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I ask a dealer before booking?

Request the exact diesel trim and gearbox, the price effective date, a city-specific itemised on-road quote, current stock or waiting period, and confirmation that the quoted version is orderable. Test-drive the same gearbox you plan to buy.

Why do different websites show different diesel-car lists or prices?

Listings can use different dates, trims and inclusion rules. October pages from Autocar and Smartprix show broader or different groups and ranges that may cross ₹10 lakh. Recheck the manufacturer or dealer quote on the day you buy.

The Bottom Line

For the largest price buffer and a hatchback, begin with the Tata Altroz. For an AMT SUV, compare the Nexon and XUV 3XO; for a six-speed automatic, compare the Sonet and Venue. Treat every figure as an entry ex-showroom price and verify the exact city-specific on-road quote before booking.
