Google built-in is currently offered by vehicles from Ford, General Motors, Honda, Lincoln, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan, Polestar, Renault and Volvo. That is a manufacturer list, not a guarantee that every model, year or trim includes the system. Before you buy, verify the exact vehicle in your country, then test its native Maps, Play, assistant, connectivity plan and offline behavior.
What “Google built-in” means in a car
Google built-in refers to Google apps and services integrated into the vehicle’s own infotainment system. In a compatible car, Google Maps and Google Play run on the native screen, and a voice assistant—currently Google Assistant in many vehicles, with Gemini rolling out—can be used without projecting a phone screen.

This differs from using Android Auto. Android Auto projects supported phone apps to the car display and depends on a compatible phone. Google built-in is part of the vehicle’s infotainment hardware and software. A car can support Android Auto without having Google Maps and Google Play installed natively, so ask which arrangement you are being shown.
Google says compatibility and availability may vary by car manufacturer, language, region and data plan. The same badge or model name can therefore cover vehicles with different software, equipment and connected-services terms.

Which automakers currently offer Google built-in?
Google’s Help Center manufacturer list, checked in October 2026, names nine automakers:

Google links to each manufacturer because the list is not a complete global model-and-trim catalogue. Vehicles may not be sold in every region, and automakers can change equipment between model years or production runs.
Honda’s published U.S. examples show why trim matters
Honda’s U.S. compatibility page, accessed October 13, 2026, lists eight specific configurations. They are useful examples of the level of detail to look for, but they are not a promise of availability in another country or at a particular dealer.

Notice that some entries are a whole model line while others identify a particular trim, such as Sport Touring or Touring Hybrid. A salesperson saying “the CR-V has Google built-in” is not enough; have the trim and model year written on the buyer’s order or equipment sheet.
How to verify a specific car before you buy
- Start with the local automaker page. Select your country, model year and model, then open the trim-level equipment or infotainment section. Google’s manufacturer list is a starting point, not the final specification.
- Match the vehicle identification details. Confirm the model year, trim name, body style and powertrain. A used vehicle may have a different system from a newer vehicle carrying the same model name.
- Ask the dealer to identify the native system. Request the exact infotainment name and ask whether Google Maps and Google Play are installed on the vehicle itself or are being shown through Android Auto.
- Turn the system on during a test drive. Look for Google Maps and Google Play in the native launcher. Do not rely on a sales video, a phone screen or a generic brochure image.
- Check language and country support. Set the system to the language you will use and confirm that voice commands, navigation data and app downloads work in your market.
- Get connectivity terms in writing. Ask about any included trial, the recurring price after the trial, renewal rules, the data allowance and what happens when service ends.
- Read the owner’s manual or digital help pages. Look for sections covering offline maps, hotspot connections, account removal, privacy settings, software updates and factory resets.
- Inspect the delivered vehicle. Equipment can change between an advertised specification and the car that arrives. Compare the vehicle identification number and window sticker with the configuration you tested.
Build a side-by-side comparison sheet
When two cars both advertise Google built-in, record the answers for each vehicle rather than relying on a general brand reputation. A simple table prevents a high trim from being compared with a base trim by accident.

Ask for the answers by email or on the vehicle’s equipment sheet. If the dealer cannot identify the system or subscription, contact the automaker with the vehicle identification number before paying a deposit.
What to test on the road
Native Maps and search
Open Google Maps from the car’s own interface, search for an address and start a route. Check whether the map loads without your phone connected, whether traffic information appears and whether the route can be recalculated after a turn. If you are buying an electric vehicle, enter a long trip and ask how the system identifies charging stops and handles a low battery. Google describes these capabilities for compatible services, but the exact EV-routing behavior is manufacturer- and model-dependent.
Voice commands and vehicle controls
Try the assistant in the language you will use. Test ordinary navigation requests and, where supported, commands for vehicle functions such as climate or media. Ask the salesperson which commands are implemented by the car rather than by a phone. A voice assistant can answer questions while still lacking control over a particular vehicle function.

Google Play and app availability
Open Google Play on the native display and inspect the catalogue. Apps can vary by country, vehicle and software version. Confirm that the apps you actually need can be installed and that their controls are usable without unsafe typing while driving. The presence of Google Play does not mean every Android phone app is available or approved for the car.
Phone integration
Pair your phone, then test calls, messages and media. If Apple CarPlay or Android Auto matters to you, verify that it is supported on this exact trim and whether it is wired, wireless or both. Native Google services and phone projection are separate features; one does not establish the other.
Account and privacy controls
Find the screen for Google account sign-in, guest mode, location history, voice recordings and data sharing. Confirm how to remove your account before selling or returning the vehicle. If the car is used, ensure the previous owner’s account is removed and the system has been reset.

