Short answer: when a car loses its cellular connection or its connected-service subscription, the functions most likely to stop are SOS/eCall and automatic crash notification, roadside-assistance calls, remote app commands, vehicle-location and stolen-vehicle services, live traffic and map data, online media, and some software or map updates. The exact list depends on the vehicle’s model, build date, market, modem, carrier and service plan.
There is no single, industry-wide 4G LTE shutdown list. The official vehicle notices currently available mostly describe 2G or 3G network retirements, or the closure of a particular automaker service. Those events should not be presented as proof that 4G LTE is generally being switched off. Treat “4G LTE discontinued” as a question about a specific car and service, then verify it by vehicle identification number (VIN).

First, identify what “4G LTE discontinued” means
Four different events are often confused:
- A carrier retires a radio generation. A regional 2G, 3G or future LTE retirement can remove the network on which a vehicle’s modem depends.
- An automaker closes its connected platform. Mercedes-Benz’s mbrace shutdown is an example of a service ending even though the cellular network itself was not necessarily retired.
- A vehicle’s modem is no longer supported. Older hardware may not be compatible with a replacement network or certification requirements.
- A subscription expires. The hardware and network can still operate, but paid connected features are disabled.
These causes produce similar symptoms but require different remedies. A modem replacement might help after a network retirement; it cannot restore a manufacturer platform that has been permanently closed. Conversely, renewing a subscription cannot fix an obsolete modem.

Features that may stop working
SOS, eCall and automatic crash notification
Emergency functions are among the most consequential losses. Renault Group says eCall in vehicles that rely on 2G or 3G will not function in areas where those networks have been switched off. Mercedes-Benz says affected former mbrace subscribers lost SOS or emergency calling and automatic collision notification. Toyota’s discontinued Safety Connect package included an SOS button and Automatic Collision Notification.
The physical button can remain installed after service termination, but its connection to a call center may no longer work. Do not infer capability from the button, dashboard icon or microphone alone; confirm the vehicle’s modem and service status.
Roadside and information calls
Mercedes-Benz’s historical 3G-sunset information lists roadside and information calls among the affected mbrace functions. Whether a particular roadside button is cellular-dependent varies by vehicle and equipment. A mechanical roadside feature, such as a warning light or an owner’s manual procedure, is not the same as a call-center service.

Remote app commands and vehicle location
Remote locking, unlocking, engine-start authorization where supported, climate preconditioning, charging control, vehicle location and stolen-vehicle assistance commonly require the automaker’s server and the car’s cellular modem. Toyota identifies Remote Climate and Vehicle Finder as unavailable on certain vehicles after its 3G service discontinuation. Mercedes-Benz’s connected-service notices likewise describe remote and location functions ending for affected vehicles.
Commands already sent before a shutdown are not a reliable fallback. If the vehicle cannot authenticate with the service, a queued request may never arrive or may report an error in the app.
Live traffic, online maps and other data services
Live traffic, cloud-based map searches, charging-station information, weather or points-of-interest data can disappear while the basic map display remains. Tesla says certain older Model S vehicles affected by a 3G shutdown lost live traffic, maps, charging information, streaming, map updates and over-the-air updates unless they used an available alternative.

Mercedes-Benz provides an important distinction: its mbrace shutdown did not affect ordinary built-in navigation, Bluetooth or SiriusXM because those features were not supported by mbrace. Toyota likewise says built-in navigation continues after the cited Safety Connect and Entune App Suite sunset. An offline map and a live-data subscription therefore have to be assessed separately.
Online media and cloud accounts
Streaming and other cloud-connected entertainment can stop when the vehicle can no longer reach the automaker or content service. A phone paired over Bluetooth may continue to provide audio because that is a local connection rather than the car’s embedded cellular link. Satellite services such as SiriusXM can also follow separate hardware and subscription paths, as Mercedes-Benz’s mbrace FAQ illustrates.
Software and map updates
Over-the-air firmware or map delivery may fail when the embedded modem is offline. Tesla specifically includes over-the-air updates among services affected on certain pre-LTE Model S vehicles. A dealer-installed update, a Wi-Fi download or a removable-media procedure may still be available, but the manufacturer must confirm the supported method for that model.

What usually keeps working
A network retirement does not normally disable the mechanical systems that make the car drivable. Renault Group explicitly says vehicles remain permitted to operate after 2G and 3G shutdowns. Engine control, braking, steering, lights, windows, climate hardware and other local functions do not depend on the connected-service server merely because the car has a cellular modem.
However, “offline” does not mean every feature is guaranteed. Navigation stored in the head unit may continue while live traffic disappears; Bluetooth may work while a cloud music app fails; and a phone’s hotspot may restore some data without restoring proprietary emergency or remote-control functions. Read the vehicle’s owner and service documentation for the exact equipment.

