At night, select your vehicle’s Night or automatic day/night display mode, then lower the separate nighttime brightness until the screen is readable but no longer the brightest object in the cabin. If that still draws your eyes, use a built-in screen-off command when your car offers one. Make every adjustment while parked and verify the exact controls in the owner’s manual, because menu names and behavior differ by model, year, region and infotainment software.
Why the same setting does not work in every car
Infotainment systems use different triggers and controls for nighttime dimming. Some follow ambient-light sensors, some switch when the headlamps turn on, and others let you choose Day, Night or Automatic manually. A screen can also be tied to the instrument-cluster illumination, or it can have independent day and night levels. Consequently, a control that solves a bright-screen complaint in one vehicle may do nothing in another.

Manufacturer manuals describe available functions, not measured reductions in crashes, distraction or eye strain. The sources for this guide do not provide a percentage improvement or a laboratory glare threshold. Treat the settings as ways to reduce a potential visual distraction, then keep your attention on the road and use the owner’s manual for your specific vehicle.
The settings to try, in the order that usually makes sense
1. Enable Night or automatic day/night mode
Start with the display mode rather than immediately dragging a brightness slider. In Hyundai’s US infotainment documentation, the display can offer Automatic, Daylight and Night modes. Automatic adjustment can use ambient lighting conditions or headlamp status, depending on the vehicle. Hyundai describes the Night setting this way: “The Night: The brightness is adjusted to prevent glare when the surrounding area is dark.” That is a description of the intended function, not a measured safety result.

Toyota’s 2024 Corolla manual similarly documents automatic switching based on whether the headlights are on or off, as well as manual Daytime and Nighttime modes. If your screen remains in a daytime appearance after dark, check whether the headlamps are actually on, whether the system is set to Automatic, and whether a separate illumination setting is overriding the display.
2. Set a comfortable nighttime brightness
Once Night mode is active, reduce the night-level brightness in small steps. Stop when text and the map remain legible without the screen dominating your view of the cabin. There is no universal numerical level: cabin lighting, windshield reflections, tint, the screen’s technology and your eyesight all change the useful setting. If your car stores separate Day and Night values, change the nighttime value rather than making the daytime screen unnecessarily dim.

Some systems provide contrast as well as brightness. Toyota’s 2024 Corolla instructions list brightness and contrast controls. Lowering brightness is normally the first move; alter contrast only if labels become hard to distinguish after dimming.

A vehicle may link the center display to the instrument-cluster dimmer. Hyundai’s manual notes that a cluster-illumination link may be available, while also allowing separate day and night brightness adjustments on equipped systems. If the center screen changes when you turn the cluster dimmer, decide whether that linked behavior is helping. If it makes one display comfortable but leaves the other too bright or too dark, look for an independent screen setting in the Display menu.

4. Use screen-off mode when dimming is not enough
Some vehicles can turn the display off while leaving audio running. Toyota’s 2024 Corolla instructions describe this option; touching the screen restores the display. It is a model-specific feature, not a guarantee that navigation prompts, backup-camera images or other safety-related views will remain available in every car. Confirm what your vehicle does before relying on it, especially when you need a camera view or route instruction.
How to change the settings safely
- Park completely. Do not experiment with display menus in moving traffic. Mazda warns that adjusting an active driving display while driving can distract you, and Renault’s OPENR documentation also instructs users to perform settings operations while stationary.
- Open the display controls. Look for a Settings, Vehicle Settings or Display entry on the home screen. The wording and menu depth vary by infotainment version.
- Select the mode. Choose Night, or choose Automatic if you want the system to react to ambient light or headlamp status. If Automatic is already selected, test it after the headlamps switch on.
- Adjust the night value. Move the nighttime brightness control down gradually. If the car exposes separate Daytime and Nighttime controls, change Nighttime only.
- Review linked illumination. Operate the cluster dimmer while parked and observe whether the center screen follows it. Disable or leave the link enabled according to which arrangement gives you a readable, unobtrusive display.
- Look for Display off. If the screen remains distracting, check the same menu or a physical display button for a screen-off command. Verify whether audio, navigation guidance and camera views behave as you expect.
- Save and test later. After leaving the menu, drive only when the display is set. At the next dusk or night drive, check whether the automatic trigger and brightness suit the darker cabin. Revisit the manual if the behavior changes with headlights, tunnel lighting or a software update.
Automatic versus manual control
| Approach | How it changes the screen | Advantages | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic day/night | Uses ambient light, headlamp status, or both, depending on the vehicle. | Reduces the need to change settings each evening. | Confirm which trigger your car uses and whether it switches at the time you expect. |
| Manual Night mode | Keeps the display at the user-selected nighttime appearance. | Useful when automatic switching is late, early or inconsistent with your cabin lighting. | Remember that a manual mode may stay active until you change it back. |
| Manual Day mode | Maintains a daytime appearance and brightness. | Can improve readability in strong daylight. | Leaving it active after dark can make the screen conspicuously bright. |
Automatic is not inherently better. It is preferable when its trigger matches your driving conditions; manual Night mode is more predictable when the system responds poorly to garage lighting, tunnels or daytime running-light behavior.