Connectivity, subscriptions and offline behavior
Many in-car calls, messages, streaming functions and navigation features need internet access to work fully. Depending on the vehicle, that connection may come from an included cellular data plan, a paid renewal, Wi-Fi or your phone’s hotspot. Ask four separate questions rather than accepting “free internet” as an answer:
- How long does the included trial last?
- What is the recurring price, and does it renew automatically?
- Which functions stop, lose live data or become limited when the plan expires?
- Can the car connect to a phone hotspot or home Wi-Fi, and can your carrier charge for that use?
Google says Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot may support many functions when a car has no data plan, but support varies by model and a carrier may charge for hotspot use. Ask whether a hotspot can be used while driving, whether several occupants can connect, and whether the car reconnects automatically; those are vehicle-specific details to confirm in the manual.
Ford Digital Experience example
Ford’s published information for Digital Experience gives a concrete example of why you need model-specific answers. When connectivity ends, Google Maps loses real-time traffic and the ability to download new offline maps, while Google Play becomes unavailable. A hotspot or Wi-Fi connection can restore connectivity. These are Ford Digital Experience terms; do not assume another automaker has the same limits.
Also check the system name. Ford treats Digital Experience and SYNC as distinct systems. A Ford advertised as having SYNC does not automatically have the native Google apps associated with Digital Experience.

Google is upgrading the in-car assistant from Google Assistant to Gemini. In an April 30, 2026 announcement, Google said Gemini would come not only to new cars but also to existing ones through a software update. That statement describes a rollout, not a guarantee that every compatible car has received the upgrade.

The initial rollout starts in English in the United States. Google says availability, supported languages and vehicle-manual insights vary by country, automaker and model. On a test drive, check which assistant is actually running today, the language setting, the software version and whether the dealer can explain the update path.
Ask whether updates arrive over the air, through a dealer or through another process; whether the car needs an active data plan; and whether an update can change app availability or controls. Do not buy on the assumption that a promised future assistant is already enabled.
Regional, language and ownership checks
A vehicle imported from another country can have different maps, app catalogues, cellular support and assistant languages even when its hardware looks identical. Confirm that the local dealer will activate connected services for the vehicle identification number and that the data plan is sold in your market. Google’s compatibility statement covers manufacturer, language, region and data-plan variation, so a listing from another country is not proof of local support.
For a used car, ask for the original market, delivery date and software history. Check for outstanding updates, expired trials and any account still signed in. After a factory reset, sign in with your own account and verify that Maps, Play and voice functions activate. Keep the reset procedure and subscription cancellation instructions for the next owner when you eventually sell the car.
Questions to ask about navigation, EVs and daily use
- Navigation: Does live traffic require a subscription? Can maps be saved for offline use? How are map updates delivered?
- Electric vehicles: Does routing include charging stops, charger availability or battery predictions? Which functions continue without data?
- Voice: Which climate, window, seat or media commands are supported? Are there restrictions while driving?
- Apps: Which Google Play apps are approved for this vehicle and market? Can the owner add or remove them?
- Connectivity: What is the trial period, renewal price and cancellation method? Is hotspot use allowed?
- Privacy: Where are account, location, microphone and personalization controls? How is a previous owner’s data erased?
- Compatibility: Are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available on this trim, and do they work wirelessly?
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every trim has the same infotainment
Automakers often reserve newer systems for selected trims or model years. Compare the equipment list for the exact stock number, not a base-model brochure or a review of a different year.
Confusing projection with built-in services
A phone connected by cable can make a vehicle appear to have Google Maps. Disconnect the phone and open the car’s native launcher. If Maps and Play disappear, you were using projection rather than Google built-in.
Ignoring the data plan after the trial
A low purchase price can become a recurring connectivity cost. Record the renewal date and price, then test what remains usable with cellular data disabled.

Forgetting the used-car reset
Before accepting a used vehicle, sign out the previous owner, remove paired phones, reset personal data and confirm that navigation and app services can be activated under your account.

Use the following order when comparing two cars:
- Eligibility: Is the exact model year and trim listed by the automaker for your country?
- Native hardware: Does the car show Google Maps and Google Play without a phone?
- Current software: Which assistant and version are installed now, and what update method is documented?
- Connectivity cost: What is included, what renews and what degrades offline?
- Daily fit: Are the navigation, EV-routing, voice, app and phone-projection features useful to you?
- Ownership exit: Can you remove accounts and personal data easily when the car is sold?
If a salesperson cannot answer these questions, pause the purchase and request the written specification or owner’s manual. Google’s manufacturer list establishes compatibility at a high level; the vehicle’s exact year, trim, market and data plan determine what you will actually receive.

What happens when the connected-service trial ends?
It depends on the automaker. Some live traffic, downloads, apps or messaging functions may stop or lose live data. Ford Digital Experience, for example, loses real-time traffic and new offline-map downloads in Maps and makes Play unavailable when connectivity ends.
Are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto guaranteed with Google built-in?
No. Native Google services and phone projection are separate features. Verify both on the exact trim if they matter to you.
Can I change the assistant language?
Only within the languages supported for that vehicle and market. Google says language and rollout availability vary, so test your preferred language before buying.