| Variable | Why it changes the answer |
|---|---|
| Country and carrier | Network retirement dates and replacement coverage differ by market. |
| Build date and trim | A single model year can contain more than one telematics module. |
| Modem generation | A 4G-capable module may avoid a 3G shutdown; an older module may not. |
| Automaker platform | Connected services can end independently of the carrier network. |
| Subscription status | An expired plan can look like a network failure. |
| Retrofit history | An installed modem or infotainment upgrade can change eligibility. |
| Local coverage | A temporary dead zone is different from a permanent sunset. |
Mercedes-Benz’s US 3G FAQ, for example, identifies different affected model-year groups and says 2017 vehicles equipped with a 4G LTE module were not affected by that particular 3G shutdown. Tesla identifies certain Model S cars built before June 2015 that lacked an LTE-capable modem and had not received the specified Infotainment Upgrade. These examples show why a VIN-level check is more reliable than a broad model-year search.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the official examples show
| Vehicle or service | Market and timing | Documented outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Renault Group connected vehicles | Europe; 2G/3G deactivation underway since 2024, expected to finish by 2029 depending on country | eCall and other services relying on those networks will not work where the networks have been interrupted. Renault says easy link and openR link services use 4G and are not impacted by that 2G/3G shutdown. |
| Mercedes-Benz mbrace | United States; ended December 31, 2025 and terminated January 1, 2026 | Affected former subscribers lost connected features including SOS or emergency service. Model-year 2017 and 2018 vehicles were identified as potentially affected, with stated exceptions for certain 2018 GLE and C-Class vehicles equipped with Digital Extras technology. |
| Mercedes-Benz 3G sunset | United States; staged dates in 2022 | Specified mbrace-connected functions ceased for listed model-year groups. Navigation, Bluetooth and SiriusXM were outside mbrace and were not impacted. The list is historical and US-specific. |
| Tesla Model S | Vehicles built before June 2015 without an LTE-capable modem or the Infotainment Upgrade | Tesla describes an LTE modem upgrade and Wi-Fi access for selected services. Some live, driving-dependent information remains limited over Wi-Fi. |
| Toyota Safety Connect and Entune App Suite | Select 2010–2018 model-year vehicles in the United States; discontinued November 1, 2022 | 3G-dependent services ended. Toyota says no retrofit option was available for those services, while built-in navigation continues. |
| NissanConnect App cases | United Kingdom; affected services vary by vehicle and network | Some timer functions remain available through the infotainment system even as remote and map-related services end. |
How to check your own car
- Record the identifiers. Write down the make, model, model year, build date if shown, country of registration, trim, infotainment system and the name of the connected service.
- Check the automaker’s current support page. Search for the exact service name plus “network sunset,” “modem,” or “connected services.” Prefer a notice covering your country.
- Request a VIN check. Ask the automaker, dealer or service provider to identify the installed telematics module, its radio generation and the exact functions tied to it.
- Separate the failure type. Ask whether the problem is a carrier retirement, an automaker service termination, an expired subscription or a local coverage problem.
- List each dependent feature. Have the provider state separately whether SOS, automatic collision notification, roadside calling, remote commands, location, live traffic, media and updates remain supported.
- Ask about supported alternatives. Confirm whether a manufacturer-approved modem or infotainment upgrade exists, whether Wi-Fi is supported, and which functions still require cellular coverage.
- Test safely. Do not press an SOS button merely to experiment. Use the automaker’s diagnostic procedure or customer support to verify service status.
Upgrade and workaround options
Manufacturer modem or infotainment upgrade
A supported retrofit is the most complete remedy when one exists because it can preserve the automaker’s authentication and feature set. Tesla describes an LTE modem upgrade for eligible older Model S vehicles. Eligibility depends on build date, existing hardware and the manufacturer’s current program; it is not a generic solution for other makes.
Wi-Fi or a paired phone
Wi-Fi can restore selected online functions on some cars, including certain browsing or account features. It does not automatically restore cellular eCall, automatic crash notification, remote commands that require the embedded modem, or driving-dependent data. Tesla notes that some live information remains limited over Wi-Fi even when Wi-Fi access is available.
Aftermarket OBD2 trackers
An aftermarket 4G LTE OBD2 tracker may provide location and trip data through its own service plan. Check its network bands, coverage in every country where the car travels, monthly fees, power behavior, vehicle compatibility and data handling. An OBD tracker is not equivalent to factory SOS, automatic collision notification, roadside call-center access or proprietary remote controls, and it should never be described as restoring those functions without explicit evidence.
No-retrofit situations
Toyota says there was no retrofit option for the cited Safety Connect and Entune App Suite discontinuation. In such cases, the practical choices are to use the remaining offline equipment, obtain safety assistance through a phone or separate service, and keep emergency contact information accessible in the vehicle.
Symptoms after a shutdown and what they mean
| Symptom | Likely category | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| App shows the car as offline | Network retirement, service closure, subscription lapse or coverage gap | Request a VIN and account-status check; compare with another location. |
| SOS indicator changes state or a test call fails | Telematics or emergency-service dependency | Contact the automaker through a safe channel; do not rely on the button until confirmed. |
| Remote climate or lock commands fail, but the car drives normally | Connected-service loss rather than a powertrain fault | Verify subscription, modem generation and platform sunset notice. |
| Map appears but traffic or charging data is absent | Live-data connection unavailable | Check whether the map is stored locally and whether Wi-Fi or phone data is supported. |
| Bluetooth audio still works while streaming apps fail | Local link remains; cloud service is unavailable | Use Bluetooth or another supported local source. |
| Updates fail over the air | Embedded data path unavailable | Ask about dealer, Wi-Fi or removable-media update procedures. |
A practical decision rule
Use the following order when deciding what to do:
- If only the subscription ended, renew it if the service is still offered and the feature is important.
- If the automaker platform ended, look for an official successor or a stated exception; a new subscription to the old platform will not help.
- If the carrier retired the modem’s network, ask for a supported hardware upgrade and its eligibility requirements.
- If no upgrade exists, preserve offline functions, use a phone or separate assistance arrangement for emergency contact, and treat aftermarket tracking as a limited location alternative.
- If the issue is local coverage, retest in a different location before concluding that the vehicle has permanently lost service.
The most dependable answer to “Which features stop working?” is therefore a feature-by-feature statement for one vehicle, in one market, on one date. Broad claims that every connected function fails—or that every car stops working—are inaccurate.
