Several brands scored better than Subaru in J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, but the available official results do not verify the five brands immediately ahead of Subaru. The study puts Subaru at 212 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), compared with a 202 PP100 industry average. Consumer Reports’ separate 2025 new-car reliability ranking, meanwhile, placed Subaru second. So the answer depends on which measure you mean—not a universal list of five brands.
Why there isn’t a verified list of five brands ahead of Subaru
J.D. Power’s official 2025 study release identifies the overall leader and the top three mass-market brands, and reports Subaru’s score. It does not establish the complete ordered list of brands immediately above Subaru. Naming five brands as the next-best performers would therefore go beyond the available ranking evidence.
The verified leaders offer useful examples of brands that scored better than Subaru in that study:

What J.D. Power’s dependability score measures
The 2025 study surveyed 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. It counts reported problems per 100 vehicles, or PP100; lower is better. Subaru’s 212 PP100 was 10 points higher than the 202 PP100 industry average, indicating more reported problems than the average in this study population.
PP100 is a survey-based brand-level measure, not a prediction that a particular vehicle will have a set number of problems. It also does not mean every Subaru is less dependable than every vehicle from a brand with a lower score.

Why another reliability ranking puts Subaru near the top
Consumer Reports’ report published December 4, 2025, ranked Toyota first and Subaru second for predicted new-car reliability. That ranking uses member surveys covering about 380,000 vehicles and considers 20 trouble areas, weighting problems for severity and owner impact. Its data span model years 2000–2025, with a few early 2026 models.
That result does not conflict directly with J.D. Power’s Subaru score. Consumer Reports estimates predicted reliability for new cars; J.D. Power measures problems reported by original owners of three-year-old vehicles. Their populations, time horizons, and methods differ, and their scores should not be combined or treated as interchangeable.

Powertrain can change the dependability picture
J.D. Power’s 2025 study reported different average problem rates by powertrain. These are study-wide averages, not scores for a specific brand or model:

In this study, hybrids had fewer reported problems on average than plug-in hybrids. A brand-level ranking alone cannot tell you whether a particular model or powertrain is a good fit.

How to use the rankings when choosing a car
- Decide what you mean by reliability. For predicted new-car reliability, Consumer Reports’ 2025 ranking placed Subaru second. For problems reported after three years, J.D. Power’s 2025 study placed Subaru above its industry-average PP100 score.
- Compare the exact model and powertrain. Brand averages do not establish how a specific model, model year, or engine will perform.
- Keep the study population in view. J.D. Power’s result concerns original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles surveyed after three years, not every used Subaru or every newer vehicle.
- Use verified rankings rather than filling gaps. The published J.D. Power results establish several brands with lower PP100 scores than Subaru, but not the five brands immediately ahead of it in rank order.