Separate brightness, linked brightness and screen-off: choosing between them
| Control arrangement | Best use | Potential drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Independent night brightness | Fine-tune the center display without changing gauge visibility. | Requires finding and adjusting a second value if the menu hides it. |
| Center display linked to cluster illumination | Keep the driver’s displays at a coordinated level with one dimmer. | A single control may leave one display less comfortable than the other. |
| Display off with audio retained | Remove a persistent visual attractor when you do not need the screen. | Availability and behavior are vehicle-specific; touching the screen may wake it. |
Use the least aggressive option that solves the problem. A readable, low-brightness Night setting preserves access to information; screen-off is an alternative only when the vehicle supports it and you understand what disappears.

Toyota 2024 Corolla
The 2024 Corolla manual documents automatic day/night switching according to headlight status, manual Daytime and Nighttime modes, brightness and contrast adjustments, and a command to turn the screen off while audio continues. Touching the screen can restore the display. Those instructions apply to the specified Corolla system and should not be treated as a universal Toyota or industry menu path. The details are in Toyota’s 2024 Corolla screen-display instructions.
Renault OPENR panorama screen
Renault’s OPENR manual includes central-screen brightness and day/night mode controls and states that some operations depend on vehicle specification. It instructs the driver to carry out settings operations while stationary. Consult the OPENR system-settings page for that interface.
Mazda active driving display
Mazda’s warning concerns the active driving display: changing its settings while driving can distract attention from the road. The instruction reinforces the general rule to park before adjusting any display, even when the control is separate from the center infotainment screen. The relevant guidance appears in Mazda’s Active Driving Display manual.
Troubleshooting a screen that stays bright after dark
The display never changes from daytime mode
- Confirm that Automatic or Night mode is selected rather than Daylight or Day.
- Check whether the vehicle expects the headlamps to be on before it switches. Headlight status, not the clock, may be the trigger.
- Look for a separate screen-brightness value and a cluster-illumination link.
- Read the manual for your exact model year and infotainment version; menu labels can change between systems.
Automatic mode changes at an inconvenient time
- Use manual Night mode if the automatic trigger reacts poorly to tunnels, garages or unusual ambient lighting.
- Set the night brightness while parked so the manual value is ready before the next trip.
- If the behavior changed after a software update, consult the current owner’s documentation rather than assuming a hardware fault.
The screen is dim but still grabs attention
- Lower the nighttime level only until essential text remains readable; an unreadable map encourages repeated adjustments.
- Check for a Display off command that preserves audio, as documented for the 2024 Corolla.
- Do not cover the screen or install a film based solely on another vehicle’s fit. The manuals do not establish a universal accessory or product solution, and a cover could interfere with touch operation, cameras or cleaning.
Dimming the screen also dims the gauges too far
This usually indicates linked illumination or a shared dimmer. Search for independent center-screen and cluster controls. If your vehicle does not provide them, choose the compromise that keeps speed, warning indicators and other required information clearly visible.
What the manuals do—and do not—prove
The cited documents establish that certain vehicles provide Night, Automatic, separate brightness, linked illumination or screen-off controls. They do not establish a calibrated brightness target, a guaranteed reduction in nighttime distraction, or a quantified decrease in glare-related incidents. Your comfort can also change with glasses, windshield reflections, road lighting and fatigue. Use the settings to reduce an avoidable bright source, but never divert attention from driving to keep tuning the display.
Quick Recap
A practical decision guide
- Screen bright only after the headlamps come on: keep Automatic if the resulting Night level is comfortable; otherwise select manual Night and set its brightness while stopped.
- Screen bright despite Automatic: inspect the separate night value and cluster link, then follow the model manual’s menu path.
- Screen remains distracting at the lowest readable level: use Display off if your vehicle supports it and confirm what functions remain available.
- Controls are missing: do not assume a hidden universal command. Check the owner’s manual by make, model, model year, region and infotainment version.
